AMA Pro Barber Daytona SportBike Sunday race results

Martin Cardenas took the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike championship with a superb ride at Barber Motorsports ParkLEEDS, AL, SEPT 26 – M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas won the Daytona SportBike Championship in a tumultuous nine-lap shootout after the original race was red-flagged and shortened.

It was a sweet reward for the Colombian, who fought for last year’s title, only to be derailed when he broke his hand in the penultimate round at Virginia International Raceway.

Cardenas was inconsistent for the first half of this season, either winning or crashing in the first seven races. It wasn’t until the second round at Road America, which he won, that he broke that cycle. From that point on, he had the occasional off day, but finished no worse than fifth. He also won a class leading nine out of 18 races.

Cardenas was in position to win the championship when the race was stopped on the 14th of 21 laps. Both Project 1 Atlanta bikes crashed, Clinton Seller first, while he was in second, then Dane Westby out of the lead. At the time Cardenas was third and certain to win the championship. Title rivals Danny Eslick and Josh Herrin, both of whom were trailing Cardenas in points, were also trailing him on the track. Eslick was fifth, eight seconds behind, and Herrin another two seconds back in sixth.
