Windows 8
What's your experience with it? PC, tablet, or smartphone? Your overall thoughts, pros and cons. Worth the upgrade from Windows 7? It's only $40 right now for a limited time. I like what I'm hearing initially about Windows 8 having a smaller footprint.

Haven't tried it but I don't want to learn an all new system. I didn't like their little app windows and whatnot

I only tried it at on a phone in a kiosk. I think it's worth the upgrade from 7 IF you want to try a different UI.

I'm wondering how intuitive and productive it can be on a PC without touch screen. Plus they killed the start menu!
RIP Windows start menu (Windows 95 - Windows 7). You were always there when I clicked you |

I got it on my desktop since I get a free copy from my university. So far all I can say is that it's alright. Boot up is way faster. Data transfer is so much better, gives an instantaneous transfer rate and it's stay well organized when you have more than one going on. The metro UI is looks nice but I hardly use it due to the huge lack of apps and also the frustration I get from downloading a file using a UI internet browser (You can only open it in the desktop mode!). I find myself using the desktop mode 90% of the time. Switching task is a lot smoother. You move your mouse to the right and all any task you recently had open will be there, right where you left off.
Overall it's alright. Not a huge upgrade from 7, but It has potential. As it stands I wouldn't pay full price for it if I already have 7. |

Version 1 purchasers = beta testers. This has always been and always will be true.
The best time to move to an OS is shortly before they stop supporting your current version. Let the early-adopter suckers sort out the issues for you. |

I couldn't get off Vista fast enough; it was a complete turd. But Win7 has been fantastic on all of my machines for quite awhile now. Easy to maintain, easy to update, zero issues with malware, and it boots very quickly. I'm in no rush to jump to Win8 anytime soon, as I'm unclear on what if any benefits it really gets me if I don't have a touchscreen interface anyway.
