Help fight leukemia and lymphoma

One of my daughters is trying to get donations to help fund the cure for leukemia and lymphoma. Alex was nice enough to allow me to post this.
So far she has raised $3400 and needs $4400 in order to secure her entry into an international triathlon in Florida this May.

Thank you all for your help!

Sam

Sam - more than happy to support the cause. Great looking grand children.

In my other 2-wheel life I'm the cycling coach for the local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team In Training program.

Don, Thank you very much. What I failed to mention is when Becky was 14 (20 years ago), she entered her first triathlon (Reston Triathlon--international distance) and beat me!! She was the youngest female to ever enter and the 2nd female out of the water (1 mile swim), behind an All American College swimmer! The older girl beat her out by 200 yards. Becky still holds the swim record for 14-22 yr old females. Roll forward 20 years. This past summer she did the same race again and was awarded a random prize "Most in need of an upgraded bicycle" because she was riding the Bike Nashbar bike that I bought 20 years ago. The random prize was a custom fitted aluminum racer ($1600).

Two or three years ago, she ran in the first Walt Disney World "Goofy" challenge --- Marathon on Saturday and a Half Marathon on Sunday...36.3 miles total!

Again...thank you very much!!!

Don and Kelly,

Becky called her Mom last night, all excited and said a couple of people made donations from Nebraska and Hawaii! My wife just looked at me and smiled!

Thanks again!

You go girl! Thanks a lot.

Another girl that's training with Becky had the same collection amount a couple of weeks ago. They saw each other during training over this past weekend and the other girl said donations suddenly rolled in and she had made her goal. She told Becky that she wished she could transfer funds to Becky's account! They are making lots of new friends, just as Dad is on this forum.

Sam, That Cervelo is quite a machine--very very fast. I would like to help out, but can`t at this time. I am in the middle of Income Tax, training for The Trek Across Maine--a 186mi charity ride for which I am trying to raise $1000 by May 26. I am raising the money by working on bikes. Hope your daughter does well. She certainly has a serious bike. I would love to do Tris, but can`t do the running part due to a hip replacement. I can ride, though, and can do 100mi+ in one day.

Sam, I developed a vision problem. Went from 20-20 correctible to 20-30 non-correctible in two months. I could not wait for the VA to address the problem, so I went to an eye specialist at my own expense (being 100% Service-connected, the Va is supposed to take care of this problem) The VA gave me an appointment in late June to evaluate the problem--obviously, they can`t talk to the doctor who examined me and found the problem. According to the doctor, I will have no vision in my left eye by July. I will have the local doctor do the necessary surgery (replacing the lens). Since I only have Medicare, I`ll have to be responsible for 20% of the cost. The VA will not reimburse. This Thursday, I plan to have a chat with the folks from the VA. Our Congressman is the chair of the committee in charge of VA funding. He is also a friend. We will see if his chat with the good folks at the VA will yield some fruit. I just feel it is so wrong when those of us who risked everything and were hurt, have to beg for something that should have been fast tracked. If I had private health insurance, that surgery would have been done a month ago. What I have is a fast growing cataract on the posterior of the eye which blocks the centre of the lens. Most cataracts are anterior ones that grow very slowly.

Gary,

Thank you very much! I know Becky will really appreciate your donation. We have been watching her children (our grandchildren) all weekend, so needless to say, I didn't get to ride my bike. I did get to see Becky's oldest daughter ride her bike for the first time. The training wheels came off last week and she rode it yesterday. Took some nasty spills and got tired of grandpa telling her that was a low side crash and that was a high side. Thank goodness, most of them were low sides. Today she did even better. I had her doing figure eights, while her mommy was out training (biking and running).

Thanks again.

This will be my last update until after the race next month. All the participants were given 2 additional days (until midnight 4/22) to hopefully meet their donation goals. Currently, Becky is $150 short of her goal, but without those of you from ninjette.org, she would have been even farther from her goal.

Thanks to all those Great FAST Beautiful Ferrari Bright colored bike owners on the forum. You guys/girls are the greatest!

My aunt just passed away from cancer. Pancreatic, but cancer none the less. I respect Becky for stressing to the max just for other people. She is a wonderful lady and there are no words to describe how great it is that she is trying to help people who she doesn't even know. Thank you for raising a wonderful girl.

Race day - results!!

Well all this preparation finally paid off! At 6:30 am on May 9, 2009, the swimmers dove into the Gulf of Mexico, off the Florida panhandle, in the first leg of the Gulf Coast Triathlon. Yep, thanks to many of you, my little girl, Becky was in the thick of it. 1.2 miles later, she hopped on her bicycle to begin the second leg of the race. 56 miles later, she changed into her running shoes and with wobbly legs, started the third and last leg of the race, a 13.1 mile run.

At 12:37 pm, Becky crossed the finish line with a time of 6:07:28 (6 hrs and 7 mins and 28 secs) and completed her first half-ironman triathlon.

Thanks to all you, who made this possible!
