max pregen tire size for dual sport
hello, i have a burning question here im hoping someone here will be able to answer. it is not a typical tire size question.
what are the widest tires that i can run on the 88-07 ninja wheels? I will be putting them onto a 99 atk 605 dual sport. There is plenty of room everywhere, so no worries about rubbing. I just need to know how big i can go on the tires. I am thinking 120 on the front and 140 on the rear. Am I way off? Thanks |

Check out http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/About_wider_tires
I'm running a 130/90 street tire on the rear, and it's pretty close to the chain and swingarm. I actually think it's too big. No need for such a large tire with only 23HP, and it's heavy and raises the rear of the bike noticeably. |

thanks for the response, but im actually putting the wheels on a dirt bike that has plenty of room, so i dont have to worry about any scraping or rubbing.
I am asking about the widest/ biggest possible tires that will fit on the rims. The rims are NOT going on a ninja Thanks |

Well, anything 16" will fit, even something from a Toyota, but the larger you go, the less stable the tire is on the bike. That's why the wiki link is helpful.

i appreciate your responses. i have read through all the wiki info here and at ninja250 regarding tire sizing.
many problems with the ninjas seem to be focused on fender rubbing or swing arm/ chain rubbing. The other issue is tire pinching from running too wide of a tire. I understand that the stock ninja was 100 on the front and 130 on the rear. I want to know what the widest and biggest tires will fit on the rims. I dont have to worry about rubbing or scraping, because the rims are going on a bigger bike. So, will a 120 tire fit on the front? Will a 140 fit on the rear? If those dont work, what will? |

What tires arse you looking at specifically? Usually the manufacturer will list the min and max rim width for their tires.

I would suggest getting some 17s for much better tire selection. I think I saw some newgen wheels for 150 a pair.

I remember a few people putting dual sport tires on their pre-gen ninjas a few years back. I don't know if they still make whatever tire they were using though.
A quick search shows very few options for 16" dual sport tires. I don't know if their is anything that would fit the front. I agree with quarterliter that you might just want to find some 17's. Plenty of options available in that size. I'm currently running shinko 244's on my berg.

17s would be ideal but i already have the 16s. I got em real cheap. My rationalization is that this is my practice run for adapting a high dollar set of marchesini 17s.
The problem is that there are no direct fit wheels for my ATK, so whatever I get, i will have to adapt to my bike. I can make the 16s fit for really cheap. Shinko makes some decent cheap street 16s. Im hoping the ninja wheels will accept a 120 tire on the front and a 140 tire on the rear. I found some anecdotal evidence of people fitting 120 tires on 2.15 width rims and 140 tires on 2.5 width rims. I was hoping somebody could back that up here. Ill be running street tires on the ninja wheels. So has anybody put big tires on the ninja pregen wheels? There are tons of threads with people asking, but they get shot down quick because the ninja is too small. Im putting the ninja wheels on a big bike. Guess im just gonna have to try then report back |

Oh my bad, didn't see that you want to run street tires.
In that case then why not give it a try I guess. Not many people went with bigger than stock tires on the pre-gen 250. Actually the original size was a 120 on the rear and Kawi switched it to a 130 later on. So a 140 would be two sizes bigger than original. A 120 front 140 rear combo would probably work, can't say for sure though. You can fit those widths on the new-gen 17" wheels. I had a 150 on the rear of my klx 250. Pretty sure those wheels are a little wider though.

Not sure what tires you are looking at.
The only tire they make that is a 140 width for a 16" rim is the 230 tourmaster. You'll have better options going with a 130. They do make the 712 in a 120/80-16 for the front. It's still a cruiser tire but is more sporty. I had one on the rear of my pre-gen 250.

120 front and 140 rear does work. Make sure you have stock chain length and you shouldnt have an issue.

I was thinking of putting the 250 16" wheels on my yz250. Curious to know how it works out for you.
