07 ninja 250 ignition switch question.
does anyone know if the ignition switch from a Ninja 500 will fit a 2007 Ninja 250 they look identical but I can't find anything online that confirms that it will cross over. Even if the electrical connector is different I don't mind spicing the wires. I can't seem to find a ignition switch for the 07 250 specifically for under $140 however I can find the Ninja 500 ignition switch for $40. Any insight would be appreciated thanks.

Cross reference part numbers between the two machines. I may have a complete ignition switch, with key from one of my tear down machines. I won't know until tomorrow though. |

Yeah it looks like Kawi gave every bike that they made a different part number for the ignition but it's also known that the same switch was used in a lot of d
ifferent bikes. So the part numbers didn't seem to be much help. |

I doubt they would swap, but look closely at a photo of the plugs. I wouldn't expect them to be the same - but you never know.
The correct used one may be a safer bet. Most non-OEM ignitions usually lack a required resistor, and seldom work as delivered. |

More difficult in compatibility is spacing of mounting holes. If those don't match, you can't attach it under triple anyway.
Electronically, they function same. So even if plug doesn't fit, you can remove terminals from old connector and transfer to new ig-switch with terminals in correct locations to work. So electronics is easy, more difficult is physical mounting. |

Found a cross-reference model fitment list on one of the eBay vendors selling this model switch tonight. It aims to fit the pregens up to 1994. Does not list the 95-07 models numbers. I wander what could be different other than the connector?
According to that vendor it should be the same exact switch. Here is the info from their posting. Based on this I'm gonna roll the dice and order one for $35.00 and see what happens will keep you all updated. |

Found it.
I had all the photos taken, and uploading.....when my phone died. So now have to take all over agiain on my tablet. The only issue I have with it, is one key. But it does have a key. This unit was actually taken care of a few years back. I was going to ditch the ignition, so i could powdercoat the triple tree, for my girlfriends bike. Been sitting all lubed up, in a box, unused. No issues with key/ignition entry cover damage. Smootly yet firmly transitions to each detent with a heavy click. Lock extends/retracts, again, smoothly, with a nice tactile feedback. Actually about to test it on my girlfriends bike......ooooh she mad. Lol anyways here are pics. |

At first your find on the emgo key set looked good. But it only covers ninja 250 from
1988 to 1990. Then from1992 to 1994 . EDIT never mind, i missed your post stating that. |

New Emgo unit arrived via Amazon this morning, at first glance there is only one notable difference. The end that the locking bar for the steering lock extends from is flat instead of being slightly concave as it is on the original unit. So far after only holding it in place by hand with the bars in the locked position the Emgo seems to fit fine. Didn't notice any problems operating the lock.
Will up date again once installed. |

Ok so, Emgo switch arrived and installs exactly as the original one did. Plugs right in with the stock connectors. Key Switch turns the dash on, lights come one, starter works and will turn engine over, however I am barely getting voltage at the spark plug wires when I try to start it. Volt meter goes from zero at rest to1.3- 1.5 volts when cranking. Obviously this is not enough to get her to run.
Not sure if this means the switch works and I have another problem or if the switch could somehow be causing this. Have an original 07 EX250 switch arriving today via eBay so the next test will be to switch the Ignitions and see what happens. If that doesn't work what should I check next? |

As tested at the battery? I'd have to check it, I put a brand new battery in, but used jumpper cables hooked up to my truck when trying to start it so that I wouldn't run the new battery down

Yes, tested at battery itself. Can use test-leads with alligator clips to connect meter to leave hands free for pushing start button

Voltage at battery is 12.3 at rest and Apx. 10.2 - 10.5 when cranking the starter without help from the truck jumper cables.

Ok installed the correct OEM Ignition switch and the bike started right up! Yey!!! So now we have our answer. The Emgo switch was the issue. Now to figure out a new issue. It idles at about 3000 rpm. My guess is that it's a vacume leak somewhere. I noticed a strange clear hose coming off of the carb base that is not connected to anything. Any idea where this is supposed to go?

Ok, found out that the clear hose is OEM and is an overflow for the carbs, I was suspect of it because it was clear and putting my finger over the end of it would cause the engine to stall even from 3k rpm.
I also remembered that it had no foam airfilter in the airbox since it disintegrated and a had cleaned it out. So I cut a regular yellow home depot clean up sponge in half with a bread knife and it fit perfect. At least perfect enough until the new oem foam one comes.in. Surprisingly adding the foam makeshift airfilter added a couple hundred rpm instead of decreasing it. Which makes more sense now that I think about it since the air/fuel ratio is probably more accurate. So lastly I adjusted the idle speed knob. Yep that pretty much took care of it lol. Idles perfectly now. One issue it has is a little lag time coming down from 2500rpm.to 1500 rpm but revs perfect in the rest of the range. I can live with that but does anyone have a clue how to tune that out? |

Choke was off when it was idling at 3k rpm. Ran at 5k rpm with the choke on originally. My guess is the original owner may have been gradually turning the idle speed up a little over time as the carbs got dirty. Now that the carbs are good and clean it was high?
