Were you using the front brake as well, or just the rear brake?

Thought only the front was abs

so the rear brake would not really add much braking force.

The Nissin ABS functions on both front & rear brakes. But stomping on the rear brake will still not cause the bike to stop that quickly, even as the ABS prevents lockup. The brake pads on the 300 aren't very aggressive, and require a firm squeeze on the lever and/or pedal for a strong amount of braking force. The feel can be adjusted by using more aggressive pads.
