Atomic's Ninjette
Hi Guys,
wanted to create a sort of build thread to track my own progress on my mods and such. maybe get ideas. Maybe even entertain you guys with some teenage engineering. Right now the bike sits as I bought it except the fairings are off for maintainence, so here are the pics of my very first bike how I bought it. Bike was downed before I bought it but everything was fixed up except the rear seat and rear spools. Soon I will be cutting the rear fender like Alex did and be putting in HID's and halo eyes. http://www.uniquemotolights.com/inde...&product_id=55 I would like to change the color of my bike as my fairings dont match the tank and it bothers me and everyone has this color green so want something more unique. If i Did the work myself what kind of cost are we looking at? I know its a lot of work, ive painted many car parts and a complete engine from a 1953 studebaker im restoring. Would like to probably paint it alpine white and get my rims power coated gold. Subaru style. Open to suggestions. |

Looks good man! Wish I was in a position to drop the coin on that projector/halo headlight. Those kits look sick on our bikes!
As far as the paint goes. I had to repaint my tank when I went down. Just the paint, basemaker, and clear coat was just under $130. So for the entire bike you would probably be looking at around $300. That white/gold combo will look awesome. |

Im repainting my bike as well. Im not doing any crazy color, just black, buuut florescent green accents. (Im powder Coating stuff that green, so rims and anything else metal I can)
Cost really depends on the paint. Thats where it will get pricey. again another reason I just went with a single stage black. And you know Ill see if I like it and if I think it needs some clear. Honestly everything you need would probably cost $50 plus paint depending on what you have available to you already. what color are you thinking?

I am leaning towards Alpine white. I have been wanting to learn how to powder coat so I would then powder coat levers and everything else I could fit in my home made plating kit gold. Would have the rims powder coated gold more than likely proffesionally done as that would require a lare set up. First I'm doing my HID/halo kit and cant decide if I want the blue or white ring for the halos. If I stay green I would pick white but if I do end up white I would want blue. I guess I could get blue to motivate me to get it painted.

I was thinking about that kit as well but if I was going to do Halos i wanted green Halos and they dont offer that
not sure about do it your self powder coating? Let me know how it works out. You can always send it out to get done as well. Id do it all for you but not sure about how much shipping would be. I work here. So I actually use our powder coating booth wagner gun and our oven.

Well if you can hook me up I will skip the mess that would have been me trying to learn how to powder coat haha.
Never painted plastic, whats the process? I Will probly just pick a piece and do one at a time. Actually maybe not then everything would not be matched quite so well haha. |

painting plastic just just like painting metal... kind of. The thing is you can gouge plastic a lot easier. I will give you the grit I am using that my grandpa told me to use. He has easily logged about 60+ years in body work so he knows his ****. once you get all the decals off, if you want to just paint over the plastic and you dont have any scratches, sand it with 400 grit until the paint is dull. make sure it is all washed off and paint away. But remember if you have scratches on it do not just paint it. Depending if the scratches are deep you may get away with shooting it with a coat of primer then sanding it down.If that doesnt work you may have to use bondo, then primer it... Or Primer it, then use spot putty if the scratch isnt that bad. I would honestly primer it even if you cant see scratches, just to be safe.

Justin,
Thanks for the tips. My side fairings at least are pretty clean. almost brand new but i will still primer everything. I rattle canned my motor and actually got a pretty professional look out of it. I am no expert though. Could I get a decent paint job with a rattle can on this or should i try and get a hold of a spray gun? After I get her painted I will get in touch about some powder coating. Wouldnt be anything big probably just levers, maybe a few other small items. I recall seeing a green halo kit for our ninjas, I will see if I can find it again Thanks again for the tips |

I wish you were closer and I could help you more with it. But a rattle can job will not look as good as using an actual spray gun. also if you primer it DO NOT USE RATTLE CAN PRIMER. What you want is called lacquer primer. You have to use a spray gun for that as well. My Gpa explained to me why you dont want to use rattle can primer, apparently the aresol messes up the paint... so just keep that in mind as well.

+1 for joining the gold wheel club.
I wouldn't recommend getting blue angel eyes unless you can turn them off while you're riding. Any blue lighting on the front of your bike is gonna get you pulled over. |

At least you made it to work. Last time I ran out, I was in town and had to push it to a gas station. That was embarrassing
