Valve issue
I got to my bike yesterday would not start even tho it was getting gas air and spark... so i pull apart my valve cover.... Sure enough one of the pistons intake valves were way to small a gap (ie could not get any feeler gauge in it... after attempting adjusting i can not get either one to get a gap that is correct... (.005 inch) I couldn't even get it to 0.3... any ideas?
I attempted searching couldn't find anything related... |

Basically after letting the adjustment screw all the way out (seemingly)(it does stop at a certain point right?) it would not it get loose enough for it to get in spec with a big enough gap.

Sorry, I've never done a valve adjustment on a pregen, but have done many on other cars and bikes... is the adjuster threaded so it should be able to back out completely or is there some sort of stop that prevents it from being adjusted fully "out" other than the lock nut?

leave your feeler gauge in, as you run your screw down and tighten the jam nut up, do it enough that the gauges pop out with effort(can't let that set screw turn). Now carefully hold your set screw and apply proper tourqe

The only adjuster afaik is the adjustment screw.... which basically from what ive seen on diagrams is a upside down bolt with a screw head on the tail side....

mmm... okay. sounds like you might need to replace the adjuster?
curious as to why this is happening though. 2 ways that I can think of... the adjuster is worn where it contacts the cam lobe or the valve has been pounded into the seat area of the cylinder and is sticking up farther than it is supposed to. have you tried backing out another adjuster to see how much adjustment leeway/gap you can get with a "good" adjuster? |

I have not swithed the adjusters. There are two intakes on the same piston that do the same thing... almost at the same distance... the other two are still perfectly set from the last adjustment...

sorry if I wasn't clear (I seldom am... ask my wife )
I was asking, on the other adjusters, if you back them out as far as you can, what's the max clearance with them? |

Were it the exhaust valves one could surmise that the valves/valve seats were burnt, so allowing the valve stems to rise up and consume all available adjustment space; I would have thought it unlikely that the intake valves would go first. At 9,000 miles any of the above seems very unlikely unless you run wot and way lean or someone did a previous adjustment and left far too small a gap.
