Most Ridiculous Gear
Ever come across low-quality gear that just plain sucks? Here is the place to vent. Have you ever seen a piece of gear so ridiculous, you wonder who would buy it? Post it here, and laugh with us at the manufacturers.
My first entry, in the dumb idea category: Shifter Skins - $20. You slip them over your TENNIS SHOES to protect your TENNIS SHOES from scuff marks from the shifter. Umm, hey squid, if your TENNIS SHOES can't handle the shifter, they probably aren't going to hold up well against 50mph gravel. Vega makes some decent quality boots for around $70 bucks. So, for the cost of $50 tennis shoes and $20 shifter skins, you could just buy purpose built riding shoes with actual protective properties. Or you could just get some Akito Monza leather riding boots for $40 that look and feel great and, while not super protective, are a damn site better than ridiculous shifter skins. Last futzed with by gfloyd2002; December 24th, 2010 at 12:47 PM. Reason: Spelled Akito Monza wrong. :( |

Almost a cliche for pointless "gear", this helmet's horns.

Hey, you could put someone's eye out with those! The horns, I mean. Total safety hazard. Also, other than the chest protectors, she's got no road rash protection.

Because you don't use the ends of your fingers for anything. Why did we evolve opposable thumbs anyway? No need to protect them either, right?

At least it's a ZX-10R, even if it does have that goofy stretched swingarm.

Wow to those tennis shoe covers. My waterproof leather workboots were $30 on sale. Not only do they look clean enough that if Im feeling lazy I can wear them to work in place of dress shoes, but I went down at 30mph and they barely have a scuff (and didnt come off).
Sweet gloves, too, haha. On the flip side, I paid 25 for my armored leather/mesh gloves from walmart, and while I was sliding on the edge of my palm I just knew my hand was gonna be a bloody mess, but you actually cant even tell where I slid. Funny enough, I was actually on my way to get some new gloves, but im not so concerned now. Just a hidden gem from walmart, I guess :P . Posted via Mobile Device |

Product features on this high fashion motorcycle jacket from Armadillo gear? MP3 Pocket + headphone loops and a cuff mitten with thumb loop. A cuff mitten? The fabric is "protective" 320 denier material, with lots of bits ready to catch on things when you crash. Better than nothing, sure, but does the picture below show someone actually protected?
Rant: Scooter culture annoys me. Form over function, never wear proper gear, drive like idiots, grrrrr.

Heh, in that case it's not the gear that is ridiculous, but the add itself :P .
I actually sewed straps onto the sides of my jacket under the torso, but it is so my girlfriend can hang on more comfortably :P . I think I might die if I see two fully geared-up dudes on a bike like that. But, I might give them the benefit of the doubt and guess they were on a hardcore ride and one of their bikes broke down and they needed to go get parts or something :P . At least, that's what I'd hope...

+1 to the Butty Buddy video. I'm afraid to ask where you found that. Great quotes from the vid: "There is no substitute for a wide, correctly shaped seating area." Wasn't that a song by Sir Mix a Lot in the 90s?

I think something something along the lines of clothing or otherwise personal decoration was the original focus . Otherwise we'll get into all sorts of dumb stuff, like why would anyone put all this effort trying to add power to their 250s when there are many much more powerful bikes available for not much more money (I kid, I kid :P ).

Skull or demented clown masks.
Lots of crappy gear in this ad. I actually saw a guy wearing one of these masks with a bright red clown wig - how ironic.

Wow, there's a lot of ridiculous stuff that I never even knew existed. That said, I still think these are awesomely absurd:
They look even more ridiculous in person. I saw someone with the tiger ears riding in front of me on the freeway once, and it made me laugh. More significantly though, this nutjob right here also got a pair: (I was spending Halloween at the track, so it couldn't be helped. D-don't judge me. Haha, they stayed on fine most of the day, but I ended up losing one during the very last session. Hit the guy pitted across from me too ) I personally have no qualms with the farkles that aren't compromising safety no matter how ridiculous I may think they look. It's all in good fun |
