Shift Light / Gear Indicator - Custom by ninja250
I believe the first five run is as follows:
1) Paul 2) Bob 3)Kevin Honey Badger 4)Adrian 5)Wellcraft Paul is already payed up from some parts he sent me a while ago Adrian I will take care of locally. I'm gonna need to ask for $60 each from Kevin, Bob and Wellcraft to cover the parts of the gauges. Believe me that is zero profit for me to start. If any of you guys wants to pass the first 5 release, let me know and I'll get someone else in on it. You can take the next release no problem. The second round I will have to take pre-orders if all goes good with the first round. If I didn't get you this time it's either because somebody else was interested longer or was more active int he thread for longer period of time or was more outspokenly interested. Do not worry, I will get the rest of you in the next run of gauges! I promise. I will do my best to make a quick turn around. This will give you time to save up for the next run pre-order also. I don't necessarily have the capitol to keep buying all these parts and making them ahead of time. The first five will be completed as soon as the processors show up, then I can begin shipping.

did you get someone for the first batch replacement? if not add me!
If you got someone already, i would like to be 1st for the 2nd batch. Make another list for the second batch, so you don't miss out on us who have been following this since the starting, in case we are not able to reply for the second batch at the given time. I NEED THIS! |

I'll just bring you cash next time we see each other
I'm pretty excited, I think I'm going to chop the fuel gauge out and put the number there, and wire the LED to the lip of the windscreen on the left or right side

First batch includes the light but no program for that. The light is doing something else to look fancy instead. You are in Bob's spot. 1) Paul 2) jdoucet93 3)Kevin Honey Badger 4)Adrian 5)Wellcraft I'll be requesting payments at the time of shipment after I personally "burn in" your gauges. They cost me $60 to make. That is zero profit, actually a hair negative profit because I'm going all the way with plugs and wires and fuses and everything for you guys to make it easier for you and look a hair more professional for me. I have to make a few dollars at some point. I'm thinking of charging $75 per gauge on the second batch. That seems about fair given the cost of $60 plus assembly and gathering up all these parts. The PCB they are coming on alone costs me about $9, the processor about $4 after shipping and the digit about $5 each so that's $20 in parts right there for example. There is quite a few mroe parts on each gauge. These things are tricky for me to assemble as well, they are so tiny! The cost also includes the lengthy program I wrote and will update later free if you guys feel like shipping them to me later down the line. Round 2... I'm asking $75 each. I believe that will be the permanent price. I'm hoping round one goes smoothly. Quote:
1)Key3thermal 2).. (add your names to the list and copy paste!) 3)Bob Headshrink? I will notify everyone on the second list when it's time to send pre-order payments so I can buy the parts. then I will notify everyone as the parts come in and the gauges get assembled. Quote:
I worry about the heat of the gauge in enclosed places but it will be good to have you test this out for me. It gets rather hot in open air but had no issues in 102* while riding around stop and go traffic for three hours the other day. I'm going to design a new power supply for them eventually. Perhaps on V3. lol As a side note.. Received the rest of the digit displays in the mail this morning. We're just waiting on one more package and the five will be completed. I need to make one more trip to the electronics shop also to get another pair of switches.

The more the Merrier! I'll place your name on the second run list.
1)Key3thermal 2)Swampotter 3)Bob Headshrink? 4)...... 5)... Let me know! Feel free to jump on list two if it strikes you right. It's a ways off and there is no obligation.. anyone can jump on/off a list at any time. (until I ask for payments) It seems there is enough interest that if somebody passes one up, someone else will fill the spot.

My thoughts exactly.
The more people that see it and like it, the better. I can take a bit of money from the small gains of round two and use them toward shipping to Brazil to spread the word. I'm pretty sure this will work on other bikes too. Maybe it'll catch on some day. throw it on any ol' motorcycle with six speeds. I can convert the program for five speed motorcycles also. I think it will work on any motorcycle! NSR's, honda 80's SDG speed mini 110, dirt, street, shifter kart, lawnmower with a gearbox? If I had a marketing team I'd have them advertise the displays in every catagory on ebay possible and simply modify the program and switches to match the vehicle. Just wait until I get more development done. hahaha I will make it better soon.

There was a '?' after my name on the list. If that was to confirm my interest in being/staying on the 2nd list, it is confirmed. If it was to confirm Bob is Headshrink, it is also confirmed
Price is very reasonable, no need to justify it. I know we all appreciate all the R&D, labor, etc. that you have been putting into these. If enough of these got out, I would expect the manufacturers of the commercially available units would need to step it up. Might even be worth a patenting your design.

Yeah I'm sure I'll get knocked off at some point if enough people notice it.
I don't really care. lol. China copies everything anyways like it or not. I've tried to patent stuff and they just want money money money before they'll even talk to you.. I don't have money. I spent my food money on this project many times! Show me a real straight company that's willing to help.. Yeah just making sure you're good to go Bob don't know why I put the question mark in there. hehe.

One of my other million dollar ideas I came up with is a Solar Powered Skateboard. In the daytime you don't have to push it. Cover it with those flexible solar panels, put a gear motor on there with a solar power saving circuit and a big azz capacitor and away you go.
Let me know when you guys patent it I wanna try one. lol

Any way to mount the digits away from the bored? With some sort of ribbon cable? I'm thinking it would make it easier to place, and keep the heat in a more open area

I'm sure ribbon cable is perfectly doable. Welcome aboard Eddie! Hang tight for a bit while I finish up group one =) Also one more person on the second group list! 1)Key3thermal 2)Swampotter 3)Bob Headshrink 4)EddieNewYork 5)Ytse Frobozz 6)ichibunkid.206

Sounds great! Got the money set aside, just shoot me a message whenever its time to pay up.
I'm with Kevin and Diablo, numbers in the open spot next to the fuel gauge. not sure where im going to put the led right now. might pull the neutral light out of the cluster and replace it with the led.... hmmm sounds like a plan. EDIT: this would also be cool once KC releases the code for the shift light portion of the program, just pop the little green lens off of the neutral light, and your neutral light becomes your shift light. GENIUS! (this is assuming that the light will still function as the neutral light once the code is fixed) |

Early adopters can send the gauge back later for the update too. From what I gather, all I need to do is wrap a wire around the outside of a plug wire and read the pulses to get the rpm. Then set the potentiometer to fire at the rpm we select. Very doable once I understand the programming concept of that function in the chip. _________________________________________________________________ OK everyone who wants the digit separate from the PCB let me know. Who has a piece of ribbon cable we can use? Two of them already have the digits soldered in place. Do you guys want the digit separate unsoldered or do you want to send me the cable and I'll solder it for you?

I will leave a length of wire hanging off your gauge to which you can attach your LED.
Be careful with the wires though, try and get them mounted to where they wont bend much and flex and break off the pcb. all this is good for me. It tests my skills as a programmer for sure. Programming in C to make these microcontrollers conform to your will is no easy task. I look forward to the time I will be spending in R&D trying to get the shift light working as stated above. It's funny it seems like it will be impossible to do because I don't know the exact word string to make it work at this very moment but eventually I will. So weird to see it like that lol. It's like an unsolved math problem and requires heavy concentration, but you can do it and when it's done correctly you feel satisfied.

I did two years of computer science in high school and managed to make a game where you could jump, kick, punch, run, walk, and crouch. and it took my an insane amount of time to do even with the help of a teacher and all the books i could ever hope for. and it was in C++ which isnt really that hard to work with at all. So i definitely applaud the effort (and success) here. Great job!

Check it out.
Finished four of the switch brackets with switches mounted. This is how the gauge senses the shifts! There is also a neutral sensor input! You guys will have to CAREFULLY mount this switch assembly on your sprocket cover, just above the switch linkages. When the switch linkages hit the switches, the gauge sees the shift! As long as you have it adjusted right, it works perfectly. I'm hoping you guys can carefully mount these brackets on your sprocket covers. If you have any doubts, now is the time to bail out. haha.

For wiring to the rest of the bike...
The sprocket cover switches ground goes to the sprocket cover bolt by the lug termination. The other two wires use spade connectors and go up to the gauge. I run them along the frame with the tap to the neutral wire too. Everything is modular and disconnects. There is three wires to the switches and three terminations.

Here you go. The switch system complete.
Shift and switch gears like normal. When the switches are adjusted properly, they do not allow for false shifting. That is the beauty of the limit switches and the ninja 250R gearbox. Then, when you have a neutral line tap and know neutral, the bike never messes up the gauge count and the gauge automatically can reset itself if you shift to neutral or keep shifting down into first gear unto the gauge matches the trany gear. Hahaha, when I get the RPM part done, magic is going to happen. I bet you I end up building an entire useful micro replacement dash for the ninja eventually.

Correct me if necessary. Should I jump onto this electronic odyssey AND I want to have a non-stock ninja rear set, I should not install the micro-switch housing UNTIL I have successfully installed my desired rear set. Yes/No

As long as your rearsets use the stock shift arm clamp they will be OK. you may install before or after either way in this case.
I am using the woodcraft rearsets with the stock shift lever and shift clamp. I do not know if other rearsets come with a new shift clamp or not. If this piece is stock on your bike, you can use the current shift style shift switches/bracket. Otherwise, you may have to devise your own two limit switches, which is perfectly reasonable as well! It'll work on anything with an up and downshift with a bit of modifications.

The first two of the first five are complete and I can ship them now to save me time when the rest of the parts come for the next three.
Who is ready to send payment and receive a gear display? Here is what you will receive. I'm going to include a wiring diagram too and when you guys get them I will post pics of how I installed mine to help you. From left to right: The fused wiring harness you install on the bike; The gauge with one extra wire for the RPM for later; the switch bracket assembly you install on the sprocket cover. (You guys will have to supply some hookup wire and some crimping connectors for yourselves. Basically stereo installation equipment) If you've done a car stereo, chances are you will nail this. Who is ready? I will add the RPM upgrade later free.
