rotten luck man, what's the damage to you and the bike?
and I hope you were in california so it doesn't automatically become your fault for lanesplitting when there was nothing you could have done in that situation other than lane-split on the drivers side as opposed to passengers side |

Hope those bare looking ankles are ok!
Splitting at 35mph! There are exceptions, but generally I try to keep my lane splitting below 20MPH. Considering how close I am to danger when I lane split, I just don't feel I can react in time above 20MPH. The red car was clearly braking before it arrived at that gap in the parked cars. The rider even seemed to acknowledge this as he slowed down as well... he didn't slow down enough though. Maybe he was in a rush? Good find @Kokosun! Glad it wasn't you. We are supposed to be riding next weekend! |

Splitting next to parked cars at speed like that is rolling the dice. It was only a matter of time.

You can't expect the cage driver in that situation to check the non existent lane to their right for motorcycles splitting like an idiot. I put no fault on the driver.

If you have lightning-fast ninja reflexes lane splitting is perfectly safe.
(However, finding out that you only had an overload of testosterone in your bloodstream instead of lightning-fast ninja reflexes can be really painful) |

I only lane split between lanes 1 and 2 (the 2 innermost) because of this. Too much stuff going on when splitting next to parked cars: cars coming in and out of parking spots, people opening doors, cars making right turns, cars going in and coming out of driveways, etc.

* senses a victim of anti lane splitting propaganda * There's a thing (usually in your right hand) called a throttle. It lets you adjust the speed of your motorcycle. When lane splitting you can adjust the speed of your motorcycle such that you're going slow enough to easily deal with any hazards that occur. Lane splitting is common place here. The majority of lane splitting I see is done at very slow speeds (~10MPH) between cars. Lightning reflexes are not required at those kind of speeds; just attentiveness. |

I'm with the majority on this one...
I only split lanes in the left lanes, never in between parked cars (^^^just for this reason alone^^^)

The owner of this video has this written in the description of his Youtube page (for this video):
Accident report: Crashed in-front of radio shack, showed the gopro video to the officer who found the car driver guilty. Also sent it to the driver's insurance company and now they accept full responsibility. The car driver's insurance will pay for everything +settlement. This happened in california where lane splitting is legal. Does that seem right? Driver of cage is at fault? I would've thought that the motorcycle was to blame...

I doubt that.
First, police officers don't "find driver's guilty." They are cops, not judges. Second, insurance companies don't roll over very easily. Even on cases where there insured are clearly at fault, the insurance company will fight. In this case, I doubt an insurance company is going to voluntarily pay anything after seeing that video of a very reckless motorcycle rider. |

If the finding / settlement happened as described in the youtube comments, the rider was particularly lucky. I'd agree with the comments in this thread that the rider's choices had a very direct impact (so to speak) on this collision occurring, so it's surprising that the car's insurance agreed to a settlement that easily. Putting that aside, seems to me it's a heck of a lot more effective to avoid getting into accidents like this in the first place, than hoping to be lucky after one has already taken place.

splitting on the right of cars? guaranteed crash.
splitting within door reach of parked cars? guaranteed crash. two at once? crash sooner.

I blame the bike 100%. His speedo shows 39 mph and the speed limit is 35 mph.

Dumb place to lane split. I don't know how it's not illegal to lanesplit between parked cars/parks and traffic.

I think I know where that is - if I am right then its usually a bad idea to split lanes in that area in general

Apparently though, my comment bothered your own personal feelings about lane-splitting and you felt it was necessary to defend the practice. Remember, I was just commenting on the video, not indicting or calling for the end of the practice. I don't need a pedantic explanation from you on how lane splitting can be safe. I just don't care. So relax about it. |

To me that seems like it was all the riders fault. Even if he knew what he was doing you can't trust other drivers.

If you wanted to comment on just the lane splitting practices of the guy in the video, you could say: "The man in the video was lane-splitting in an unsafe manor." Making mistakes are fine. I make mistakes. You could have just told me that your comment was a mistake and you meant to imply something else. Instead you get all defensive and tell me my comment was pedantic. Also: the reason I gave my "pedantic explanation" on why lane splitting can be safe, is because I made a statement contrary to your statement. I didn't want to just blurt out an opinion not backed up by anything. I wanted to give a rational justification for my contrary opinion. Also: the use of a phrase like "my comment bothered your own personal feelings" implies that my opinions stem from nothing more than "personal feelings" rather than stemming from my observations of objective reality. That's a falacious argument. |

So you're saying that having lightning-fast ninja reflexes wouldn't make you perfectly safe during lane-splitting?
I said it, so that's my opinion. And don't go getting all offended when I attribute biases to you after you did the same thing to me, unless you believe that you're somehow entitled to the enforcement of your own double standards. yes... in case you don't remember doing it, you did: Quote:

I don't lane split unless it's in between 2 rows of stopped cars, and I don't move faster than 20KPH. Not worth risking other wise.
