5 months ago When I went to look at the bike the po jump started it off his quad and it did run not great but it ran. When I got it home I wanted to run some fresh gas with stabil through the carbs before winter came. With a good battery the bike would not even turn over. I found most of the fuses were blown because the po attempted to wire an aftermarket tail light. Once I separated the bundle of wires and replace the fuses the bike started only for a few minutes before I noticed it a clacking sound getting noticeably louder. All the oil that was in the bike was now on the garage floor. I quickly shut it off - what the heck felt like sabotage. I’m sure it was just coincidence but what else would I find wrong with my CL special?
I got the exhaust all mounted up, the seat covered. |

Oil drain plug loose?
Oil filter bolt loose? Side cases leaking? Seems there's an unlimited places that can leak oil. After replacing at least 10 gaskets on my street pre-gen and still having leaks in new uncharted territory, I gave up and bought another engine that wasn't leaking. |

It was the oil filter bolt. I used a k&n filter replaced both o-rings and topped er off with some Rotella T6 full synthetic. I’m only moments away from starting this thing up - fingers crossed.

Got it running over the weekend and it seems it idle fine and exhaust sounds interesting - a little on the loud side like grunting bees. Then I lost my mind and made a temporary fuel tank out of a sea foam can. Dropped it in the fill port of the tank ran a piece of tubing to the carbs and rode it about a mile and back. First impression- handling was not what I’m use to short wheel base and small flickable front tire. The shifter was set way too high had to raise my whole foot to kick it into higher gears. When coming to a stop I seem to give it throttle as I am braking. Pretty much all me getting use to a new bike. I repositioned the shifter, topped off my seafoam can with some premium and checked the tires before my next ride. 20 psi in both! What a fool! Handling was way better after the correct tire pressure, duh! Went 6 miles started sputtering last quarter mile and died as I was coasting into the driveway- totally out of gas, lol. Yep fool is right.

Here’s a better look at the front fender. The silver is a textured “hammered” paint semi gloss with some metallic in it. Also on the first ride noticed slight popping as I would coast down hills - running lean? I haven’t synced the carbs yet and I think the factory plugs are over the pilot screws. Any suggestions on adjusting them?

Popping is the coast-enricher not working. Make sure hoses going to it is secure. And test it making sure it operates when vacuum applied.
Try running a can of fuel-system cleaner with healthy dose of PEA to clean out carbs. Otherwise, they'll need complete disassembly for ultrasonic cleaning and thorough flossing. |

Thanks, I will check those out. I plugged the vac port that connects to the tank and have it gravity fed it the other hose that goes between the carbs is intact. It’s the silver disk looking things on the side of the carbs right? Also I do want to adj the mixture screws. 2.5 turns about right and is it turn in to richen ond out to lean? It’s not backfiring just popping a bit.

Yup, coast-enricher is little UFO device on side of carb. It's vacuum-activated and operates a plunger in carbs.
For pilot screws, all the way in is leanest. Then unscrew 2.5 turns to richen mixture. |

Disassembled the CE - everything looked good - no tears in the diaphragm cleaned and then re-assembled. Rechecked hoses and the vac port that goes to the fuel valve was completely open. The cap I put on it came off! Recapped with a silicon plug and went for a test ride - No popping at all! Thanks again for pointing me I the right direction. Also found front brake switch is bad. May have to upgrade the rear shock with a new-gen. Would y’all say it makes a big difference?

Depends upon your weight.
Shock is actually not that different. It's the change in leverage ratios in knuckle/linkage that makes it stiffer. So upgrade both at same time. |

The funky ninja project has come to a sad and destructive end - this will be my final post. A mile from my house on one of the few roads that are straight I planed on running it through all 6 gears. As I made the u-turn still in frist I revd the throttle and popped the cluch in second. Deceived by smaller size of this bike I could not fathom what happened next. The front end launched straight up into the air. I don’t know how long I held on before it pitched and then sky pavement sky pavement. A truck pulled up right after and a nice man and his son got out to help. End result I broke my right leg - tibia and fibula below the knee. I got more hardware in there than Lowe’s. I know this was totally my fault - it was meant to be a fun little bike to kick around on. I did not show the beloved Ninja 250 the respect it deserves especially in the VERY short time I road it. The bike itself is salvageable but may take another form in the distant future. I have the next 12 weeks to think about things. My family and my coworkers are suffering too - For the love of motorcycles! I want to thanks the good people on Ninjette for the encouragement and positivity. God bless, this is Raddad70 signing out.
