Stock Rear Axle Nut Wrench + Extension
So, has anyone here actually used the above combo to successfully loosened the rear axle nut without damage to the nut?
I ask because I am planning a somewhat long trip and those two tools are easier to carry than a 1/2" drive 15" breaker bar which is what I normally use to do chain adjustments. Any recommendations for any other easy to carry tool/method to do this are also welcome. |

I've never used the stock wrench on the 250R, but for dirt bikes, I carry light wrenches that fit the axle nut and stand on the wrench to break the nut loose. Try it and see if that method will work on the Ninja.
I can't see carrying around a breaker bar and appropriate socket. |

I've used it a few times, just to see how well it works, and it does the job just fine. To apply force, I just kick it with my heel and it loosens right up! I have never used the extension, and in fact didn't even realize it was an extension until a good bit later, and then only ever used it when adjusting the rear shock. Anyways, the fit was surprisingly tight for a cheap stamped wrench, and it has a mildly beefy construction (for a cheap stamped wrench), so I wouldn't be concerned about it not doing what you need it do. Of course, when doing that stuff I do typically use an actual socket and breaker bar, but it doesn't hurt to know your options!
But, in general, I can do (and have done) most typical work on my bike with the tools I keep in the trunk. I made a larger canvas bag to hold a few extra tools like a real screwdriver, a 1/4" socket driver, a 19mm wrench (for lowering the bike for my GF), and a small pouch with bits and allen keys and such. The rest of the tools are the stock ones, and they actually work surprisingly well, and I give kudos to Kawasaki for including an actual workable tool kit with the bike!

I wish I would have known that I had that wrench before I used a pair of pliers to loosen my rear axle bolt. Lol, I need more tools.

How long of a trip? Do you really need to adjust the chain before you get back?

I think I might just get a 3/8 to 1/2 drive adapter and use a pipe over my 10 inch breaker bar to do the same. Or somehow strap the 15" bar to the frame.

Or a pair of 10" Knipex cobra pliers. I know some of you don't like using them, but they're awesome. I have a 7" pair. That way I can toss away the breaker bar and the 22/24mm sockets. Lighter too.

My axle and chain got inexplicably tight and I couldn't loosen it without it lifting the bike off the stand (axle inserted from the right; could not push down on opposite side due to passenger peg in the way). I even added the shock preload adjustment spanner wrench in the other side for extra leverage and it took me about two hours to loosen it with the tools I had.
