Going rogue for the weekend...
So...as some of you may know from the !%@*#$%!)@#&!%@ I crashed! forum, I went down in a pile of gravel the other day putting my bike out of commission...on this beautiful Labor Day Weekend. Well, rather than cry about it, I drove up to the Harley dealership in Danbury, CT and got me some wheels for the weekend!
download by cshaffer18, on Flickr Rt. 22 - White Plains, NY IMG_4930 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Got almost 300 miles in the first day which included a run up to Chaplin, CT to get the part I needed to get the Ninja back on the road. Started out in Stamford, CT and headed up past Candlewood Lake to start the second day. IMG_4951 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Apparently I was really enjoying the ride! IMG_4956 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Rode so far, I found Fall somewhere in Mass.! IMG_4957 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Then rode a very local and fun route all the way back to Yonkers, NY where it is still summer. lol. IMG_4958 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Then it was back to Stamford, CT for the night. Another trip in order for tomorrow. Love the Ninja, but could never have ridden this long and this far in two days on it! When Spring comes I think a second bike may be in order...probably not a Harley, but some cruiser to ride on the weekends, while I plan to keep the Ninja for commuting and some serious fun! |

Yep...just a rental. I really don't see myself as a Harley guy, but I do think I want to add a cruiser of some kind to the "fleet" at some point soon. I love to ride, and the Ninja just doesn't allow me to ride for that kind of time and distance comfortably. At the same time, I would not want to ride this thing through downtown Stamford everyday to work. Just not worth the effort. I think I need both!

It depends on the bike and length of rental, but it's about a couple hundred a day with all the insurance and crap...I paid $465 for 3 days - that's soup to nuts - rental, taxes, insurance, and they include a helmet, bike bag, and rain gear. Unlimited Miles.

That's a cool idea renting a bike for the weekend. I wouldn't mind renting a V-Rod for the weekend.

So other than comfort - how does it compare? Handling? Weight? Highway?
I thought about doing the same thing when I visited West Virginia - because I wanted to ride Skyline Drive but, I was worried that it would be so different from the Ninja - that I wouldn't have any fun ('cause I wouldn't trust it as much). Plus, I could only find HD's to rent - I really would have wanted something else. |

Back out on the road today...most of it in an absolute deluge! Never could've pulled that ride off on the Ninja...went through some serious driving rain, and small lakes that formed on the road!
Started in Stamford, CT...next thing you know... Back in Mass...lol. IMG_4970 by cshaffer18, on Flickr But that wasn't enough...next up Vermont! Hey...the guy said it was unlimited mileage...sounded like a challenge to me! IMG_4962 by cshaffer18, on Flickr IMG_4966 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Incredible ride thru the rain, fog and clearing... IMG_4995 by cshaffer18, on Flickr IMG_4994 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Two pretty cool pieces of machinery! IMG_5004 by cshaffer18, on Flickr Almost 300 miles again today...and all in all over 800 miles in 3 days...actually will be over 900 by the time I take it back in the morning. I'll tell you what...it's really an apples to oranges comparison. Completely unfair to try and do so. They both have their strengths and both have their weaknesses. I went into it thinking I may learn I want a Cruiser instead of the Ninja, but thought there was a chance I would learn that I did not want a Cruiser and just upgrade my 250 or even just keep the 250. I came out of it realizing I probably want to keep my 250 AND get a Cruiser of some kind...although I really doubt it will be a Harley. This bike has power, but it lacks in agility, mobility and the fun factor that is unique to the Ninja 250. The Harley had more torque and overall power, but between having to slow down in twisties, and feeling pretty maxed out in the 75-80mph range whereas I have often traveled in excess of 90 mph comfortably on the Ninja...for trips under an hour, I definitely can get there faster and easier on the Ninja. The Ninja is perfect for commuting to work and tearing up the twisties...but a Cruiser is perfect for long trips on the weekends or even longer. Final Answer: I need both! |
