Graduated from SUNY IT in Utica, NY with a BS in computer science in 2009.
Currently I'm an On Line Specialist for a power utility on Long Island. My responsibilities pretty much are composed of supporting and maintaining the computer system (called a SCADA EMS) that the control room uses to monitor and control the electric grid here. Also I program web applications and manage databases that we use in our department on a day to day basis. I'd rather have Yakaru's job though :P Recently finished paying off my student loans and will hopefully have my car paid off by the end of this summer. At which point I will begin the painful process of trying to become a home owner in the unjustly overpriced market of Long Island. |

I'm a professional mechanic but most of what I do is change tires and oil.
x2 on wanting Yakaru's job.

I teach philosophy -- ethics, bioethics and logic -- at a large private university. I also have a research fellowship at a major bioethics institute, which I'm using to work on 'procreative ethics' and the ethics of adoption.
But I, too, would rather have your job, Yakaru! |

I make steel roofing and siding. It's an easy job, but it seems few people can understand how to run the machine. I guess it makes sense why they offered me a maintenance job, I generally fixed my own problems instead of having to call the maintenance guy. The pay is poor compared to other jobs in the industry, but $13.50 as just a machine operator isn't bad considering my last job was in retail...and I got fired. ...it was for parking my bicycle where one fork truck gets parked at night and the area isn't used at all during the day. Thank you Menards, I am a couple steps closer to getting a real job.

I used to do game testing (basically the one that screws with people like Yakaru's design and code and what-not to see what happens when you do B instead of A), now days I'm spread across testing games, applications, web development, and digital media.
Can't complain too much; I have a pretty easy job for the most part. |

Currently on furlough, partially due to the shutdown and partially due to contract issues, which are exacerbated by the shutdown.

Thanks. Figured I missed it.
So, for me. I'm an aircraft structural engineer. I keep things flying....on paper. Ok, I do the math that makes sure flying things don't break and fall outta the sky. I've worked on lots of VIP aircraft interiors (people with more money than they know what to do with....). Now, I work on heavy lift helicopters, specifically, the Air-Crane. Like this. A couple of our birds are currently fighting the fires in SoCal. I've been lucky enough to get to ride on this beast a few times, and it is a fun ride (we even did autorotation twice while I was along for the ride). BTW, there are some videos on photobucket there showing the water drop. Pretty impressive to see 2400 gallons drop in about 8 seconds. I'm a GIS Analyst with a workload leaning more toward the map side than the analyst side. Maybe that's helped skew my sense of distance as I typically look at whole counties and states vs cities.

hahahahahaha who will be the first to insult my 3rd grade sense of humor? Me personally, I sell crack. When it doesn't pay well enough, I'm a mercenary. Yep, I'll take any job. As long as the pay is enough. Don't get me wrong, I'm no military contractor. I used to have morals, now I just have priorities. As we all know, cash is king.

I am a third level Somm (CS CMS), I spent 20 years traveling, learning, talkin' and selling high-end juice. Ran some hotels, some white table cloths and eventuality a good deal of the country for a very well know outfit out of Santa Rosa.
I stepped away from the travel and started a little business while the wife returned to F&B management. We bugged out to the great white North and I am now surrounded by wonderful roads and beautiful views, except for the 8 months of snow... what the hell, keeps the weak away. And I have no neighbors, no sirens, no lawn mowers, no crime, instead I have Bear, lots of Turkey and Deer. So now I am a humble pattern maker (restos and custom rifle stocks), juice consultant and I run a small Topless club (the bar part) for an old friend, funny how life works out eh? |

Do you start off hauling freight etc? I can't imagine the stress though hauling a plane full of passengers for the very first time....talk about being nervous.

I can't even ride a motorcycle with a passenger. I don't know how you fly those planes. Then there is bad weather and night time.

I was a flight instructor before being hired by the airline, never flew cargo. By the time I started at the airline, the passengers weren't much of a factor. Initially, there was so much to learn that the passengers didn't even really register, and once I had enough of a handle on it to think about them, it didn't worry me anymore. I prefer flying at night more than daytime, much less bright and usually quieter on the radio. I love bad weather, just not too much at a time, it's very fatiguing.
