Pretty! I was thinking about getting a red one but couldn't find a red sprocket made with steel, my bike is my main mode of transportation and aluminum wouldn't last long enough. Anyway I'm happy with what I got and keeping the aesthetics of the bike simple.

This is my first aluminum sprocket, but then again, it is a 250 and not putting out much power so the sprocket should last fine.

Looks good! You'll be fine. Rear sprocket teeth take approximately one third the load of those experienced by the front sprocket (exact ratio dependent upon numbers of teeth, of course). Now your front and rear sprockets should wear out in tandem.

Pulled her out, notice oil cap very loose (tightened), and went for an easy 35 miles of exploring my area.
Rever (rever.co) has an interesting new bike app and they are giving away $10 for riding 200 miles or $100 for documenting 500 miles in their new app. I've installed the app and signed up for the challenge on their website. Small potatoes for many of you guys, but a nice step up in mileage for me. |

Went for a ride and around the time i turned to go home the back end started to act really weird and squirrely like the rear end was going to kick out, so i high tailed back home and switched rear wheels in hopes it was just a bad wheel bearing. Just as i lift the bike up on the stand you could move the wheel from side to side from the bad bearing on the brake side crapping out, thankfully i had another wheel with tire on it all aired up and ready to roll.
Now it's time to get some new wheel bearings for it. |

Went for my first ride with my 16 yo daughter. Me on the 2001 and her on the 1989. Just went around the neighborhood, down a back road to the next subdivision. Saw a little girl with a lemonade stand so we stopped to encourage her entrepreneurship.

Baby got new shoes!
Thanks to this board I went with Bridgestone BT-45s. While there I asked about how to do the chain without a center stand. So they sold me a used lift and ordered the (nuts, brackets, spool-thingy's?) that it grabs on to lift the bike with. Gosh I am so not a wrencher! I was married last time I owned a motorcycle. It is amazing how much he did behind the scenes so that I could just hop on a ride.
Anyway!!!! Knowledge is power and the folks at Moramoto are absolutely awesome. They have been very kind and helpful getting me on my beautiful little steed. The attached picture was my baby yesterday morning as the sun came up. I'll take another picture with the new Bridgestones on shortly. BTW, I went with an ogio tankbag to hold my raingear and spare flip-phone. and I bought a steel cable to add to the kryptonite lock. I run the lock through the d-ring on the tank bag and run the cable through the back tire. You can see the cable and D-lock on the back seat. I put a plastic bag over the tank bag and I leave it like that in the work parking lot through all the Florida sun-showers during the day. So far the set up is working out pretty good. I had her on the highway for the first time this morning as well. I am SO SO SO HAPPY to be riding again. That was a looooooooooong 6 years without a bike. And it is true: "It is just like riding a bike." I was worried I'd forgotten how to ride but all my instincts seem to still be there. My hands and feet and eyeballs picked it all right back up. I was doing head-checks again before I even remembered to be doing head-checks. Whew! The only thing I wish I had now was a large sign to hold up for people who seem unable to shut up about my nasty accident. "NO **** ASSHOLES! I remember better than you how many surgeries that was. I'd have been dead if I'd hit her in my truck. The bike actually saved me." But there is no convincing them of that. So pardon my cursing but WOW I wish people would STFU about how risky riding a bike is while they are over-eating and smoking their cigarettes and screwing hookers behind their wife's back. Pick your poison is my only reply to them because no one gets out of life alive and dying at 95 in a wheelchair ain't all THAT grand. OK. Enough complaining about idiots! Back to smiling about riding again. Ride safe everyone!!! |

Yep, that's the going theory from a couple sources. My friend who's going to help me wants to do a compression check/test/thingy(?) and has since I recruited his help for this task. When I reported the smoke, now he really wants to do it.
Hope I am relaying that right. Still a "magic box" to me.

Hey if you end up doing valve seals, I modded a Spark plug socket to use with a C clamp in order to compress the valve springs and still get the keepers out. Let me know if you want to borrow it. Just send it back when you're done.

What do you have on the bike? Around 90K miles? Shouldn't need a rebuild yet!
I'd try a little heavier oil before messing with rings, seals, etc. Perhaps 20W50 is in order for the next oil change. Especially for hard use in a warm climate. |

I don't think it needs a rebuild (unless that's the point of checking seals?) I just need to sit down and learn how to do things like valve adjustments and whatever else the manual calls for.
Um, it's been going down just "a splash" in between oil changes every 5k. barely pour any in and the level goes back up to the top mark on the window.

^^^^^ lol, even mine wasn't super bad. 1/4 quart in 3500 miles. Just enough to take the sight glass from high to low between changes. But it bothered me so I did new seals and rings. No more oil burn!
My only question is if her oily cloud and smell is on decel after downshifting or on the initial blip to rev match for downshifting? I don't know if that was mentioned. |

Lol I also had a whole shop and help and equipment at my disposal and did way more to the bike than just rings and seals. Thermobob, blasted and painted and serviced everything Id been putting off servicing and had wanted to refinish, new bixenon headlight setup that I still haven't finished my lens on, etc. It was a winter project for the sake of tinkering while it was not riding weather. Plus I learned a lot. I remember we had this discussion before and I don't regret anything I did
That nasty gray cloud of smoke at startup was annoying too. Did I mention we spent most of jan and feb around 10 degrees and it rained all of May and june? Literally all of it. |

Who needs a Corbin seat when you have a throw pillow and duct tape?
I had to ride to Atlanta and back the other day. 200 miles each way. I went to a show and my truck's fuel pump died. The damn thing worked wonders! I'd do it again if I had to!

I've just rolled over 7k miles(34k total) I've put on SERENITY since I purchased her last spring, it's been great.
After a nice long ride today, after I did the valve adjustment, I noticed an oil leak coming from the valve cover, so I double check the 4 bolts, all is good. So I'm guessing the rubber gasket is no longer good. So do I purchase a new one along with the other ones for the valve cover, or be cheap and use some RTV on the old dried out rubber gasket? And for @The Red Scourge try this next time., or try what I did https://www.ninjette.org/forums/blog.php?b=8352

Finally made time to put on the new chain and rear sprocket (14/42), plus a custom machined kickstand... Sadly the kickstand had the wrong angle that made the bike lean way to much to the left and had to put back the old kickstand
