First Aid
I always keep a first aid kit in the car. I've been wanting to carry a convenient one on the bike as well. Something like an altoids tin sized one thats catered to the kinds of injuries you'd get on the bike. Something to patch yourself (or someone else) together good enough to get them to proper medical care, or to fix boo-boos.
So far I've got: 3x alcohol wipes Itty bitty Swiss Army Knife Small roll of medical tape Tube of Superglue (great for papercuts!) 3x gauze pads Piece of nylon cord (makeshift tourniquet) Tube of neosporin Ibuprofen Chewable pepto bismol tabs I've still got some room in the tin. I'll add more gauze if nothing else. Anything I should either omit or add to my little kit? I know we got some medical folks. What would be optimal for motorcycles crash injuries? |

The thing that comes to mind would be something to immobilize an injury but I don't know how you'd fit that in a tin that small. Other than that, you'll have bleeding, so gauze pads to put pressure on it will be the thing.
Other than that, sounds like a pretty decent kit and it's a good idea to have a little something. |

I added butterfly bandages. I considered sutures but I'm not really qualified to use that. I'm not squeamish, but I think it'd likely create more complications with the injury and that the butterfly bandage is the way to go so I could have a professional stitch me/whoever up properly later, if it's necessary. I already carry a sewing kit in my wallet, anyway, so if it REALLY was that bad and there wasn't any hope that I/whoever could make it to the hospital in time, I could make do. But, I'm doubtful of such a wild scenario happening.

How did I forget gloves? And a roll of gauze is actually probably better than the 2x2 patches I have. Lemme see if that works. I have a roll around here, somewhere.

Gauze, alcohol wipes and ice packs were my most commonly used supplies when working stand-by EMT jobs at events.
Makeshift tourniquets need some sort of windlass to tighten the cord. Commercial products such as the CAT have been proven to be very effective/consistent and are the preferred tool for the job. https://www.amazon.com/Application-T.../dp/B00MA6XVVC |

Some of this stuff won't fit in an altoids tin. I think I'll ditch the tin and use a heavy zippy bag with the tin inside of it containing things that I dont want to get smooshed.

I use a military medic pouch for my first aid kit. I don't feel like you can hold enough in an altoids tin to be that useful.
Off the top of my head, my first aid kit has: gloves, assorted gauze pads, assorted band aids, sports tape, dinner SAM splints, ibuprofen, antibiotic ointment, and pocket knife. Pretty sure there's a few more things I don't remember. I also have an emergency blanket and sightly larger SAM splints in my pouch of emergency bike repair stuff. I plan to add medical shears, a CAT tourniquet, and something like an asherman chest seal to the kit. Maybe more. I also have a pocket mask for cpr but it's too large for me to give it a permanent spot in my top case.

It's a bit bigger than an altoids tin. It used to contain a wallet. I call all small tins altoids tins.
Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely include a CAT tourniquet. I tried tying the paracord around my arm and I couldn't even get it to tingle at my fingertips, meaning it's not cutting off blood flow as efficiently as a proper tourniquet should. |
