You know the saying? "I'm just the messenger!" I definitely think the law of economics applies in the case of 250R. Where there is a demand..........!

The prices for the 250s seem $500-$800 too low. At least by my local craigslist listings. I wish I could find an 08 for $2500.

This is why I stick with the more realistic values posted by KBB. On NADA they list my bike as only worth about $835 vs $1450 from KBB (that's retail and not trade-in). Now this comes out and says that my bike might be worth all of $600? BULL$H**t I cry. I think that NADA and this list are heavily 'influenced' by the dealerships to allow them to rip us off if we try to trade them in.

Here's what will happen. You go to trade in your 250 for a bigger bike. They bring up this list and tell you that's all it's worth and that the dealership is doing you favor by giving you maybe $100 more just to be nice. Then they'll turn around and add at least $1000 to it and put it on the showroom floor. I've seen it happen way too many times. Even KBB knows this happens and shows prices for both trade-in and retail sale. (my bike was about $945 trade-in vs about $1450 for retail)

Considering I've seen 2000+'s for $1800, there's no way in hell a '94 is worth $1450.

The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the unit has been fully reconditioned and is in excellent condition. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the unit's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.

Keep in mind that from 1988 - 2007 they didn't change anything on the 250. If a 1990 was maintained, kept in a garage, has all new seals and rubber with virtually no wear on it, it will fetch about the same price as a 2000 due to the bikes being identical. The 250 is pretty much the only bike capable of doing that (ninja 500 is a close second) which is why the pre-gen especially is quoted as the best starter bike. You can buy a used one for under $2k, ride/maintain it for a year and sell it for almost as much as you paid. I see it happen all the time.

KBB prices that are more in line with what the market bears is the KBB POP values, not the retail values which are what dealers ask for for a fully reconditioned, warrantied vehicle (or are supposed to be).

When I use KBB for valuation, those retail numbers are pie in the sky asking prices that almost no one pays.

As with everything that has value, the price is exactly what one particular buyer is willing to pay you for it given your particular constraints (location, timing, etc.). Ballpark estimates are nice, but put a big uncertainty on any of those.

From what I've experienced before buying a 250 new, these prices are too low for my area anyway. However, I was picky and from the limited availability and high prices of a used 08 or 09 250 I chose to bite the bullet and spend more for a new one.

Yep, I believe 'lowballers' is the term for these people. As long as you aren't desperate to sell right away, then you can wait for a legitimate offer. Good luck!

yeah, I've found that its just better to state your firm price and normally that will avoid most lowballers but as far as emails go its easy to delete so

If you brought a dealer a brand new 09 250, they would only give you about $2300.

As I stated, I go with the retail value which KBB says is for dealership selling and person to person selling. They have a separate lower pricing for trade-in. Such as my bike comes up as about $930 trade-in (which I thought I put in one of my posts) and about $1450 for retail.

Nada puts the bike between $480 to $630. The rear shock (that blew out on me recently) if bought from Kawi would cost me $400 alone (I checked ).

Also, kbb lists the 2009 at $1910 trade-in and $2860 retail. Nada lists the 2009 between $2,495 to $3,280.

I think the whole motorcycle industry needs to settle a little more with pricing and such. So much easier to gauge the price and worth of a car then a bike it seems.

Value is determind by demand, utility, scarcity and transferability.

It can be highly localized. So, in other words, in some areas the price of a 250 will be a lot more than others.

Then, you have to take into account the mods. You add the price of the mods and then discount for depreciation. You can find the depreciation rate by averaging the sales of a particular model/year with another with and without the mod. I can go on and on, but the bottom line is that Craigslist and Ebay are good indicators of what the market is doing.

KBB is of little value to any of us. To a dealer, it is of value.

Remember this: value is determined what someone is willing to pay for what you got.

This is best shown in auctions and purchases made by those with money to burn. Like the oil sheik that bought the Saudi Arabian license plate number "1" for $14.5 million recently.

What is it worth?

Those guides are a good place to start, but pricing is so situational:

Let's say the blue book value on 12oz of soda is $.50, however

Large fastfood chains pay $.05
You can buy by the 2liter, and 12oz costs you $.18
Buy a case of cans and now you're at $.25
Vending machines run $.50 to $2.00
At a baseball game, you pay $6

I think I slightly overpaid for my '09, but the stars were all in alignment: ready when I wanted it, seller was 5 miles from me (not in West Va), 125 miles, so I got that "off the lot" feel.

tl;dr: People will pay various amounts for the same thing, based on the situation.
