Been through it 3 times and the 4th kid starts at community college nearby next week.
You'll survive. You will also make some adjustments around home with the kid gone. Don't be that helicopter parent hovering over your kid at college. It is their time to grow and learn. 2 hrs away isn't too bad, my kids schools were usually 3-4 hrs away. Nice balance they are far enough that they aren't coming home every weekend, but close enough you can easily make the trip to get them and come back home in a day. My next door neighbor's daughter want to school only 45 mins away. She was home every weekend, I think that's too close. |

It's a bitter sweet time. You want your kids to learn and grow, but it's tough letting them go.
You and your wife will probably shed a few tears on the way home. There is a very good chance you will get a call in a few weeks or months where the kid is ready to drop out and come home. Their college experience will really depend upon how active they are, encourage them to get out, join clubs, sports, ect... We were pretty lucky with our first one, she had an athletic scholarship so from the moment she showed up at school she had support from the team, coach, and athletic department. And she was the only freshman joining the team that year, so she immediately had a bunch of big brothers and sisters looking out for her. All four of our kids had worked summers at our council boy scout camp so they were used to being on their own a bit, doing laundry, ect..... Is your daughter an only child? How much experience does she have away from home on her own? (summer camp, traveling, ect...) |

Tell your daughter to take music appreciation; my wife teaches it at UGA.
