I never do it.
Too distracting and blocks sounds I need to hear. There are times when I need all the concentration and attention I can muster - I just never know when that will be. |

Thanks for the opinion. I live in a rural area so I’m not too worried about need to hear stuff.

just like a radio in a car it can be a bad thing or not bad(not going to say good ever, you are adding a distraction to the already many thing for the brain to process), also if your using speakers in the helmet or ear buds. I don't like ear buds because they cancel out to much other stuff also which leads to not hearing the traffic around you and can be even more dangerous to use. But the music can drowned out the wind noise which is a help on longer runs like an interstate run that takes an hour or more it can actually help on the ride. Also if your running a sena set its nice because you can take phone calls with out your hands leaving the bars and the other side cant even tell your riding. Also when I'm riding the sena takes a back seat to safety, so yes sometime I only turn the sena on but no music just in case the wife calls.

I'm a musician, but oddly enough I don't listen to music that much for recreation. Might be because my wife and I have very different tastes, so it's never on at home.
I find music distracting when operating a vehicle. I tend to pay too much attention to it. In my experience, younger people are more moved by music. It can really pump you up... not necessarily the best thing on a bike. You want to be clear, focused and deliberate, not amped up. In the car and on the bike, I listen to spoken word (podcasts and the like). That engages a different part of my brain. I'm not distracted the way I would be with music for some reason. I don't find the isolation/hearing thing to be an issue. For one thing, wind noise drowns out other vehicles. For another, I always wear earplugs anyway. I use PlugUp S-Plug earbuds on the bike... mission-critical gear for me. Isolation as good as the best earplugs, and they don't stick out of your ear at all so they're all-day comfortable.

Bad idea for new riders. I like listening to music when I ride, the only downside is the ear buds are a pain in the ass. Helmet speakers are pretty spendy for good quality. Since moving to Arizona, I have not had the luxury of nice winding roads, so my rides are nearly non existent.

I've tried turning on the radio in my headset a few times, but I haven't liked it. Plus, I have to re-do it every time I turn the headset off.

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I probably shouldn’t ride with music. Thanks for all the comments.

I will be the voice of dissent... and foolishness.
I listen to music 70-80% of the time on the street though helmet mounted speakers. I also ride with earplugs in 99% of the time, which is illegal in some areas. It makes the mundane commute a lot more enjoyable. I do not ride with music when going into the canyons. I find that the music does drown out random conversation. However, if I'm at a stoplight and someone needs to talk to me (never anything important so far), I can turn off my music. However, I can still hear sirens as they are at a different frequency/pitch. I generally try to stay alert and continually scan my surroundings, so I have yet to find myself in a bad situation due to the music. Been riding with music since I bought an intercom system in 2008. |

I wear ear plugs and listen to music on my U-Clear. The music drowns out the constant tinnitus ringing that the helmet and ear plugs accentuate. Have no problem hearing what’s going on with the bike.
Can’t do podcasts though. Trying to concentrate on what they are saying while riding. The music just goes into the background and cleans out the high pitched whine of my broken ears.

I purchased a Sena 3S Bluetooth kit so I could answer the phone. Before retiring, I worked on an on-call basis and needed to accept work when available. I worked through an union with an impatient dispatcher who would go to the next guy on the list if you failed to answer. Like AchyGrappler mentioned, I too wear ear plugs to kill wind noise. Wind noise is a much bigger distraction than music. I thought music would be a distraction, but I find it to be no problem if played at decent "background" volume that allows me to hear engine and traffic noises. I've used the Bluetooth to listen to news stations, talk shows, and even baseball games without any distraction problem whatsoever.

I don't listen to music but I blast soundtracks of Formula One cars racing. I find it very relaxing.

Which era?
Those Ferrari V12s sounded like sex. The V10s were good too. V8s, OK I guess. Hybrids... meh. RPM limits caused by fuel restriction kill the appeal for me. They'd sound fine if they were allowed enough fuel to turn them up. I like the tech side... and the cars are faster than ever. But the visceral appeal of sound is a big part of F1.

The V12's have been used to emulate orchestra sounds.

No loud noise protection will lead to permanent hearing loss and leads to fatigue on long rides. Nothing safe about ether conditions.
I listen to audio books mostly fiction overdrive.com free from your local library

Well, there's Formula E...
The trouble is, Formula E sucks so bad it's unwatchable... but that's really because they only run on idiotic, ridiculously tight street circuits. Nothing but point, shoot, turn 90 degrees, repeat, with maybe an occasional hairpin. The IndyCar street races are the same. Can't really pass unless someone either hits the wall in front of you or you stuff them into it. Either way, it usually results in a pileup. Yawn. I'd like to see the cars on a real race track. The need to manage energy adds an interesting strategic element to it. There's also the whole swap-car pit stop thing... potential source of drama there.

I’ll listen to music when I’m bombing down to TN or Alabama, most local rides will have talk radio. I use my Sena almost non stop. I’ve even had a conference call while on the expressway lol

Yeah!!! This was Ferrari driven by Gerhard Berger; last of Turbo Era. Only one to win race entire season that wasn’t McLaren/Honda Prost/Senna. The wail of engine was amazing!!!
I was at smaller Streets of Willow Springs with Porsche Club and when that thing started up next door at the big track, everyone pretty much dropped everything and hung off the fence watching it go by. |
