I would appreciate some advice on a yellow and black color scheme

So, I haven't completed my other projects, but have an itch to change up the colors on my main 250 - again. This time, I'm set on yellow and black.

I picked up a parts bike, with all of the original 2004 yellow and grey factory look. I want to change it though. I'm not rebuilding this 250 -yet, just using the fairings.

Here's where we're at. I need to replace the front fender, no matter what. But, what stays yellow, and what changes to black is open to suggestion.

I am going with black wheels front and rear. And, I do not plan to keep any of the stickers - even the one on the tank ( that is clear coated in place ).

I can go chrome or black on the exhaust as well, as I already have each option.

I have searched the web for inspiration, and have found many.

I need to work around some scuffs on the yellow main upper fairing, and replace the front fender. It could be black, or yellow.

I did discover that John Deere Yellow gloss is a very, very, very close match in color ( I don't want to spend the money on the color rite exact match ).

It should work, if I repaint the entire new fender, but will likely be noticeable if I try to use it as touch up paint.

Kind of looks to me like the front vend should be yellow.

I wonder if a new gen front fender would bolt up. They have a cool shape.

Here is a more realistic version. The red would be yellow...

This would be the simpler way out, and I think that it looks good. Again, the red would be yellow.

I sorted thru all of my spare fairings, and unfortunately, I need to paint most of it. I was hoping to find the rear section, in black, in good nick. But alas, that was not the case.

The tank, upper fairing and inner pieces are staying yellow.

I need to paint a front fender and belly pan yellow to match ( John Deere Gloss Yellow - fingers crossed ).

The tail, grab bar, and side seat fairings need to be painted gloss black.

It just dawned on me, that I purchased a complete parts bike for the matching set of fairings, and now I am only using the tank and upper fairing...

I guess that I am living up to my screen name...

A heat gun and razor blade, followed up with 800 grit wet sandpaper = fail

Removing the tank decals looked foolproof on the YouTube videos that I watched on removing decals that are clear coated over.

It looks like some black stripes are now in the mix for the final version of the black and yellow color scheme...

I removed the decals from the main fairing, and mocked it up. Also, the "Ninja" decals for the tail came in ( I ordered black and yellow, in case I change my mind ).

I'm going to try to reshape the broken front fender. I have nothing to lose, and have a spare to paint yellow if it doesn't work out.

I took a cut off wheel to the fender. It isn't perfect, but is not too bad either. It should blend in nicely with all of the other flaws in this conversion.

I think his technique will work if you have a real steady hand with the Excacto knife. I would not do the WD-40 part. I would soak a paper towel with gasoline and lay it on the tank and place a layer of PreessNseal plastic wrap over that and let it sit for a while. The decal and it's adhesive don't do well when exposed to gasoline. The decal will wrinkle and the adhesive will dissolve. Then do the hair dryer trick. I don't advise using anything sharper than your fingernail to pick-off the decal. Then 1,000 grit wet/dry and a final polish. I don't think there is a clear coat under the decal as he said in the video.

I installed the modified front fender, and swapped the purple front wheel for black. Once installed, the existing cracks in the fender became prominent. I might fix and paint it, or just paint my spare and be done with it.

Good idea. I'll try that, should I decide to remove any decals in the future.

I found some aftermarket levers - for $6 USD shipped, and had them within a week.

I plan to swap the mounting blocks, from my purple set that I just removed from the Ninja. These were not sold as Ninja levers, but I hope that the mounts are a direct swap.

I started painting a few parts over the last few days. Unfortunately, things did not turn out well. I'll have to wait for it to cure and wet sand, or strip and try again...

Stripping the paint on the tank may go OK but I doubt the ABS plastic parts will fair well.

Agreed. Wet sanding the plastic. "Stripping" the metal parts.

Yep! Gawd, don't ya hate it when a paint job goes bad. It's happened to me more times than I want to admit.

Since my painting didn't work out so well the other day, and this transformation will not be perfect, I took another look at my spares - with a less critical eye. I found the complete tail section, in black, that I can use. I used a heat gun to remove the decals, and all parts need a good scrub. My only issue is the adhesive residue - I can't remove it. I tried gasoline ( which always works for me ), Goo-Gone ( soaked overnight ). I guess I'll try WD-40. I don't want to mar the plastic parts, as I don't plan to paint these. Any thoughts? Also, any tips on removing caked on tree sap?

The levers turned out OK. I painted the red selectors yellow, but it didn't coat very well. I'll try again another time.

I had varying success in removing the adhesive from the tail sections. One panel came out 99% free, another, 90% - but still has sap, the other - 2% removal, and now it is green!

I tried heat, WD-40, gasoline, and Goo-Gone; in no particular order. I think that I wore off the clear coat on one panel, scrubbing so hard. When the weather warms, I'll revert back to my original plan, and paint the other fairings.

I wanted to ride today, so I put everything back together, regardless of the finish. You get the idea of where this is going.

Should I stick with the black exhaust, or revert to chrome?

Black exhaust all the way!

I'm thinking of welding up an under-tail exhaust to clean up the side-view.

I have seen it done on our pre-gens. It looked nice. I'll see if I can find the post.

That's pretty cool! I was thinking of doing 2-1 header for easier plumbing and more mid-range. Then stuffing single rectangular auto-style muffler inside tail section and using empty side brake-light spots for pipe exits. Shape pipes into squares to fit.

I think that I need to paint the calipers yellow as well... Especially the front one.

That sounds labor intensive, but would look cool in the end. Go for it!

I have been searching for a matching yellow - hoping to get lucky with nail polish, or touch up paint ( remember, I don't wan to spend big $$ on Color Right paint ). I found a cheap nail polish that looked promising, but when dry, was way off.

Anyway, even if I do get the Color Right paint, the sections where the decals were, are a lighter shade than the rest, so I need to paint it all no matter what.

A friend of mine suggested just painting it all, a readily available shade of yellow, instead of hunting down a random match. This seems like good advise, given the wild goose chace that I embarked upon.

So, I am REALLY living up to my screen name now, given that I had all of the spare fairings already, if I were to paint them.

At least it is back together, and I was able to ride twice in the last couple of weeks.

Check out auto-paint shops. A lot of them have colour-calibration camera system to make up for fade on factory paints. They aim camera at section of existing paint and computer spits out mix-codes to get you exact-match batch of paint. Can pretty much get you any colour you want!

Hmm. Good idea, if I can get to one during the week. I have yet to find a local one open on Saturdays.
