Cool, now go find you a smooth 08 or later r6. Flicks like a 250, keep the r's up like a 250 and doesn't feel like a tank. lol Get ya set of q3's and have some fun, when you are ready... pop on a set of fat man power cups and GOOOOOOOOO!!!!

If you really liked the duc's riding feel, try a gsxr too.

Hope to see ya'lls soon.

Hey @Bigballsofpaint, if you want to find out what a GSXR feels like, pay me a visit and take mine for a ride.

Every 600/750 GSXR since 2011 is identical to my bike. The earlier iteration (say, 2006-2010) were fairly similar.

All I ask is that you take responsibility for anything that happens... bring it back in the same shape it was in when you got it.

If you're REALLY curious, you can use it for a track day. Logistics would be involved for that.

But to be honest, what @csmith12 said is good advice IMHO. I LOVE my R6 on the track. You're welcome to sit on it and make vroom vroom noises if you like, to check the ergos.

If you sticking with team green, imho.. your coin is better spent on a well sorted 636 or zx10. It seemed to be the thing to do near the end of last season, try em out! Having turned my share of laps on the zx10, the stock map has the throttle feeling like crap when you know what it "should" feel like. imho, its the first mod to do aside of tires. The stock 636 wasn't as bad, but the bike I rode had all the aftermarket goodies on it.

How goes married life?

Ya I would like to pick up an 05 or 06 636 th ats sorted out, more than likely next year. We owe the gov 4g from pulling 401k money out when we bought our house so it's a tight year for us.

Married life is good, we got a new dog when my husky passed. Just plugging away at work and renovating my parents house for them to sell it next month. Going to NC for a long weekend in may. And I'll be converting the new trailer to a camper/bike hauler pretty soon. Can't complain!

What is this "car" thing of which you speak? Is that kind of like a real vehicle (bike) with training wheels or something?

PS I found a really cool video of the Helite vest on FB. I'll share it to your timeline. Will make the mrs feel good about the purchase.

Car: Device for towing trailer to get the bike to the track. Also necessary for getting to work, to make money to fund track days (see below).

Trailer: Device for carrying bike to track.

Gasoline: Fuel for track bike. Also useful for getting the bike to the track. Occasionally useful for getting to work to make money to fund track days.

Money: Funding for track days. Also useful for purchase and repair of track bike and associated gear. All other uses are secondary.

Food: Energy supply to keep a track rider focused.

Shelter: Protection for track bike. Other uses are secondary.

Palmer is running clockwise (reverse) this coming weekend.

To help prep, here's one of Ken Condon's excellent narrated videos of the track going in that direction...

Enjoy!!

Hey everyone,
Remember me? I signed up for both days at Palmer for Memorial day. I just managed to read thru this entire thread and wanted to add a little.

I am planning to return to Palmer on the 22&23 of July (I think those or the dates) and my friend Edward has tentatively agreed to attend as his first track date (hopefully first of many). Would be great if @Csmith, Kevin, @backinthesaddleagain, @Bigballsofpaint, and anyone else could make that date also to add support. I saw that Mr. Fist already plans to attend and @sireff will not be able to make the date (that's why their names were not included). I will be trying out slicks for the first time then also so should be really interesting--especially if it rains!

The bike and I are ready to start the crazyness all over again!

THE AMAZING MOVING SCHEDULE UPDATE POST for 2018

After 60 days you can't edit posts. So this post will be updated periodically and moved to the bottom of the thread.

Only showing independent track day organizations here. NYST also runs its own events, sometimes on the same day as a track day org. Visit http://www.nyst.com for their schedule.

Post up which days and what group you'll be riding in.

Red means confirmed, paid commitment
Blue means intent, yet to be confirmed

TTD/Razee as of December 23, 2017:

Heads up... Tony's pricing rewards advance planning. Membership is expensive compared to other organizations, but it gives you a hefty discount throughout the season. The membership pays for itself if you attend five days. It's always worked well for me; the tradeoff is the need to commit ahead of time to at least that many if you want it to pay off.

Tony has always offered pay-in-advance cash discounts. When you attend, bring cash in an unsealed envelope to pay for the next event. Same for memberships: way cheaper if you pay in cash for next year before the end of the season. Add up the pay-in-advance membership savings and grab the per-day cash discount throughout the season, and it pretty much pays for a whole track day at member rates.

Palmer, Thompson, NYST

REMLAP impressions - Palmer clockwise

Great weekend at Palmer, running it backwards for the first time. I had my frustrations due to uncooperative weather, but that's another story.

Consensus is to use the same turn numbers going backwards.

Overall: This direction has more of the lap climbing, which breeds confidence. I prefer NYST downtown too, for the same reason.

I like the flow this way. Fewer places where you have to make blind-faith commitments.

Straight: Just as with the normal direction the straight has a steep climb at the end of it, only this way it's more pronounced and noticeable. Very little if any braking needed; depends on your speed. On my 600 I bang two quick downshifts at the end of pit out where the track starts to climb, then a third before tipping in for the chicane. Tip-in is from the centerline or a bit to the right of it, and you're looking to straight-line the chicane as much as possible.

Chicane, Turns 13 and 12: This direction the chicane is easier to get right because you can see the second half. The other way it's blind. Clip the apex at the end of the curbing on the right and drive straight to the cone on the left at Turn 12. Placement makes a big difference here... the tighter your line is, the better. Turn 12 is where the track stops climbing.

Turn 11: The regular direction this is a super-late-apex decreasing radius carousel. A real neck-stretcher looking for the cone. This way it's the reverse... long, long increasing radius. Come in close as you flop over after Turn 12 and get on the gas not too hard, letting the bike orbit out to the center line as you look for the late apex cone. There's a bump in this turn about halfway around that you might find. Lots of lean angle here... look for your knee to touch. When you see the apex cone, go for it. Start standing the bike up and roll on the gas harder.

Turn 10: There's new curbing here. Great sight picture... as you spot the cone for 11 you can also see the cone for 10. Straight-line this as much as possible, hard on the gas. Let the bike come out to the right edge of the track for the blast down to 9, but leave room for people to pass. There's another bump right about at the apex of 10.

Turn 9: A lot of people over-slow coming into this turn. Coming off the straight from 10 brakes are in order, but not that hard because the turn climbs and will scrub speed. Enter right of center and bring it in ever-tighter as you go around to skim the apex cone. As with a number of turns on this track, you can't see the apex until you're already in the turn. This corner is very steeply cambered and climbing, and you can really feel it. Very confidence-inspiring and you can drive hard through it. Once you see the apex, look for the exit cone on the right, up the hill. Don't over-turn... a lot of people do so.

Turn 8: Very high speed right-hand kink. Coming out of 9 let the the bike go to the right, then come back to or just over the centerline to set up for 8. When you see the cone, go for it. Stay on the gas.

Turn 7: A number of lines through here. Consensus by the end of the weekend was that it's good as a double-apex, like the bridge turn at Thompson. The other place where you're highly likely to drag knee.

Enter left of center. You don't need to strafe the first apex that tight, but you are apexing there. Let the bike move out to the centerline partway through as you look for the second apex cone and strafe that one so you're over on the right for 6.

Avoid over-slowing for 7... people crashed here because they went in too slow and the super-steep hill killed their speed. With gravity favoring the rear, they tried to make up for it with aggressive throttle and lost the front. This is a place where you should carry speed even though it's scary. The hill WILL slow you down. Light braking before tip-in is all you need. Be careful with the throttle but definitely roll it on to drive up the hill.

Turn 6: There's new curbing here. You're cresting the hill and the corner is slightly blind. You should be over on the right coming out of 7. The picture you're looking for is the curbing and flag stand lining up. A second later you'll see the cone... go for it. Be aware that the right edge of the track is going to come up fast, but let your bike go wide to avoid losing momentum; a lot of people over-turn to get on the comfortable left side of the track. Stay on the gas up to the crest of the hill.

Turns 5 and 4 (esses): TTD puts cones out to funnel you to the left prior to 5. These corners are single-file, so don't get heroic. You're diving steeply here and looking directly at a rock wall on the way in so there's a real tendency to over-slow. A lot of riders just plain park it here. Yes you do brake but not that hard.

For Turn 5 keep it in tight to the curbing. A lot of people go too wide through 5, which means they make 4 a longer turn than it needs to be. You want to keep it over to the right so you can set Turn 4 up for quicker turn and a late apex. Maintenance throttle, with maybe a goose between the turns to help the bike transition.

Turn 4 looks super-narrow (it isn't) and it's a very steep downhill. The later you can apex this, the better, so you can stand the bike up and get on the power. The right edge of the track comes up very fast on the way out.

Turn 3: Fast right kink. Get on the power hard coming down the hill and clip the apex. You'll be on the right coming out of 4 and there's no need to sweep left.

Turn 2: Low point on the track. TTD puts cones up the left side starting from just before 2 up past pit-in. Coming out of 3, drift out all the way to the left edge (leave room for passers) and tip in just before the cones start. This is another spot where bike placement matters. If you're even a couple of feet too far to the right, you can't see the Turn 2 apex. If you get it right, you'll see the cone at the same moment you tip in. Get in tight there and drive up the hill hard.

Turn 1: Coming out of 2 you'll have a lot of cones to look at. There's a line going up on the left and as you go up the hill you'll see the cones marking pit-in on the right. There's also an single marker cone on the left at the crest of the hill. The visual impression is that the track is super-narrow. Have faith... drive for that exit cone, staying close to the pit-in cones.

This is the ultimate exit corner... quick turn and drive hard. Going up the hill as you pass the marker cone on the left, you'll see some extra pavement all the way over on the left edge of the track. Go there... it's where your tip-in point is. A lot of people are too far to the right here, and turn in too early. Tip in AT the X on the pavement or even a bit after. Find a reference point in the woods ahead to cue you. You're looking to get as close to the wall on the right as you dare.

Immediately after tipping in you'll see the apex cone, which is sitting on top of the wall on your right. The front straight will also open up before you. On the left are the braking markers for the normal direction... aim for the second-to-last one, which is where the "straight" has a bit of an apex. You've got a hill to help you here, so take advantage of it. Grab an short-shift up as you drive down and accelerate hard. Stay in the middle of the straight to allow for people to pass as you head back up to the chicane.

A real teachable moment from Memorial Day regarding passing and pit-out procedures. First you should know that the rule on pit-out is to stay out of the racing line until up to speed, which typically happens after the first corner or two.

@ttd also has a golden passing rule: Rider in front owns the corner from tip-in to apex. It's a good rule and keeps people safe.

But sometimes the reality of a situation conflicts with that rule. Pitting out at Palmer going backwards is one such. The first three turns (14, 13, 12) are a chicane that follow a steep uphill, which means that taking the racing line after the first corner is too soon. They want you to wait to merge until through the right-hand Turn 12.

I didn't fully get that message. I thought it was stay right through the first turn and go.

Here's what happened. Both riders played a part here... I took the racing line too soon, and the rider passing me assumed that he could make an inside pass when he could have waited a few seconds.

Yikes!!!

imho...

TTD's golden rule trumps your pace/line selection here.

Sure, you were a bit off pace to be on the race line, but that is no excuse for the rider behind you sneaking up the inside. This is a case where a lack of a bit more patience ups risk factor.

Seems you were off the apex a bit too. Allowing a judgement call by the following rider that he could fit. Even with that, the following rider breaks a few of my rules of track day riding;

Last second decisions on motorcycles at high speed are normally bad decisions
It is not a race, "just enough to fit through" has no place at a track day (many orgs have a 6ft bubble rule for their less than race pace groups)
He made the pass after your tip in
Always assume the rider ahead of you just off the apex will tighten their line, especially if off pace

A clean and safe pass is 99.9% of the time judged by the rider being overtaken, not the rider doing the overtaking.

EDIT: iirc... there is plenty of room for you get to up to pace on your r6. That corner were you slow up just after hot pit is crazy fast, I drug knee there at 100+mph. So yea, your call of being off pace when entering the line is spot on. Getting up to pace safely is up to YOU good sir. And now you have experienced why I ride new/reversed tracks in a slower group than my normal. To get comfortable with the line vs trail by fire.

I may have a slightly different opinion here. I've never ridden this track but from the video I would say that waiting until the following right hand turn would be safer and perhaps more appropriate to join the racing line. There is a huge grey area when you say things like "up to pace" because up to pace means different speeds for different riders and bikes. Up to pace can be several mph slower for one rider than another and if someone is already barreling along on the race line when a slower rider (not up to HIS pace) joins in without shoulder checking, this exact situation could arise.

From what I see in the video, because the next turn is a right hand turn, I would have stayed on that outside line until apexing the second turn and merging into the race line, OR shoulder checking to make certain no one was approaching before trying for the apex of the left hander. Glad no one was hurt.....

I could see that @Misti, blending at turn 12 has both pros and cons imho. I would bet it would be the preferred merge point in a CSS setting, where riders of all skill levels are out on track at the same time. In this case, riders of a specific group are expected to be within an acceptable pace of each other. Mr. Fist was riding off pace, but within acceptable visibility of the rider behind to make a safer pass or no pass at all. It also makes sense that TTD put the merge point in at 12 because in the event of a mishap, the speeds will be down considerably and with better run off.

The faster the pace of the group out on track, the more I dislike the turn 12 merge. Mainly because the blend line and the race line would come together in a blind spot, at high speed and in a chicane. It looks like fast riders will need nearly edge to edge use of the track to make their intended line.

Tough call for the track org indeed.

@ttd Did you tell your blue/red groups anything special in regards to blending here?

I failed to elaborate that we wanted people to blend in the long right turn. Fortunately, some of my staff remembered.

In a perfect pit out, you stay about 5 feet off the right edge of the track on the approach.

Take the first right turn real tight, but instead of going across the track to the left apex, you stay about mid track.

You enter the long right turn on the normal line, and then bring your speed up (if your tires are warm).

If they are not warm, I take the long right turn kind of tight and let people go around me.

Hey Andy, in an attempt to always do a new track every year, any interest in NJMP with TPM?

Going to try and do either NYST or Palmer reverse with TTD as well though.

I pretty much have my season planned out... nine days all told.

But there's always the possibility that I could be convinced. What date?

Nyst 6/24-25?

Still plenty of space available. 55 riders total as of right now, counting all groups.

3 of these signed up for Monday only (52 riders on Sunday)
11 are Sunday only (only 44 riders TOTAL Monday!)

Few bikes = LOTS of clear track. TTD needs to get decent attendance at this one or it'll fall off the schedule again for next year.

Anyone else going?

If you do, heads up that the gates close at 10 pm and you can't get in after that. Heard some recommendations on another forum to park at the Walmart in Oneonta if you have to... open 24/7 for facilities, supplies and suchlike.

I plan on arriving Saturday night and grabbing a spot along the upper roadway near the building if possible.

Going to Maine for vacation but want to do the august dates unless TTD cancels them.

Not having the guy on the S1000RR/H2 around cuts down on near misses also

STUNNING drone footage of New York Safety Track, shot by @ttd instructor Tim Di Lorenzo. Lone rider on the track, lines are pretty much what's recommended by the staff. I think this was a red group rider.

Enjoy!!!

FYI I paid for next year's membership last weekend. The advance, cash-only price this year is $440. Regular price is now $540.

A membership gets you $100 off each track day, so with the cash discount it starts paying off with your fifth day. It also gives you a discount on tires from MTAG Pirelli, the trackside tire vendor.

Tony also changed up the raffle structure. Previously, he'd hold drawings twice a year. Prizes included free track days, free memberships and the grand prize, riding free for the entire following year.

This time he's doing a drawing at every event. Two tickets are drawn, with both prizes being a free track day. One of those is only for someone who had signed up for that same weekend. The big prizes (membership and free ride all year) are drawn at the end of the year.

Buy tickets at the start of the season, and you're in every drawing all year long... so lots of chances. I'm liking it.

If it does rain it'll be my fault. I have the rain curse this year. Crappy, changeable weather for every single day I've been out save one.

Usual approach applies. As the day approaches, if it looks like the weather isn't going to cooperate I'll rent a garage both days.

You need to blame me for all your "WET" track days if it does not rain this trip! Had I done all the other days with you as I had originally planned, you would have been dry! I am looking into getting the Garage for this weekend right now and will text you once I have it locked down. Cant wait to get out on the track again.
