Genuine Buddy 170 i
So my van died after 570000 miles. I ride my Scarabeo 50 but the tires are near impossible to find. And I need to ride on a 50 mph highway. I put my race bike on the street. But there is no way I'm risking it in freezing conditions. So when this used buddy 170 came in on trade last week I had to jump. I was kinda looking for a van. But when you pay 1500 dollars for a twenty year old van. You know what comes next. New tires, the trans leaks what ever. So I am now on two wheels all the time. Winter in Iowa is going to be a test. The 170i is fuel injected and goes 60 mph with ease and it has lots of storage.

Nice ride. With your technical know-how, I'm surprised that you don't tackle car problems with the same ferocity that you use to overcome ninja speed record problems.
Anyways -- nice bike.

I know better than to repair the engine that has 570000 miles on it . The van had a bad rest axle also and the seats and dash where shot. The wiring was coming apart . Rust was coming out of everything. The plastic around the climate control box was turning to powder. The final thing was the head gasket was blown . Oil and water mixed in the crankcase . So over heating and brown milkshake. I had to run 50 weight oil or the oil pressure would drop at idle and the engine knocked. While driving it started shaking and suddenl lost power. I only paid 1100 dollars for the van. I did. It want to replace the engine.
I will get a new van when I figure out what the ECTA is going to do about the race track. In the mean time I'll rent.

Sorry to be legal for racing it has to have 15 inch wheels. ( one of the points that made me want it.) I can't control myself

I know the feeling. I recently retired my 1973 Dodge B200 van that my father bought new right about the time I got my license. Same kind of reasons... body rust, frame rust, worn out suspensions parts, bad bearing in differential, etc.. I've been through a lot with that van, and it was sad giving up on it, but I had rebuilt the engine a few years ago, so I transplanted its 360 into my '84 B150 that had an ailing 318. Now the B150 runs a ton better than it ever did with the 318.
I hope you make it though the winter OK and stay warm! |

I plan to stay warm. Gotta get the gloves working. I want to upgrade the tires for snow. And a rear rack would be useful. I love riding it everywhere. First tank of gas was an honest 90 mpg. That is great. Now I can play and try to get 100mpg.

I ride old motorcycles with limited 12v current capacity, so no heated gear for me. I found that hand guards, like used on offroad bikes, when combined with good winter gloves, really help keep my hands warm. I got a pair from Acerbis that mount only in the handlebar ends. They're very rugged, yet go on and off very easily.

There is a lot of plastic around the bars and no place to really secure hand guards. I might look into the kind of softbguards like mittens that go around the bars and controls. But it has been OK so far.
I am really liking this little beast. It is great having underseat storage. Just toss small packages into the trunk and go. Plus I can carry a roll up knapsack in there. The tires are a little small and slip in rain. But lower pressure should help that. The ride is really good even in pouring rain. It is easy to maneuver and is a blast to ride. 60 mph is about the top speed. But it scoots off the line and will easily keep up with normal traffic. I am averaging 80-90 mpg and gon 400 miles so far. Really different than a motorcycle. It it a real utilitarian piece. And the king of urban life. Park anyplace, cheap to operate and very inconspicuous. Going ten mph over the speed limit and cops don't even give it a second glance.

You'll have to cut them to go around the mirrors, but these should work nice.

I am still rocking my little Buddy. I try to ride my motorcycles as often as I can . The race bike is now street legal so I ride it for tuning purposes. The orange cafe racer I use to go out on weekend rides to local watering holes. The biker guys always give it a long look.
But day in day out I need the hauling capacity to get groceries and stuff. I upgraded the suspension, tires and exhaust. Now it handles like a demon and is a blast to ride. Top speed with a wicked tailwind was over 80 mph.

People often overlook scooters, twist-n-go, tons of underseat storage, decent fuel econ.
I've been commuting on my 05 Burgman 650 for nearly two years, cost me under $2k, $30 to insure annually, plenty of wind protection for sub-freezing temp, cruises at 80 mph easily. |

Thanks, Scooterbusa, Goldwing scoot, is what I use for long distance on highways, between Philly & NYC.. or need to carry mass amount of food to the homeless shelter twice a week.
During the week my commute involves mostly my 83 yellow Honda C70 Cub, $15 to insure annually, leave the key in and still no one try to steal it in Brooklyn: |

(WARNJNG THREAD JACK)
https://thewest.com.au/news/goldfiel...d-ng-ya-260979 There is a 200 mph club for all the big bikes. A couple friends and myself are trying to get a 200 kph club together. You need to go 125 mph on a 250cc four stroke or a 125cc two stroke. Or smaller to get into the “club”. Sofar there are about one member . Need to get more than one to have a club. I am at 123 and going to give it a try soon. This guy would definitely be a welcome member.

I ride my scooter more than my motorcycle . It is super fun and goes fast. Carries a rain coat ,food ,bottles of tea or water. It just gets the job done. It can hang with an motorcycle up to 60 mph. And if the speed limits is 45 like most back roads in Iowa are. Then it is perfectly suited for a nice ride. I still love my motorcycle. But the scooter is easy. I think that is the thing. You just sit on it and go. Plus it can haul a case of
Soda 25 lb bag of dog food . Six pack of beer four blue bags of groceries. All at the same time.

You guys have sparked my attention... after 37k miles on the ninja 250.. and then a wicked wreck and a parts bike and another 15k miles on the new/old bike... maybe a new horse in the stable is the answer.
Something about two-stroke exhaust really excites me. The big question is where/how I can import one of these little buggers and still make it street legal. Over 50cc requires a plate and registration here in Hawaii. Where there's a will, there's a way. Atleast, that's what I tell myself.

This is a four stroke 170cc bike with fuel injection. I do have an aftermarket muffler. The sound is not like a two stroke. More like a one cylinder Ferrari. Biggest problem is college girls chasing me down the street.

Depending on your need for speed among traffic flow and distance you need to travel.
Most gas powered scooter that can keep up with traffic flow do require a license place and insurance.. and gas can't be cheap in paradise. You're probably better off getting something electric, with pedal back-up when the battery juice runs out. Plenty of solar power avail. in paradise, no? |
