You'll be in my neck of the woods. Let me know how it goes. I'm hoping to get out to that road in the Miata one of these days. Or a bicycle.
If you're ever in the neighborhood on a dual sport, be sure to go down one road on the BRP and ride Curtis Creek road. It's a good curvy gravel road that's fun on a bicycle. Also, if you're that close, I think Mt Mitchell is ~20 miles south on the BRP from NC-80. If you head north, I've heard NC-226 is fun, but I've also not gotten there yet (I live on the south side of AVL). Depending on how far south you go (Asheville is about an hour of freeway south from where you'll be, hit up 276 and 215 on both sides of the parkway, 151, Town Mountain Road (694), and Elk Mountain Scenic Highway. A more realistic option for you... buck creek gap (80) south should dump you onto 70 in Black mountain, take 70 over to old fort, and then take bat cave road (I think it's called) down to 9, then continue down to the Chimney Rock/Lake Lure area on 74. There's plenty of great driving/riding roads that direction. You can take 9 back north to Black Mountain, where you'll find 40 and can head either to AVL for some tourist stuff, or back to the highway to head home. |

i made it home. i either got some bad gas or something is amiss on carbs. i stripped it down at a truck stop and checked all the basics. a motorcyclists went to the part store and got me some seafoam. it ran much better after I did this. It got me to Columbia in a soon as I had to back off throttle it started hesitating again. I topped off the gas tank and added the rest of the seafoam. made it from columbia to north augusta, as soon as i come off mains it hestitates badly. I nursed at home. So I started at 4:30 this morning and got home at 5:35 PM

Darn, too bad about mishaps! Do you remember which gas-station you gas from just before stumbling issues?
Definitely a fun route! |

been thinking about this alot. it started to lose partial throttle even before i got gas. i hit some nasty potholes on backroads in south carolina. maybe something was there and it jared it loose. hopefully i will find answer when i pull carbs. i do use gas treatment but the seafoam obviously made a difference and got me home. quite strange. would a malfunctioning gas cap cause this?

final ride notes
i try to plan all my long rides. well mother nature bit me this time. it was quite cold in the mountains and overall the whole trip. all my fingertips feel sore and burnt like feeling. even with barkbuster hand deflectors and wintergloves, the cold showed no mercy on my hands/fingers. i planned waypoints for gas but some of the stations where nowhere to be found. cell service was spotty. i run tmobile but i notice us cellar would pop up in small towns. (tmobile must have a partnership with them). the whip was a great road with lots of turns and switchbacks. i crossed under blue ridge parkway and saw mighty mt. mitchell (highest peak east of the mississippi/6684 ft.)on my left side.
cautions: sand was being deposited on corners from runoff of hills/mountains. this made cornering a challenge. gravel on road from peeps driveways. hwy nc197 south of pensacola: rode turned into gravel/dirt. i was having as major freakout that i had taken a wrong turn. after 5 miles pavement returned! the breakdown/bike issue was a challenge. thanx to brian from alaska who rides a victory kingpin for helping out! here is nc 197 yup, ears were a poppin final route if you ride in alot of areas with no cell service or you hike. this might be your savior

Oh yeah, lots of roads through the forest out here like to randomly turn into gravel. Always fun surprise on a sporty vehicle.
