IBA Memorial Ride - Oct 25 2014
There really isn't much to this report. I need to work on the video as I didn't take any still pictures.
The Memorial Ride was set up to honor fallen riders, friends, and family who've left this world for better places. It's a chance to think and reflect on their lives and how they've impacted your life. I opted to do a fairly straightforward ride, a simple Saddlesore - made a bit unique by being fully in state. The plan was just ride out 80 to I-5, north to the very last gas station I could find before entering Oregon, then turn around down as far south as I needed to go, before back up north and home via Truckee. The trip down I-80 was calm, the stars bright overhead, and traffic light at 5am. Entering Sacramento, the clouds started to build, and the rain gave a preview just afterwards.watched the sun rise around 7, and enjoyed cruising north through the hills of the valley. The rain returned as I started climbing up towards Shasta and was full on monsoon mode going over the mountain. Dropped back down into the valley and the sun came out to create a brillant double rainbow over a landscape I could only describe as what Ireland must look like. Quick fill up and turned around to enter the rain - where I found my helmet stopped venting. The visor and my glasses fogged up severely, and I pulled over before I created a deadly situation for me. Got the fog wiped off somewhat and back on the road. A terrible headwind continued to slow me down as I made my way towards Lodi, where I encountered a huge accident that stopped traffic cold. I filtered up to the front (along with a dozen or so other bikes) and waited while the helicopter took out one of the patients and the ambulance left with another. Onward down towards Firebaugh, and the phone calls came in regarding the snow over the passes. A quick conference with my Dad built a new route to avoid returning over Donner and gaining the miles needed with a finish at Placerville. Straightforward ride, plenty of time to think and reflect, and another successful return home.

Sweet ride, indeed. Very clean and descriptive report.
Do you have any pictures of your bike during the trip?

During this trip? No, sorry, only took still shots of the dash at the end to show the mileage and time.
For this ride, my bike had nothing special on it except my Hippo hands style handlebar covers. Everything else was the same as any other ride I do. There may be a shot from this ride caught on the video camera that I can check for. Here's from last weekend, just missing the mitts

I have ATV Logic brand. Picked up at a local Polaris dealer for around aboutish $20
http://www.amazon.com/Logic-HandGuar.../dp/B004GQYPV4 In a thick downpour that lasted *hours*, the interior did get soaked. However, not sure if it was due to the rain coming through the mitt or it running down my arms straight into the opening. Here's a pic from when I first got them October last year.

Right on. Next year I'll be swinging through more of California's roads. We should meet up at some point. If the Tahoe area isn't too far for you, maybe we can hook up for one of my Sierra Adventure rides with other Ninjetters.

@NevadaWolf - Teri, I like the "Hippo Hands" like ATV enclosures that you have. I can definitely see where they would be great in cold weather and the rain and allow you to ride in summer gloves all year long (in theory I guess). How do they perform when your hands aren't inside them (like shaking out a cramp or whatever)? Do they collapse or stay open? I would worry about removing my hand, the opening closing, a panic situation occurring and not being able to get my hand back in to the bar. Did you ever experience that?
Gregg

I still wear my winter gloves underneath as the air still cools off inside, just not as bad as the wind chill hitting me.
When my hand is inside, the wind pushes the back of the mitts against my brake lever, causing the brake light to flash. It never applies the brakes, just enough pressure to trip the switch for the light. Heard having handguards helps hold the mitt in place, though I wonder if using the lever guards racers have would work. It did take some practice and still now an occastional glance to line my hand up to put it back in smoothly, but in regular riding I haven't had a problem. I did have a problem when exiting a street towards a traffic light. I had removed my hand to close the visor and the light changed. I couldn't get my hand back in so just grabbed the top of the mitt where my clutch lever was and just squeezed everything. No finesse, but it worked and I was able to straighten it out later to put my hand back in. As you can see in the pic, mine narrow some when just on their own. I've seen some with stiffer openings that may hold their shape better, or maybe something could be inserted to keep the opening wide when empty (like a coat hanger loop or something similar).

I was surfing around and found your IBA thread. Your video's and pictures no longer show but I did find the YouTube link. Catching the rainbow was a nice touch. The Donner Pass video this weekend looked like a fun ride. I bought my little Ninja to do an extreme IBA ride. Looks like your doing everything right, having fun on motorbikes.

Yeah, Google hosed embedded images when they killed off Picasa and direct linking to pictures. I’m glad you found the YouTube link.
I put most (all?) of my long rides up here and on YouTube so you should be able to find lots of stories if you need anything. I had a blast doing those rides on the Ninja - though I did find my butt wasn’t tough enough for the stock seat after 11 days when I did my big cross country ride. Best of luck on your BBG! It took me several attempts cause I don’t handle cold well, but eventually I got it. And it’s such a great feeling rolling into that last gas stop!

I really got into the IBA rides. It's been 1 year 3 months since my last. It was an extreme ride although it was easy for me.
I did an "In-City Insanity SS 1000". 1050 some odd miles in less than 24 hours and never left Oklahoma City. 18 laps around Okc. I can see my house from I-35 so I was able to stop and eat, let the dog out..... I accomplished the Saddle Sore 4 seasons award. An SS ride on each day of the start of the new season. The winter one is real hard to do. Shortest day of the year. I also did the SS Gold Solar Eclipse ride. Was your cross country trip an IBA ride? I'll check out your YouTube channel some more. Here's all the pins from my rides. |

Under my signature is the achievement "From sea to shining sea!" That's a link to the ride report for my cross country adventure. The pics are broken but the maps and videos still show for me. If the link doesn't work here is the direct url: https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187469
And yes, it was for a 50CC (with a nested SS2K) from west to east and then a US Route 50 from east to west. I think my favorites are the Heaven to Hell ride and the US 50 one. Both felt like something few had done in an already niche group. Though the SS1K when I rolled over to 100,000 miles on the Ninja was pretty sweet too. Here's my map. I didn't put up all my pins, just unique ones.

You should be in the "Not Right Riders-Truly Hardcore Riders!"
Your Memorial Ride would qualify for it I'm sure. Here I thought if I do a BBG on my Ninja I'm accomplishing something. Your ride is bad a**. I like the way your displaying your pins with the map. |

A BBG on a Ninja *is* accomplishing something. That's a tough ride anyway but us team 250 ding dongs have to take it a step further and really make it challenging. Thanks, though, that was definitely a fun ride. Met a bunch of amazing people and saw a lot of awesome places. HA! Just checked the Ride List. If I'm reading it right, you and I were 2 of 3 folks who did a Winter Solstice ride in 2015. Has Mike written anything fun on your certs? I finally got the "cup of coffee" comment when my odometer zero'd out "[her] tiny 250cc Kawasaki rolled over 100,000 miles at the end of this ride - an extreme mileage on an engine with pistons smaller than a cup of coffee"
