Lost with chain and sprockets
So I recently purchased a 2005 ninja 250 after getting rid of my harley fxst back in January. I've been reading forums for a couple weeks now and researching. But I'm lost.
I bought the bike it had tons of slack in the chain I tightened it up. It loosened back up right away and it had tight spots while spinning so now I have replaced chain ordered front and rear sprockets made by JT. Went with 15 front 45 rear. Well once I got them on I noticed the front sprocket has play in it and will slide on the shaft about 1 mm each way is this normal? it's making a clicking sound while spinning the rear wheel by hand. I cant seem to get it aligned or something I'm lost and need help. I'm tired measuring from swingarm bolts but exhaust interfears. Need help please!!!!!!! |

Yeah, 1mm of lateral-play is semi OK. The sprocket-plate with two bolts may be worn-out or damaged and not sitting in groove of output-shaft tightly. inspect output-shaft's groove to make sure it's not damaged and allowing lateral-play. Groove should have sharp 90-degree edges and corners.
Clicking sound may be worn wheel-bearings. If so, nothing you do with axle-adjusters and chain-tension will fix wobbling and out-of-tension chain. Need to fix wheel bearings first. Then you can align chain & set tension using this procedure. It's being done on new-gen, but will work on pre-gen just fine.

Thank you so much for the response. I don't have any play in the rear wheel and no wobble just a clicking sound but it's coming from the front sprocket, I was thinking maybe put a sprocket spacer to fix the play and see if that fixes the sound if not I will pull off the rear wheel and inspect the bearing farther but I was lost when I had it off last time and the whole hub comes out with no bolts holding it. Is that normal?

Yes, sprocket holder is separated from hub by rubber cush drive pieces. Make sure spacer in between is in place.
Take chain off and inspect front sprocket closely. Remove sprocket and look at groove in output shaft. Insert sprocket-plate into groove, there should be very little play. Either your output shaft is damaged, sprocket plate is damaged or both. |

There is not play with sprocket off and retaining clip put on. What does this leave left. The rubber is in good condition behind the hub and the spacer is in there. I'm lost

If fixing-plate fits onto output shaft groove snuggly, then play must be from sprocket. Look at plate’s teeth, they should rotate into groove on end of output shaft snugly. Either bolts have worn threads and don’t hold tightly or sprocket itself has worn threads.
Verify following procedure: 1. Slide sprocket onto output-shaft past groove at end 2. Slide fixing-plate over groove 3. Rotate fixing-plate about 10-degrees in groove so bolt-holes line up with sprocket 4. Tighten 2x bolts to hold sprocket to fixing-plate. |

Unless 1mm lateral play you found was chain sliding laterally on sprocket teeth?
