Mindfulness meditation
Mindfulness meditation has been all the rage in recent years and has promises of less stress and increased focus and attention span (which are important skills when riding a motorbike). I find it helps me maintain my attention when things like cold and fatigue distract me from my ride. That said, it's not an adequate substitute for taking a break and warming up when need be. Just a nice additional tool.
Do you meditate? How often? Does it help with your riding? |

I enjoy meditating, but it's hard for me to get into a habit of doing it. Mainly due to the fact that it can be very difficult for me to get my mind to stop going so fast. Once I do get it calmed down and start to get in the zone, I'm ready to move after what seems like forever but it's only been around 15 minutes total.

Yes, very important to achieve calm and restfulness. Very useful to combine with NLP-style imagery just before race. I visualize race beforehand, the tenseness and anticipation while lined up waiting for starter's green-flag... tick... tock... tick... tock...
<BANG!!!> and we're off, feeling tank popping up and hitting me in chest... feathering rear-brake slightly to bring it down... Imagine flying towards turn-1 at warp-speed, how can 250 go so fast!!!... almost no room left before having to slam on brakes... elbowing guy on left... then on right.... found hole on outside! yeah! I play through all possible scenarios in my head. Rewind video... repeat with slight variation, rewind... turn in little later on turn 14... rewind... pass guy on outside ... rewind... try it on inside.... got him!!! Then when things happen on-track, it doesn't catch me by surprise... I've already done in thousands of time already... |

I have tried meditating several times but I can never slow down and quiet my mind. When I try listen to a pre recorded meditation session I wind up falling asleep so I’m either busy busy mind or past out. I can never get that in between state “in the zone”. I would like to get there so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I do sometimes when I remember. I'm not sure if it helps my riding, but it definitely gives me a minute of calm which is probably a good thing.

I don't use books or apps. It's basically about finding somewhere relatively quiet where you can get comfortable. doesn't matter if you are sitting or laying down, as long as you are comfortable. close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing, listening to and feeling the inhale and the exhale. Any sounds you hear, acknowledge them and let them go, thoughts that come into your mind, acknowledge them and let them go. Keep concentrating on your breathing, and as one online yoga teacher often says, "let the brain be soft." relax your face and mind. It works, it's just hard for me to stay still for too long.

Not really into mediation as I find it to be "burning daylight". My day is too damn busy to be sitting around doing nothing. Instead the secret to a better life is to just get good sleep. Wake up refreshed and attack the day.
That said, I envy people who have an easier going schedule that would allow for meditation time.

I don't meditate per se, but I do find a certain calm, after a few activities, and it helps me continue through, other areas of stress.
The gym was my biggest factor in stress relief. I LOVED it. I never hit the gym in my life, until I was 39. A light weight skinny boy. Lifting really chilled me out, and helped me filter my thought process. Due to life, and shift of priorities, I havent been in almost 5 years. Lol, I was up to 210 lbs aaaaand im back down to 130 ( my high school weight again :/ ) Camping in woods during the fall/winter, without technology around also helps reset me for a bit. |

I was in the same boat and was only ever able to get into it after I stopped drinking so damn much caffiene and stopped smoking cigarettes. Don't forget phisiological factors. It's not just about place and time.

I am so on/off with both of those. Quitting the caffiene is easy for me ( other than that first day or two of painful withdrawl) the Nicotine is much harder for me. Not painful, but I am often told to pick up smoking again, cause of how much I become an anger monger, when I quit cold turkey. Within a a few weeks, up to about 3 months, I start back up.

I find gardening is useful for calmness, being intentional. Sometimes, i go down to cellar and chop up random scrap-metal and weld them. Very soothing.

Smoke some or get some edibles ... that helps me; ooooh maybe try cod oil or lava root extract; I like weed better but lava roots works when I can’t have weed and wanna chill without being high
