Unusual carb question
I purchased a set of carbs through eBay supposedly from a 2007 GPX250. I notice, that unlike the carbs that came with my bike that both slides do not go all the way up to the top of the carb bore but stop approx 5/16” down. I have attached a picture. What is going on here? I am wondering if the carbs are fitted with the wrong slides? Or was this the way it was in some year models?

Assembly error/s under the top cap? Wrong return springs, too long, coils binding early, preventing full rise? Additional parts added in error? Slides should rise higher than pictured.
Check pertinent components versus your originals. PS all slides/diaphragms/return springs listed as identical '88 and up.

Hi Ducatiman,
I have attached a photo. I think the top caps may be from a different set of carbs. The inside centre of the top cap on the new carbs I purchased has a protrusion cast into the cap which prevents the slide going all the way up. The top cap of my original carb doesn’t have this. The only other thought is that for some reason the carbs have been deliberately restricted during manufacture? The old cap is on the left and the new cap with the protrusion is on the right. Clearly visible is a wear Mark in the plastic where the slide has been bumping it. Thanks for your reply Garry

at first look i'd concur wrong caps. let me confirm after inspecting newgen 250 and ex500 carbs in my possession.
a partsbook search shows 16005-1056 top cap used 88-12 all 250 CVK30 16005-1056 used on CVK34 ex500's, some vulcans and some 4 cyl applications a comparo to 500 is called for. give me an hour or so. Need to try the 500 cap on a 250 body and confirm visual to your photo.

500 cap is same ribbed style, though 34mm carb body larger so that is not whats on there
your originals are obviously correct....your Ebay source has mixed stuff. A sure warning to be careful on inner tuning components too...Ebay carbs always a crapshoot never know what lies deep within. I don't know exactly what your ribbed cap is from, perhaps common to zx600/6R which used a CVK30 variant, suffice to say it doesn't belong on your 250.

Yes. Thanks for your confirmation. Fortunately the diaphragms are identical to the originals and in perfect condition so I will still end up with a useable set. Your advice is much appreciated.

so you need a set of correct caps and you'll have a set to swap in as backups.

I have a spare set of caps Gordon. Parts for these bikes are fortunately very cheap here in Australia for some reason and I tend to buy whatever comes up on eBay that may be of use. Am expecting another set of carbs to turn up from eBay this week that I paid $45 AUD for (half that nearly in USD) inc postage.
Cheers Garry

Very interesting? Perhaps I have a set made up from various year models. They were advertised as “all years”. I have never seen a set from anything later than mid 90s before. Be interested to see what you find once the ones you are working are assembled Gordon?

these newgen ribbed tops def correct, allowing full slide motion all the way
16005-1056 is def ribbed top 16005-1055 is flat top, I believe each is listed as being used in 250R '88-'12 slides only 1 part # also '88-'12 I'm thinking an online parts book year listing error here somehow. Still researching.........but either of these caps SHOULD work in any gen carbset I'll be examining as I see more 250 carbs cross my path. @59096 your caps must be from another CVK30 model application.

Also I think different regions of world got model changes at different times. Many catalogues show pre-gen model as starting in '87. But in U.S. it started in '88

Hmm! If the flat top and rib top caps both fitted the same carb body and the slides were the same part number all the way through the only answer can be that I have the wrong slides?

Evidently there are various tops used, I never checked part #'s against 600's
Your rib top and mine may, in fact, be different. Pics of both 250 rib and flat. Both of these are allowing full slide travel. I'll get you a measured height of a slide too for comparison purposes. Ya never know.

Yes, the rib on yours is much lower. The rib on mine is about 5/16” thick. You are probably correct that my caps are off something else.
