So How 'Bout that COVID-19?

Things around here are a little odd. Nursing homes are on edge, essentially in lock-down (difficult to visit relatives). Light traffic. No parking places at Costco yesterday, but big grocery store was almost people-free. Just kind of weird...

Waiting for the other shoe drop (if it does).

How's things in your part of the world?

Not really much of a big deal around here. Work did send out an email offering double time to any volunteers willing to go in and sanitize businesses for commercial customers that want it. Apparently some have been calling and asking about it even though my state hasn't had any confirmed cases yet.

people round here hitting Costco for cases of water and trying to resell for profit on craigslist. Mean while nothing has stopped girl scout cookies from being sold.

There's cruise-ship held offshore in S.F. bay. They're not letting anyone off until everyone's been tested. This must be what Europe felt like in middle-ages when ships with plague-infested rats were unloading. Of course they didn't known that the thumpers' eradication of "witches" and their cats would lead to the Black Death that would kill 1/2 of Europe's population. I hope we're not overlooking something that simple this time...

we have two cases in my city, not a big city. i am taking common sense precautions for now. i am a realist, and not prone to falling into the hysteria the media often stirs up about things such as this. for now, i figure not to eat any food that was not prepared by me, at home. limiting my interaction with large crowds and things a lot of people may have touched. i have a concert next week i really want to see. prolly still go, take my chances. maybe the whiskey will kill it haha

i think they should not have let people back into the states or leave the infected areas where the virus was known. not until we knew more, or the virus had run its course. that sort of practice is just begging for a virus to spread..

A lot of panic-shopping happening. I've been avoiding stores when possible (we don't need much). We have one guy quarantined at the local Navy base.

Not worried myself. I'm healthy, don't get sick often.

Why bottled water? We're not preparing for an earthquake or a flood.

Do people think the water utilities will shut down? I don't understand.

Here in Cali, there's hoity-toity attitude from in-crowd that drinking tap-water is somehow beneath them. Although there's been plenty of studies showing that bottled-water has higher likelihood and tendency to carry more bacteria than tap-water...

With the whole green movement, I would think they would all carry reusable water bottles that have been filled up with filtered tap water. I'm not even green and that's what I do. Zero Water pitcher and a bpa free washable bottle.

More concerned about MotoGP races getting canceled at COTA.

Our stores aren't out of bottled water or anything. Literally nobody seems to care about coronavirus around here, it's business as usual, even at the restaurants. Went out to dinner Friday night and our favorite restaurant was a 2 hour wait for a table. The bar waiting area was packed standing room only and nobody had a face mask on.

So 19 of 21 infected people on cruise-ship are crew-members!!!! That makes matter worse as their higher contact-rate with people can spread infections much, much faster! On my way back from Hong Kong in Jan., none of crew on plane were wearing protective gear or used gloves! And even then, it appears you can still get infected!

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...virus-n1149986

To top it off, security officials inspecting evacuated Americans at Travis Air Force Base and March Air Reserve Base weren't wearing protective gear as well. Long 14-day incubation period means all these people could be spreading virus before showing any signs of infection!!!

The Apocalypse is coming, repent your sins!!!

I think it's part of some political agenda. Noticed thaat China had backed off some of their retaliatory tariffs in response to ours... Hmm... what's next? Some magical cure to help Trump save the day and get re-elected?

Prettywife and daughter went to a movie Friday afternoon: 4 viewers, including them.

Much lighter turnout at my local tavern this last week: no more hand shaking.

Took a friend to a local upscale restaurant (Anthony's Home Port) at 6PM last night, no reservations: immediate seating, three quarters empty.

Ohio has extended spring break for some schools. Some are going to online only. Arnold sports Festival in cbus was limited to athletes only (cancelled Expo and spectators). Complete panic has set in.

Local grocery was out of rice and bottled water. And shelf-stable milk. Panic-shopping in full run. Weird. Didn't look for TP.

One of the things from psychology is that people will buy odd things out of the Need To Do Something. It may be irrational and unhelpful, but action is better than inaction. Apparently.

Lemmings have cleared out local Costcos.

Chinatown in S.F. is completely empty. This is high noon couple days ago when I went looking for dim sum lunch. Looks like one of those post-apocalypse movies. But the apocalypse hasn’t even happened yet!

Usually Chinatown is beyond crowded, elbow-to-elbow on sidewalks and I have to shove little old geezer ladies and their shopping carts into street so I have enough room to walk! Always teeming full of tourists. Speaking of tourists, they’re all locked up at dock.

Someone stole a case of John Wayne style toilet paper from my job. That stuff can give you a paper cut, they must be desperate. Meanwhile, I plowed my garden plot yesterday, along with a four foot strip by the sidewalk the length of half my property to plant sunflowers and wildflowers as soon as the danger of frost is over.

Went to do my weekly grocery shopping this morning. I figured I would go as soon as the store opened so I wouldn't have to fight hoards of panicked crazy people. The cleaning supplies with bleach and stuff like Lysol were almost picked bare. I managed to grab one of the last Soft Scrub with bleach since I need it for my side cleans. Toilet paper and paper towels were totally empty. However, food of all kinds filled every shelf. Aside from rice, bulk rice was empty. Nothing else.

Moral of the story - people are hunkering down, surrounding themselves with toilet paper, paper towels, bleach/lysol products, and.....bulk rice

So I wrote this a week ago. My how things have changed. Our schools have closed. Toilet paper is gold. The ramen noodles section was cleaned out.

What disturbs me now is that I didn't participate in the panic buying of toilet paper, and now my family is going to run out. We're going to be wiping our asses with old washrags because of some stupid sheep mentality bastards.

Meanwhile, I have lots of pancake mix and oatmeal.

All casinos in Ohio will close tonight. Our gym is considering addind a few more kids classes during the week to give parents a break and wear out the kids.

It's been a fun week or two, and I think it's going to get progressively more interesting over the next week or two. I was notified that I could have been exposed at a conference, so was able to work from home from the notification time through the potential incubation period. Kids school is shut down for weeks, work has gone to a 100% remote strategy, and essentially everything in the community is shut down or shutting down.

Our county is getting hit very hard here in California already, with almost 100 cases and several deaths, so it's also now the county that is generally the first to announce things like "no groups over 250", which became "no groups over 100", and a day later became "no groups over 35". Healthcare is so far completely fine - but they can do the same math everyone else can, and are expecting the challenges growing in Seattle to be similar here as soon as a few days out.

It's human nature to be skeptical of well, anything - and overall that generally serves us well. If the opposite extreme was that we believed everything we heard without question - I'd bet that overall our lives and our communities would be much worse off. But we also can't let that skepticism remove some of the abilities that we all now have to help make a dent in what is now officially labelled a pandemic. The specific reasons that some countries have been able to both slow the spread and have lower mortality rates for this are already known - there's no mystery. Many of these changes, especially implemented so quickly, are likely to cause significant upheaval here in the U.S., just like they have in every western country so far.

Like many of you, especially if you're near a location that seems to be front-loaded with this, I've come across many, many, sources of news and information about what's happening and what we should think about it. I hesitate to share much here, but I'll make an exception for this video.

(Please be wary of any links you may receive from any untrusted sources during this outbreak, phishing and malicious sites have also gone way up during this event, as people do have their guard down and might be more susceptible to various bad actors. The link above goes to an embedded video on LinkedIn, you can mouse over it to confirm.)

Here in Louisiana everyone was very nonchalant about the whole thing. Then we had one then 3, then it just kept doubling! They have traced the origins and guess where it spread from????...........................

It's just a bad real-life remake of a movie plot.

Is life imitating art or is art imitating life?

Life imitating bad movies apparently. CDC just sent CA test kits for COVID-19. Whole 150 of them. How many people live here? How many have already been diagnosed? I know governmental agencies can be bubbling idiotic bureaucracies, but only Hollywood screenwriters can come up with something this stooopid...

Just remember, motorcycling with all the gear on will prevent you from getting it.
1 - you are more than 6 ft apart
2 - full face helmets will prevent spread of droplets (ever sneeze in your helmet, it stays on the visor)
3 - leather gloves prevent you from touching gas pumps with bare hands (don't remove gloves with teeth)
4 - twisty fast roads - out run it!

Disclaimer - I made all of this up, there is no data. Test at your own risk. Ride safe and ride often to enjoy life more.

CA governor ordered all bars to close. Boo!

Looking at completely wrong areas. What about buses, ferries, or trains/subways? Sanitation has never been very good on those to begin with.
