K&N Filter or Pod
K&N KA-2508 or R-0990?
Advantages and disadvantages? I know I could grab the pod for about 25-50% less, but does this price come with disadvantages? My bike is already disassembled, so removing the air box would not be a problem. I have a stock exhaust and stock needles. Eventually will get an aftermarket exhaust, but not for a while. |

The pod will let the most air in. (like having nothing on there basically)
Rejet and needle shim will be required no matter what going to pod. Expect to need a jet kit designed for a pod filter. Otherwise you won't get above 5-8k. lol "Ask me how I know" I used the factory pro 3.0 jet kit as per kkim's link. IMO, the stock airbox is a PITA and the K&N r-0990 looks sweet with no runners while being easier to work on. I dunno which has a better performance though.

Thanks for your response, but after jetting and adding the pod will I notice a difference using the stock exhaust?

You will notice a major difference. Like night and day. Best $130 you'll put into it, but plan on a full exh system to get good flow and no melted honeycombs.
You'll probably need $10-$20 in vacuum fittings and caps etc to plug off some lines too.

Alright thanks! I'll bump this mod up in priority, I was going to change to SS brake lines first but this will be on top of the list. Keeping an eye on Yoshimura Full exhaust, but I have only heard it on youtube... I have yet to hear any of the aftermarket exhausts up close.

you'll lose some low end power if you remove the airbox, but it will breathe better at higher revs. you will notice a difference even if you keep the stock exhaust.
I would recommend keeping the airbox for now and get the panel replacement filter, unless you're planning on getting a full exhaust in the near future. FYI, removing the airbox is a royal PITA. |

If you have to ask keep the airbox. Re-jetting for pod filters is a PITA. Pod filters are noisy. Getting the airbox out is a PITA.
On the plus side pod filters can make a little more power (if jetted correctly). Removing the carbs to change jets is much easier without the airbox.
