IMHO, real-world (as opposed to Walter Mitty WSBK wannabe) reasons to get a 1000:
- More torque, which is more useful than gobs of horsepower on the street - Unavailability of an equivalent smaller bike (I really, really want a BMW S1000RR, but only because they don't make a version with a smaller engine) Reasons NOT to get a 1000 (all covered already) - Costlier in several different respects - Heavier - Way, way more horsepower than you can possibly use on public roads... so what's the point? I love my twofiddy, but my next bike may well be a supersport. I was looking at the GSXR600 because it fits me, but lately I've been leaning in the direction of the 750 because it's the same physical size, only weighs five pounds more and delivers more torque. I was also looking at the SV650SF because it's probably a better real-world bike, but it's so friggin' frumpy. It's got all the right attributes, but looking at it doesn't get me particularly excited. |

I think the original naked SV650 became the Gladius. If you're looking for a more humane SV650S, I think that's it. It seems the looks are very polarizing as all my friends who own SV650's hate the new look.

The 09 up R1's dont have a big bang motor. The cross plane crank gives it an uneven firing order. Much like the irregular in this pic:

Well technically its a long bang engine, you can't really have a big bang as they can't idle at less that 5,000 rpm without stalling (ever see the idle speed of a M1 motogp bike), unless your the 2011 zx10 which is going to be a hybrid, the electric motor will keep the bike idling at normal speeds, it will also allow some other screamer engine characteristics at lower speeds, and big bang characteristics at higher speeds of so the magazine article tells me. But that article is based on patents filed by Kawasaki

I think the current zx10 is enough for me. My wife practically gave me the green flag on this. We just need to talk about it more. Right now the 09 zx10 is most likely the bike. We shall see if it is still there when I decide to get up and pick one up.

I honestly don't care the color, I really like the look of the bike. I like the CBR1000 too, not to mention the ducati's.
I just have to stick with the big 4 to keep parts cheap. ![]() My list is in this order... 1. ZX10 2. CBR1000 3. GSXR1000 4. R1 Any of them would be sweet. ![]() I told my wife I was looking into the sportbikes, and she said "blah". LOL Once she starts riding with me (which she won't ever do) then she can have a say in what I get. ![]() She likes the "look" of cruisers more.

ZX10 is a nice bike. To be perfectly honest, that would be my pick as well (Honda's are stupid expensive up here).
Now...regarding the wife....bring home flowers with the bike ![]() |

Nah. She almost gave me permission, but I definitely have to wait until she gets back home from business next week. I prefer having her there this time. I brought the 250 home without permission, without her knowing. This time I want her to be there to see my excitement. lol

Lot's of great info in this thread, one item to also consider is comfort... I currently ride a ZX14, way more comfy than my old CBR929, more of a powerful and comfy sport-tourer. I'm not a track guy so being able to do 200-250 mile days is required. I love the liter bikes but don't find em comfy any more, maybe cause I'm 36 and stack up the miles more and more these days than when I used to just hit the back roads and put 20 miles on in a day. I would try to spend some time in the dealerships sitting on the bikes finding what is comfortable for you based on your needs. Of course I also steal my wifes 250 A LOT to go riding, and it's very comfy... LOVE IT!!

I sat on a CBR600 and it is super comfortable. The GSXR1000 doesn't feel bad either. The Kawi, in Roadracing World, was rated as very comfortable. So I'm not too worried.

They sold off the zx10 I was looking at. Have a 07 gsxr1000 for 8k. Two new cbr100's. Not sure about one, but a repsol edition is 13.5k. I'll have to think about this.

8k for an 07 seems a lot to me....3 years old already, almost 4 years old since 11's should start coming out in a few months. I guess it's 3k off the msrp already, just seems high.
I wouldn't pay more then 7.5k out the door for a bike that old. If you look around long enough you can probably find a used 1000 with under 2000 miles for 5-7k in perfect condition.

The supersport 1000s aren't that much heavier than the 600s. My friends 09 zx10 felt nearly identical to my zx6 (before the stock exhaust was removed). The 09/10 zx6s are much lighter than my 08, so you will feel a noticeable difference. But, I guess I'm saying all of this to say that weight isn't really that much of an issue. The 1000s are slightly taller and bigger in the chest. But again, I think the difference is negligible.
As far as supersports go, I can't ever see myself getting anything other than another 600. They are just plain fun to ride. You shift gears just like the 250, which I LOVE. If you like high revs, you can't go wrong with a 6. They aren't very torquish, but the top end is enough for the road and track. But again, if you love the revs... ![]() |

I like high rev's, but ONLY when I want to push it. That is why I've been wanting a 1k.
I really didn't want to spend over 10k for a new SS. Hopefully something nice will come up and I can jump on that. Heck, maybe the dealer could transfer a 10 in. I'll see later on.

I can get my hands on a 600 for cheap, but it just isn't what I am looking for. I want a bike where I don't want anything else. Where I don't feel like I'm pushing it non-stop just to get it going. I know a 600 is night and day to a 250, but I want a 1000 because I want a bike I fully respect and will own for years and years to come. If worse comes to worse, a CBR600RR will most likely be the replacement for the 250. I think I'd get along with that fine. But I'm patient, I'll wait. ![]()

Just glancing on craigslist for the hell of it I came across this...
http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/mcy/1749895287.html Granted, different places, so prices are 100% comparable. But thats a new 2008 zx10r that still has the 1 year factory warranty for 7000. Try maybe finding some more of those and showing your dealer...maybe they will drop the price?

Now I think I have her hooked on the 250! She has started riding it and loves it, though I'll need to get some ergonomic bars for it to truly be hers. Now back to drooling over the white 848 (hopefully) in my future some where. |

![]() Riding around on a 750 has taught me a few things about myself. For one thing....I like being lazy and rolling off from some ridiculously low rpm and having the torque required to get the tach moving at a decent pace. The other thing is that revving the snot out of an SS impresses high school girls at bus stops ![]() A liter bike can definitely scoot around at low rpms no problem....I'm not sure what kind of high revving you'll be doing without getting into insane speeds, though. Unless of course you go riding around on the freeway in 1st gear....but that's just crazy talk. (Or is it? ![]() Failing that, I say you hold out for a ZX10....those things are bitchin' and seem to be going for a steal of a price down there. |

My buddy has the Repsol 1k, SWEET bike! It's compact for a 1000, feels like a 600 and more narrow than the R1. Either way you go with a modern 1k is win-win.

Just to cover my bases, I did find another dealer that has several ZX10's for about 8k. So if my wife wants me to spend less, I'll chase after those. Otherwise I'm chasing after the Repsol CBR1K.

So would I be stupid to pass up a ZX10 for under 9k? I like the CBR a lot, but they are asking over 12 for it.

Personally I'd take the Kawi without thinking twice.
I'm a huge honda fan, and that Repsol is beautiful, however 3k is a nice chunk of change. You can do a LOT to the ZX to make it your own and still not touch 3k. You could even get a custom paint job if that's your thing. Also, is it under 9k out the door and over 12k OTD? Or do you still need to add tax + others. If so, the dealer fee, title, etc hould be the same, or very close....but tax could be a big chunk too. For me, tax is 6%, and down the road in Miami it's 7%. If theres a 3500 difference between the two bikes, that's also an additional 200-250 in tax, brinking the gao between the two closer to 4k. I'm not sure how taxes are in Texas though.

Well to put it into perspective, $3 grand is enough to buy a used 08+ 250 in good condition. You could get an entire motorcycle for the price difference. Of course, that is also a good chunk of change to mod it out. So, if it were my money, I would go with the ZX-10, but I have been a Kawasaki fan for a long time, and it's fitting that my first bike ended up being a Kawi. That and the fact that I would then have 2 Kawasaki bikes.
Nothing wrong with the Honda though, and reviewers seem to love the bike other than the fact that it lacks "character", but "character" is defined differently by everyone so YMMV. I should also note that my experience with these bikes is limited to sitting on them and listening to friends' opinions of their older versions of these bikes, a CBR 954 and a ZX-9R. |
