Mirrored Visors?
Are mirrored visors any different than regular tinted visors? Or is the difference just the cool factor of being mirrored?

Coolness factor only I believe. They may reflect more sunlight but the temperature in your helmet gets no cooler than the outside temperature.

I've got a blue one on my icon helmet - just the cool factor, and it does act as a tint, somewhat, nothing like the smoke or dark smoke though

Hows the maintenance on these visors? I heard it's a PITA to keep it from smudging or to keep the 'iridium' coating from chipping and rubbing off.

no smudging or rubbing off, but eventually the gf handled the helmet and chipped the coating... so long as you're not smacking your helmet into things, it didn't give me any issues, I was actually surprised at how well it did hold up. I will be trying a HJC one when I get around to it

My mirrored visor for my bell apex helmet is holding up fairly well. If you hit a few bugs and try to wipe them off they will smudge (more than a clear visor) and possibly mess up your vision, I haven't had any problems after I stopped trying to wipe the bugs off with my hand though.
*Edit You definitely want to bring a clear visor with you at all times, there is very poor visibility at night. I forgot a clear visor once and rode home at dusk, had to ride with the visor open when it got completely dark. Ill never forget that again... |

Better than smoked, but I can't recommend them as they do make things darker, but when I was a kid & had the chicken pox, it attacked the iris of my eyes(I forget the proper term for this) making everything really bright... I have to wear sunglasses when other people say "the suns not even out" and because of this, I can almost ride around at night with my smoked visor here in toronto with all of our street lights

Really depends on what brand you've got... from my own experience Icon & HJC are easy ones... I hate the design scorpion uses though. for my HJC helmet, I can do it with 2 fingers (1 on each side) and it literally just pops off

The Shoei RF-1100 and Bell Star are easy too. Arai RX7 is OK after you watch a video about it.

I had a mirrored visor for my Fulmer helmet. Changing them out was real quick.
The mirrored part was actually on the inside of the visor. So bugs, etc, had no effect on the mirroring. Now my Icon, I just have a standard tinted visor on it. |

I bought a new Suomy lid and want a tacky Gold mirror visor to go with my tacky lid haha.
But ya the visor changing system on the Vandals are stupid as a piece of the helmet has to come off and makes things akward when you have to change your visor on the road. I've fumbled around with HJC's mechanism on my cousin's helmet and I'm not too enamoured with their system either. Shark FTW Last futzed with by Flashmonkey; August 31st, 2010 at 10:41 AM. I love my mirrored visors, however, there's always the extra trouble of packing a clear visor along if there is ANY chance of riding after sunset. In the summer, I don't worry about it since it's after 9pm before it gets dark, however, in the fall as the days wane, I bring along my clear shield in case we find ourselves out on the bikes after sunset. I sometimes have trouble changing out the faceshields. They are a PITA to change out, but once you get the hang of it, it can be done quickly and easily as proven by my hubby. Females who have any kind of length to their fingernails can have more difficulty changing them out.

AHhh I never thought about long fingernails, but one other thing that just came to mind, Rain, when it starts raining, and you're wearing a tinted visor, your visibility goes down drastically

I have an HJC mirrored visor and I use it at night. I dont have any problems seeing with mine, however, I ride on the highway through Kansas City on my way to work. Its lit up pretty good especially with all the road construction.
Mine is starting to chip a little bit. I wax my visor everytime I wax my bike and that helps with the bugs, they come off pretty easy as well as the rain and dew. |

Doubtful. Some (most?) jackets have a pocket on the inside that curves around the rider's side and allows for a spare visor to be stowed fairly easily, right up against one side of the wearer's ribcage. My Joe Rocket jacket had one, I used to carry my clear shield in it all the time, and barely noticed it was there.

LOLOL Is she serious? Hun, it'l fit approximately 3 dvd cases. That's about it. (you actually made me laugh there), some jackets have a pocket in the side where you can hide a visor, I wonder if they have some sort of attachment you can get so you can use a different jacket...

I used to have a problem with reflection inside the helmet when I had a tinted visor on an HJC. I could see these really big eyes starring back at me when the sun was lower on the horizon. Turns out they were my own eyes.... It was the last time I've had one of those, and will never again. Now it's all about the dark smoke and carrying a clear visor in the tank bag. I'm never sure if I'm going to be out past dark anymore.... The dark smoke on the HJC's is plenty dark for me, and I don't need sunglasses with them, and I carry some baby wipes in the tank bag as well to polish up the visor when it gets too dirty.... They're also useful for all kinds of other things... Oh, and I've found it's quite easy to change out the HJC visors. I can even do it while wearing the helmet, with a new-ish visor. On a side note, I've found the notches on the HJC helmet wear out quite quickly, and make opening and closing it a bit of a chore....

In terms of tint (from light to dark), clear, chrome mirror, light smoke and then dark smoke. I was recommended to use the motopro polish on helmets and it worked well on all my visors except the mirror.
All scratched up I got the mirror visor in order to put a camera in my helmet to make videos. People wouldn't be able to see the cameras unless they came real close. |

Ok, mirrored visors are cool and some of you wear them at night. Reason I asked my original question is that Cycle Gear is selling Scorpion shields for $19.99. Thought I might pick up a mirrored one. I have a clear, dark smoke, and a photo-chromatic shields.
Now, anyone have experience with yellow visors for night riding?

I had just a thought, I've got an small HJC helmet too as a spare passenger helmet, I think I'll start carrying it on the rear of the bike just so I can swap the visor out with it

Just take the extra visor man, no use in exposing the helmet if it doesn't need to be...
