Troubles from too lean?
Hi all, I just recently bought my 250 and had a couple questions.
The guy I bought it from had a Yoshi slip on installed and said he removed a snorkel, but did not tune it with a jet kit. From reading these forums, I know that these bikes are already pretty lean, is it possible that with those modifications the bike is running even more lean? Could there have been any damage to the valves as a result? I know the valve adjustment is coming up at 7500 miles, but I was curious if anything could have happened in 4-5000 miles he had bike set up this way. Thanks all! |

Did he shim the needles that you know of? I dont think a slip on and no snorkel would cause a large problem, but I would wait till someone who has more knowlage with tat on here answers your qestion.

I read about someone here who didn't do his 7,500 miles valve check, was running too lean, and ruined his motor (valves "mushroomed") around 10,000 miles. I haven't modified mine in any way, but because they told me that all my valves were "in spec" at my last service ~8,600 miles, I'm really worried because I can't afford one and I'm now over 17,000 miles.
If anything, I think it's running rich because the exhaust has been really smelly since my last valve service. |

Shimming will get the job done. But rejetting is always better too. Many threads on how to do both things.
About that other post, he had a full exhaust I belive, and he didnt do the valve check. The valves could have been way off which coud have been the main reason of the motor failing. Poor maintenance will distroy any motor. I dont think your set up will make it run much leaner.

Thanks Scotty, I read the threads on shimming and jetting, I will do one or the other once I take it out again in the spring.
I rode it maybe 50 miles and it felt fine the entire time, hopefully it isn't lean to the extent that it causes damage . |
