HID Conversion
OK...I'll connfess...so far I've been talked thru 3 simples mods by you guys and the bike still runs...better.... so...I'm ready to tackle the HID conversion we have in DIY section.
But... a few of the mfg's advise low beam only converts...and then proceed to say why in somewhat convincing terms / I'm a noob mechanic so I'm convinced very easily. Anybody have any feelings on converting 1 light rather than 2 ? |

Most of the time, people recommend against converting the high beam because the hid ballast requires some seconds before getting up to full brightness. In the ninjette, if u convert both to hids they'll both be on at the same time and that would negate any high beam. Also, you will need to adjust the headlights so they're aimed properly to not blind oncoming traffic.

just buy a car kit w/ two sets of lights and do both high and low beams.
be sure to adjust your headlight aiming after you're done. |

Oh god I really hope you're not just gonna cram some hid bulbs into the existing halogen reflector housing......

if you buy or make a relay harness for the ballasts you won't have any problems converting both hi and lo beams. I got the DDM harness with my kit, and after a small mod (they use one relay for both beams, and I needed it separated into 2 relays) it draws the current for the ballasts directly from the battery, and uses the stock wiring to operate the coils on the relays.

G21-30'S excellent DIY shows the Lightning industries kit...so not wanting to argue with success and seeing that the DIY deals with that specific brand I'd get that one. But....cant seem to google up lightning industries for HID kits....or does it matter.
I suppose the real question is which kit to buy. There are lots of them available and i'd rather depend on the experience of ninjette.org than the manufacturers claims. Recommendations pleeeze. |

A prob with internet suppliers is that they tend to disappear and the ones with the most money to spend tend to come up first regardless of what they sell. Rcoket lights, HID Geeks, Xenon Depot...saw $60 kits...saw $300 kits. One site even sold a 250r kit and buried in the fine print was that the ballast was too big for "most sport bikes". A big part of which to buy is recommendation....as noob mech...the LAST thing i wanna do is have to replace a faulty kit.

I put both the high and low on my bike (I admit I just stuffed a pair of h7s in my existing light and love it) the process wasnt nearly as hard as you think. I didnt even take the covers off to do it, my hand looked like that guy from "the Usual Suspects" after but not to hard. I used a set from Amazon, 45 bucks for the pair and for almost a year later they still working great.

I have DDM tuning HIDs on my bike, 35W, 6000k. They are inexpensive and have a life time warranty. Haven't been bothered by cops with them... made sure they were adjusted to the right height and I don't ride with my high beams on.

I have the exact same set up as GeneJunkie and the hardest part of the install was removing all the fairings and putting them back on afterward. It is pretty much plug and play with one small bit of modding for the spacers that hold the bulbs in place, otherwise it is very straight forward. As stated above, just make sure to adjust the light pattern when you are done.
The HIDs are very noticeably brighter than the incandescent bulbs. They provide an extremely large gain in visibility for relatively low cost.

+1 on the DDM kit. I've got the 55w 5000k, and when you're out in the country with the highs on and you have to turn them off for a car it's like turning the lights off in a room with no windows. Lo beams are really very good as well, only get flashed when I'm riding 2up since the rear end squats down a bit.

The nice thing about the DDM tuning kits is that they are plug n play, and the ballasts are slim. DYI for installation http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11413 NattyGirl has a post specifically on the DDM kit http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showp...&postcount=322 |

Thanks Gene, I was thinking 6k to get that nice bluish tint but still keep the light usable.

I'd say 6k on a 35w ballast would get a nice blue tint, but if you go to the 55w ballasts it tends to wash some of the colour out and you may need to go with a higher colour temp depending on what you want. I went with 5000k bulbs (55w) and it's bright white, the only time it's blue is when it's warming up, and that lasts about 20-30 seconds.

I know I've posted before about using the DDM relay harness kit with my HID's which I think is a really good idea, but twice now I've had issues with the fuse holder in the harness not making good contact with the fuse. The first time it was daylight and not a big deal, I went home and after an hour or so of troubleshooting I had it sorted out. Tonight was a different story, thankfully I was only about 50ft from my driveway when they went out again, in pitch black darkness. immediately checked that fuse and I can now get them to fire if I wiggle the fuse, but they won't stay running. if anyone gets that harness, go to your local electronic component/auto parts store and pick up a heavy duty (preferably weatherproof) fuse holder and a 20A fuse and swap it out. That's exactly what I plan to do tomorrow.

I thought these were plug and play?
Also your 55w kit may be the problem with extra load through that fuse.

I don't understand why you would want the 55W bulbs anyways, the 35W are retarded bright.
I've had mine for a year with no issues and that includes riding in the rain. |

you need the kit. you cant just buy the bulb and plug it in. in the kit there is a ballast, that module kicks up the voltage so the bulbs can illuminate....

You will need H7 HIDs. I ordered just regular ones off ebay. But you will also need H7 Spacers. I had to grind the spacer down on the edges to fit into the ninja housing but works perfect! Just finished the install today.

i would say just go with a digital ballast setup as they are smaller and easier to mount in the fairings.
