Tight gear and riding ergos
Kayso...
Right at the end of last season I changed a bunch of stuff around, gear- and accessory-wise. Found a sweet deal on a perfed leather jacket at Cycle Gear, installed clip-ons and rearset adapter plates (not real rearsets), etc. I bought the jacket after parking the bike for the winter, so I haven't had a chance to actually try it. I believe that tight gear is safer because it won't shift around if you go down, so I made sure the jacket is on the snug side. I also wear a Velocity back protector, which has a big, wide Velcro belly band. With the crappy weather FINALLY breaking here in the Northeast, this morning I rode to work for the first time with all this gear on, and I noticed something really interesting.... ... it makes the aggressive riding position caused by the clip-ons and rearsets remarkably comfortable. The tight jacket and the - um - "girdle" from the back protector do darned good job of supporting my torso and make it easier to keep the weight off my hands. I do feel a bit like a trussed turkey off the bike, but when "assuming the position" it feels very snug and comforting. Anyone else ever noticed this? |

Hehe yeah....I mean if you look at gear designed for "sport bike" riders, you'll notice that there are a lot of weird design features built into them: longer than normal sleeves, tight chest, loose back, turned out elbows...all of which feel funny and uncomfortable when you try it on in the store....but once you assume the position it all clicks.
I have no experience with this, but I"m pretty sure track suits are the same way. |
