Electrical accessory question
http://www.kawiforums.com/showthread.php?t=123644
I used this DYI to put a 12v cigarette plug on my bike today. It runs my little air compressor just fine but when I put a usb adapter in it the fuse blew. Also, my phone car charger won't work in it. What do I have to do / change to be able to use a usb adapter and phone charger? Any help is appreciated. |

How many amps is the fuse rated for? I'm finding it strange that the electric motor on the air compressor didn't blow it, but a USB adapter did. The USB chargers are typically just a few hundred MA, much less than just about any fuse. I think there has been a wiring mixup somewhere, or the particular cigarette lighter you used is defective.
I prefer the powerlet/bmw type sockets for motorcycle use, though some have had good results with marine-quality cigarette lighters as well.

I may have my wires reversed. Just read a post on another site where the guy had the same issue. Air compressor worked fine but phone charger didn't. Quick switch-a-roo on the wires and everthing worked fine. The fuse on the usb adapter blew, not the 15a inline fuse going to the outlet.

^ Thats what I was just thinking, reversed wires. Electronic stuff has a diode in there to blow the fuse for protection.
Good ya figured it out |

Up until 2007 I was an ET1(SS), served on the USS Charlotte (SSN-766), and at SSEP Pearl Harbor. Now I'm a WO1 in the Army learning how to fly helicopters. Man I miss Navy PT, the Army actually takes fitness seriously.

I'm a couple hours North of you, I'm stationed at Ft. Rucker and I live in Enterprise. Yeah, we had a couple guys that would nearly give a hatch closed indication as they climbed through. I always liked the theory (generally held by fixed wing pilots) that says helicopters are such ugly machines that the earth simply repels them. |

Just got done switching my wires and there is no power going to the plug now. I guess I'll switch them back this weekend and just be thankful my air compressor will work. I really wanted a power outlet for my phone and mp3 because a buddy of mine with an 07 250 and I are planning on doing a saddle sore 1000 really soon. If any of you electrical savy guys have any ideas let me know.

If so return your wiring to its original configuration (when the compressor worked) because the wiring was probably fine. The first few times I read through this thread I thought you had inline fuse problems. 2) How much power does your USB adapter output? It should say in tiny print somewhere near the FCC information on the device. I ask because I have an iPhone. I can charge my iPhone through its USB cable by plugging its USB cable into a portable USB adapter installed in a cigarette socket, but that only works with certain USB adapters. The reason is many portable adapters only output .5 Amps, but the iPhone demands a solid 1 Amp. Some portable USB adapters claim they output 1 Amp but they don't do it well enough to power my iPhone so it still wont charge. It sounds like your USB adapter is just too small for the devices your using. 3) Have you tried the USB adapter in another vehicle yet? If not please try it and let us know if it works. |

The usb adapter I'm trying to use is a scosche brand. Stamped on the side of the unit it reads, Input:12-24VDC,0.5A Output:5V,1A. The fuse that came with it and the pack I had to get to replace it read, 2A 250V. Now the fuse in the usb unit blew just by plugging it into the bike and car. Should I be using a smaller amperage fuse from the battery to the cigarette plug? Maybe the 15a fuse is letting too much juice go through?

Fuses are simply protection devices that melt before more expensive items break or cause fire. The ratings determine at what point they melt in the event of a short circuit, if a device requires 5A normal operation and suddenly tries to draw a lot more amperage then something is wrong so the fuse associated melts hopefully before something else does. Fuses don't restrict current flow in the manner you may be thinking in that post and the 15A fuse you installed between the battery and the accessory socket should be a good size.
If the USB adapter blew its internal fuse in both vehicles, as soon as you plugged it in with no accessories plugged into the adapter, it is probably damaged or defective so you probably need to replace or repair the USB adapter. |

Still got an issue....I re-wired my set up to my original configuration. My air compressor works in the cig. plug. The first usb adapter I had was defective. The fuse would blow on both car and bike. I picked up two more usb adapters and they both worked in the car but not on the bike. My phone charger also won't work on the bike. The inline fuse on the air compressor is 10 amp and like I said, works great. So I'm thinking that the cig. plug is pulling less than 10 amps but more than the 2 amps on the usb fuses. Anyone have a clue?

Do you have a meter?
Air compressor will run no matter what polarity you use on it. On the other usb thing, you probably fried the diode by hooking it backwards(then its a short either way you hook it up). < I have picked up lots of good stereos & radios people thought were broke....... clip the diode and good to go. Meter need a meter What color wires are on it???? |

Hey Kerry I bought a meter the other day to check what part of the cig plug was hot. I had it wired right the first time. As far as the usb, the fuse blows as soon as I plug it in (with nothing plugged into it). I took one apart and nothing seemed burned so i replaced the fuse and it worked in the car I'm thinking I need to add a resistor or something into the usb to drop the amps done a notch or maybe put a bigger fuse into the usb adapter.

Kerry, I owe you a beer. If you had not suggested getting a meter I would have been done. It is now as it should have been.
A few things conspired to work against me through this: 1) Not having a multi meter, 2) being electrically inept. I did have it wired bass-ackward and that was causing the usb adapter to fail. When I switched leads the first time I must not have made a good connection on one of the wires because nothing worked in the outlet. The second re-re-wire was also wrong. I was messing with the meter checking voltage and noticed the wall of the cig plug was hot. I believe Kerry said the center was supposed to be 12v so I made the switch again and presto! Thanks to all for help/suggestions. Quote:
