My ninjette's in jail.
I got my ninjette impounded today. I was being stupid, and had just gotten off work at 7am and wanted to go home and sleep. Well long story short, I had gone 70 in a 40 and a BMW motorcycle cop pulls me over, and I didnt have my insurance card on me, etc. Well, needless to say, i'm on the market for a new bike.

What did he fill out the ticket for? Speeding + the insurance issue?

U should have said "but sir, its only a 250, I don't think it can even go that fast; your radar must have had a glitch" . I can't afford to act stupid but occasionaly I still do. If I get a ticket I'm done for.

Well, it's on a 30 day impound, plus the pick up fee of 100. I paid 600 for my ninjette, so I don't know.

HAHAHA it DID cross my mind, but he seemed a little serious. Although he did laugh a little when he asked me if I had any reasons for going 70 in a 40 and I replied "not any good ones"

so, is that it?... you're just gonna leave it there and that will be the end of that? don't they flag your DMV info so you can't relicence in the future unless you address the matter?

in california the 30 day impound is no joke. my friend got one on his camaro and they charge you for every single day plus a pick up fee to get your vehicle back. my friend only paid 1200 for the car and the fees came out to something around 1600. if bikes are the same it might be worth leaving it. I bought both of my 2nd gen 250s for less than $1000 and they both had less than 600 miles on them...

In all honesty I probably will get it out, I'm just speaking out of frustration. Im mad at myself for not really thinking. But hey, things happen. Funny part of the story though, I'm waiting at a light in the right left turn lane, look behind me and see nothing, then from the corner of my eye i see a white fender pull up to my left, I was thinking "no, no, no, please no." Sure enough, he looks at me with this intense glare and says something, but I can't hear him because I have my headphones on, I give him the wait a second finger, then he looks really mad. So I pause my music and say "excuse me?" At that point he says "PULL IT OVER!" So I do and he speaks into his speaker, even though hes right behind/next to me, "Turn the bike off, get off and sit on the curb!" Cut to me walking home...great morning.

I think it might even reflect on my credit, although i'm not sure. Maybe some other CA riders can shed some light on the issue. But yeah, I think I will get her out, but i'm going to be much farther into her money-wise than I originally had intended.

This sucks big time. Even worse is that you were betrayed by a fellow biker. I'm assuming that the lack of insurance is why it was impounded. If you had insurance, but didn't have the card with you, maybe you can visit a judge and get him to release the bike from impound. |

The 30 day impoundment thing sounds like nothing short of organized theft. In FL, they will impound if the car doesn't have insurance, but the owner gets it back as soon as he can show proof. Usually that takes a couple of hours to get home and print an insurance card from an insurance website. For bikes, we don't have to have helmets or insurance. I have both, but its nice to know I don't have to. CA sounds like a really horrible place to live. |

I wouldn't be so sure about that. You didn't say exactly which beamer they had, but I looked up the specs on the BMW R1200C and its almost identical to the pregen Ninja 250. So a liter sport bike would leave it in the dust. Even a Ninja 600 would leave them behind.

Yeah, thread title would be "I'm in jail" instead of "My ninjette's in jail". You'd also have been posting in tech section about best all-purpose lubes.

I thought CA and TX had electronic insurance databases now where they can automatically check through VIN? Or does it only apply to cars?

They wouldnt be using a BMW R1200C which is a cruiser....they normally use the BMW R1200RT...which would completely smoke a 250, and even put up a real good fight, perhaps completely smoke a CBR600RR.
109HP, and 89ft.lbs. of torque. It aint no joke. |

If you leave the bike they sell it and if you owe 1000 and the bike sells for 500 you have to pay the difference

Yeah, don't leave it at the lot. They will continue to charge you after the 30 days. The 30 days is the waiting period before you get to retrieve it. They will send a collections agency to collect on you AND it will negatively impact your credit score. All in all, unless you're unemployed and are about to go homeless, it's best to pay the fines and get it out. A court date won't likely be set before you get to plead with a judge to release it early.

So, a LEO running traffic enforcement stops a rider doing 30 over with no insurance (no proof is hte same as not having it) and he's a Nazi? I think you need to reevaluate your world view.
To the OP - you can easily leave the bike in impound and walk away. BUT. 30 days after the original 30 days impound, your bike will be put up for auction. At that time, you will owe the yard the tow fee plus 60 (or more) days impound storage fees. Whatever they sell the bike for gets deducted from that total, but you're still on the hook for the leftover amount. |

I'm not a beamer expert, but it looks like the RT is definitely going to beat a Ninja 250R in both top speed and 0-60. Looks like a nice bike except for the being a cruiser thing. Yep...I figure that even if I had a dual sport and was riding out in the country, if a cop started flashing their lights I would have two options...
1. Go offroad and cut across to the next road, outrunning the cop. 2. Pull over. I'd definitely pull over...it doesn't really matter what you do if the cop has your license plate number. |

Heck, why does ANY state require insurance for a bike? Its not like you are going to leave that big of dent in the SUV that suddenly pulls in front of you. Florida at least got that one right. |

Guys get away all the time, but some don't. I definitely wouldn't try it with a 250. But I'm sure I could get into a lot more trouble with a ZX-10R. |
