expressway on ramp metering lights
everytime i have waited at these lights, the sensor doesn't seem to pickup my bike. so about 2-3 cars in the other lanes will get the green lights before my light even goes green. so lately, i've just decided to do a rolling stop thru these.
do you guys wait for the light to change or do you just run them? |

I think it may be written in the law books that motorcycles can ease out on an intersection where the traffic light does not change for them.

I typically will allow 2 full cycles before running the red. It's legal here to do so after you've given it enough time. Easiest thing to do is call your local non-emergency pd number and talk to them about it. Sometimes the city will even go reset the sensor so it's more sensitive.

we have car pool, bus, and motorcycle lanes for on ramps here. and while waiting in the regular lane one day in my car, i saw a couple motorcyclists just run thru with a rolling stop. so i figured - why not.

We have carpool lanes in our metering lights and it never trips for me, although the main lane which everyone crowds on does trip.

Sorry... I just checked wiki for a explanation of a metering light. We don't have anything like that around here that I know of. Not sure what to tell you. If it don't change for you then I don't see how you have any option but to run it.

Everything I've heard about the metering lights is that they are practically optional. They don't run cameras on them, they don't target them for enforcement, and there is no intersection to worry about. They are just meant to help meter traffic. Running them on the red when there is room to merge is likely going to cause no harm whatsoever, but try not to do that when you are unlucky enough to be sitting there in view of a LEO.

Don't feel bad. 4 years on various forums and I've only seen this question maybe 2 - 3 times. In SoCal we have carpool lanes os it's a non-issue. I would say if the light doesn't change for you then treat it like a stop sign. There's one signal near my house that does that, and if no cars are coming to help I just go.

I generally just run them, dont even slow down, its a waist of time and I dont have to get up to 70mph from a stand still

Meters here are generally turned on only during rush hours so I thought they were on a fixed timer?
Take HOV lane if available and california roll through it. |

I'll usually give it one light cycle before I either ease out and treat it like a stop sign. If it's a particularly busy intersection and for some reason no one's behind me, I'll either go straight and make the nearest u-turn or make a right into a side street and come back out. But of course this is for the light trigger circuit things, because I have NO idea what an expressway onramp metering light is. :>

I've gone through them when there was a long line of cars Andorra just split down the middle, and I saw a cop. I don't think he cared because I just kept on going and he didn't fallow

I run one of them every day on my way to work. In the truck I'll stop for them but on the bike I don't even slow down. Usually blast through them at 70-80MPH unless there's a cop. Then I'll stop and let the vehicle in the other lane go twice to show that I am giving it a chance. That way if he pulls me over I can say I waited to see if it would change but since it didn't I just went.

There have been a couple times where I was the only vehicle that came to a stop and the light took forever to change. I felt like a sitting duck there waiting to be rear-ended. I just roll through them now.
Edit: this is about metering lights on freeway on-ramps. I don't roll or run regular intersections. |

This thread started about those traffic metering lights. For actual traffic lights at intersections, there can be consequences for running them if there are still any red-light cameras up and running, or if there is a LEO watching the intersection. Be much more careful there before deciding to go through a red.

I've only encountered this once and I ran the red light. But I just finished looking it up and its illegal in Texas although they must register red lights.
I suppose I should ask the city to fix it so it will recognize motorcycles. |
