Pregnant and riding?
What do you guys think of women that are pregnant and riding? They dont' necessarily have to be big, but even when they know they are pregnant, do you think they should continue to ride? What are your thoughts?
Ladies: would you ride once you find out you're pregnant? Gentlemen: would you be ok with your wife, girlfriend, mistress...(whatever) to ride if she found out she was preggers with your baby?

We all take risk while riding/driving, knowing the fact that you are taking risk for not only yourself, but also another.. ride accordingly.
I don't see why a capable female rider shouldnt ride while pregnant if she decides to; just as she would have the choice to stay pregnant or not, choice is hers no one else's. |

From a purely practical standpoint, none of the gear fits after month 3 anyway.
Annie had no interest in riding the moment she found out she was pregnant, so it wasn't much of an issue. The only time she has been on the bike while knowingly pregnant, either one-up or two-up, is zipping in to Laguna Seca during MotoGP from the hotel nearby.

i ask because some people see it as being selfish to ride knowing that you are pregnant. its one thing to have a passion for something that is dangerous when you are only responsible for yourself, but when you know that you are now responsible for another living person, isn't it selfish to continue to ride knowing the dangers behind it?

I'm in the camp that it shouldn't be done, but that the choice should be the parents' choice to make. There are all manner of things that are against general recommendations during pregnancy, particularly in late stages, that involve potential blows to the stomach and significant risks to hard hits there. My wife, for example, gave up horseback riding on doctor's advice due to risk of injury to the baby in case of an otherwise minor fall. Just seems like common sense to reduce risk to the baby by giving up actitivities where an otherwise fairly simple injury could threaten health.
A study of injuries to pregnant motorcyclists concluded that the most significant risks occurred due to riding in the third trimester (40.4% increase in risk) and recommended against riding then. It didn't make recommendations in the first two trimesters, but noted increased risks of a ruptured uterus and recommended any pregnant rider involved in any accident immediately report to an obstetric emergency unit for evaluation, irrespective of apparent lack of injury. On a related topic, and perhaps telling of my conservatism on this issue, my wife and I won't ride two up to this day. She's not pregnant (God, I hope not), but because of our young kids, we don't want to risk both of us hospitalized or worse in the case of accident with no one to care for them. When you start bringing your kids into the equation, time to be more risk averse. But it is all about your own personal risk tolerance. I still ride, and I think I do so safely. You wouldn't want to go to the extreme mentioned below of banning any risk. Also . . . in before this is moved out of off topic! Good discussion of important motorcycling issue.

I thought I heard that from somewhere that pregnant women shouldnt ride bicycles because it puts pressure on the cervix or something. I should look this stuff up before sounding like an idiot. haha oh wells.
Still, based on risk accessment... I would prefer if pregnant women did not ride motorcycles. I mean even if you didnt get into an accident, what if you were doing maintenance and it fell on you. Bad things all around. |

I think during the first trimester it would be ok. After that, I feel like the stomach may become a bit of a hassle and the cramping, mood swings and all that other great stuff would increase your risk whether you be in a car or on a bike. We all know its more dangerous to ride a motorcycle than drive a car in most cases and I don't think it would be a good idea to put your baby at such great risk.

I'm pretty sure he was pointing out the fact that you said "won't" rather than "wouldn't" because saying the gear won't be hard to find implies that you are actually going to be looking for it because you're pregnant. He wasn't pointing it out because it sounds "ghetto".

I can't speak for anyone else but if my girl was pregnant and riding, I'd make a big deal out of it. I love to ride and I'd hate to be the person who tells someone else they have to give up riding for possibly an entire year, but at some point-- preferably once you realize you're pregnant-- you have to start thinking about the child's well-being instead of your enjoyment.
FWIW, my SO doesn't ride. She considered it but gave up the idea pretty quickly.

I've never been pregnant so I don't know how my ideas would change if I became pregnant. Things often turn out different in practice than what I simulate in my mind.
At present I think I probably wouldn't ride once I found out I was pregnant. Morally though I feel that it's completely down to the individual woman whether she does ride or not up until the point where the baby is able to survive outside of her womb. Before that point, the baby would almost be like a part of my own body and thus it's completely my own. After that point the baby could be considered a separate entity. Like abortion, this topic is very complex and I'll probably change my mind many times as new information and ideas come to light. I don't think it's black and white. Quote:

Ooh, I have an opinion.
I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant. I stopped riding from about week 5 until about week 10 because I was very dizzy/lightheaded/queasy and there was no way I could ride the bike. I could barely drive to work every day. I rode consistently from week 10 until present. I'm probably done now as we're going out of town for two weeks and my gear is already starting to be tight; by the time we're back home, I doubt I'd fit anymore. I did a lot of research into motorcycling while pregnant and came to the conclusion that it's a personal decision for each individual family. My Ob-Gyn did tell me that there was no inherent danger to the fetus due to the vibrations/actual physical act of riding the motorcycle, so that was a big factor for me. Obviously there was always the risk of hurting the fetus in case of an accident, etc, and if I was a brand new rider, I might feel differently, but this was the choice I made.
