I had almost the same situation happen earlier. Traffic was goin about 30, i goin slightly less then that when the guy in front of me decided to hard brake (for no goddamn reason,) Gradually i applied both brakes with more pressure on the front ofc, Stopped with a good foot to spare. Dude didnt move forward at all, traffic on my right stopped aswell. I moved my bike to the right of the vehicle to ask wtf his problem was. Girl said she panicked, i asked over what and she said cos she noticed a dog on the opposite side of the road (2lanes + the sidewalk)...i was like LOLWUT FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

i had this happen on Saturday. It was my fault, I was looking over at a friend and trying to say something real quick and then when I looked forward traffic had stopped completely. I also only had one hand on the bars. I STILL managed to do an e-stop, nearly lifting the back end up.

Highly recommend taking time every week to practice emergency stops, it helps so much. I've been practicing doing e-stops after a sharp turn as well, that helps a ton in the confidence/muscle memory departments.
Don't lay your bike down. Bro.

edit: Oh yeah, and in my e-stop I didn't use rear brake at all. Just as a note.

Exactly what I was thinking. If they're changing lanes to the right, shift to the left-most lane position. I've made stops quicker than that without even locking it up.

Could have saved it by going left but looked like in the video you had no choice but to dump it. Practice setting your speed/gear and looking for exit strategy. Always look at traffic at least 5 cars ahead of your direction of travel.

Sorry, man. I don't usually chime in on posts like this, but both of the above points were spot on. That was savable and you did not have to lay it down. My observations? Your first mistake was accelerating in congested traffic. Second was not getting on the brake as soon as you saw the brake lights of both vehicles in front of you. Third, you had time to slow down a LOT if you had started sooner, and you could have probably even veered into that wide open space to the left!
So yeah, looking farther ahead and quicker reaction times could have saved your ass on this one. Glad you weren't seriously hurt though!

Does anyone have a problem where if they're making a sharp turn, the front of their foot hits the ground? It's happened a few times to me and it freaked me out a bit.

Well one if you **** up your shift and apply too much or not enough power to the rear wheel then you will lowside.

Either shift to second before initiating the turn or pin it to 13k all the way through the turn.

Or crash, w/e floats your boat

Same thing in mine. Shifting from first to second early in the turn then applying emergency braking about halfway through the turn.

You were probably not at as high a lean angle in the MSF. If your angle is high enough to drag toe, adding throttle or shifting may not be the best idea. Saving it for the drive out of the turn, when more traction is available, could be safer as well as faster throughout the turn. Are you also apexing early?

The video shows that the driver was signaling a right lane change. Was the rider looking to cut off the driver from making the lane change to the right? That is how I see it anyway. If a claim is being filed I hope the insurance company never sees this footage.

If you think the plastic of your bike and your skin scraping across the ground is going to slow you down faster than rubber on asphalt then maybe you should start driving one of those Flinstones cars. If you think giving up all control over the situation is the best answer then, then, then I don't even know what to say because of how stupid that statement is.
Hey mister know it all! Since you were there at my incident I'm sure you know all about it. Oh that's right you weren't. I do possess the skills needed to ride a bike. And no skin scraped thanks to the fact that I wear gear. Since the roads were wet I wasn't going to stop like u speak of, when the asshole ran the red light. but as for that night laying my bike down and sliding away from it, saved my life! Nothing you say will ever change that. Had I chosen to stay upright I would have been T-Boned in the middle of the intersection and would have certainly lost a leg at the very least, which would have caused me to lose my job/career! Or I would have hit the side of his car and flown into/over it. Who knows. But I could have died. Where as choosing to lay it down and slide away from it, I stood up and walked away from it. So that being said, don't ever tell me that laying a bike down is not an option. It saved my life!

Unless you're some kind of demi-god and can manipulate the laws of physics...

Just admit it, you braked improperly and laid it down, we won't judge you (unless you fervently insist that you slid away from the direction you were already traveling in).

Pop quiz, which do you think is greater? The static coefficient of friction on rubber tires and the street or the dynamic coefficient of friction on leather and the street.

I mean, if skidding leather stopped faster than non skidding rubber, don't you think the world might explode because thats impossible?

Admit your mistake and learn from it so you don't foolishly jump off your bike the next time it happens

long story short; i was looking in blind spot, cagers slowed down, looked back forward, had to lay er down

I did the same thing, but with even less space/time to react, greater speed, and I guarantee on worse tires and brake pads. You panicked and crashed. When I did the same thing I was on both brakes and engine braking like a mad man. I came close to rear ending the guy, but I've still yet to crash my bike on the street.

I really think it should be a requirement that all street bike riders grow up on MX bikes first. I've saved myself from countless situations that would have riders who aren't used to the bike getting out of control doing the same thing you did, or worse.
