Mad lady at traffic light
For the first time in my 10 months of riding I finally get a sport biker to say high with his throttle. Nothing special there but it cheered me up a little bit.
So just now I was at a red light and lane split while all traffic was stopped. I got in front of a middle aged lady in a black SUV and stopped. She loses it and whips around me past the white line while the light is still red. I shake my head a little bit a little disappointed. I get a little ticked and I know she's pissed so I give her a couple beeps and wave my fingers at her while she looks at me through her side view mirror. She yells something to herself and the light changes green. She doesn't budge so I make things akward for her by playing some music for her with my horn and she jets it down the road. I make sure to drive by her and blow her a kiss and this ticks her off enough to start chasing me down the road 60+ mph! I get to my turn and make it real quick getting in between incoming traffic so she can't get my plates. She makes the turn too but loses me in a shopping center...... Yeah I lane split. Wah Wah. Big deal. Crazies like these should not have drivers licenses. She could have easily rear ended me when I was coming to a stop at the turn or swiped me at the initial stop. My question is is there anything I should do to clear my name or even report her? Or should I just drop it and chalk it up to the consequences of riding a bike? I am gonna continue to lane split. I am not a reckless driver I just know I am not getting in anyone's way or slowing traffic down so I'll take the hit if I get caught. |

Sounds like you were both being childish. Something bikers can't afford to do.

Lane splitting is illegal in Florida.
Waving fingers at female drivers is sexual harrassment. Screwing with a woman in a SUV is suicidal.

Out of the three statements all you got out of it was sexual harassment? Shouldn't you have zoned in on the part that says "lane splitting is illegal in florida?" You can't report something someone did because you were breaking the law to begin with. Well, you CAN report it but I'm sure the law won't be on your side.

OP, You did something illegal. It made another person mad and they did something reckless. They did something illegal by pulling around you. This "ticked you off." So now, you are in the situation that lady was in. So you ride by her and aggravate her more by blowing her a kiss and what not. Seriously. At what point did you stop to consider that acting this way could have some serious consequences? You're not any more of a victim than she is IMO. Get your head on straight. If you are going to lane split, accept the fact that some people will get pissed off. You will either need to learn how to control yourself or make sure you have some good life insurance.

i will say this. as motorcyclists we sometimes break the law. whatever, those policies were made by car drivers who scarcely understand what goes into riding a motorcycle. i don't really care. by taking such a stance, -- a similar stance you took in your story -- one needs to realize what they are doing and be committed to what they are doing. if you are making a turn, commit to the turn. if you are making a pass, commit to the pass. if you are splitting, commit your full intent and attention to it. don't second guess yourself. you shouldn't have reacted to someone doing something stupid except in whatever method gets you the **** away from that idiot the fastest. they drove their car around you to block? take 3 steps back, go behind them, make a right turn. they followed you? find the biggest line of traffic that you can split to get away from them. on a straight with noone else around you except some road rager? if you don't want to GTFO, slow down then park or turn into a gas station.
playing fox vs hare with an SUV is a sure-fire way to die.

Sounds like both of you made some bad judgements. Even if you decide to break the law and lane split, if someone gets mad and pulls up around you like that, let them and get over it. You've got nothing to prove out on the road.

She overreacted, but lane splitting is illegal in Florida. That being said, I do it too sometimes.

Arguing or pissing off drivers not only gives an even worse image of motorcycles, its incredibly childish and dumb. Dangerous even.
If you ride a motorcycle you should know how to control yourself, that goes for when drivers piss you off as well!

I would've just stared at her, then rode off. There's no point in making a fool out of yourself as well. Even if she got your plates the police won't do anything unless she has proof. Like a video or if she's a cop herself.

I suppose if you're illegally lane-splitting you can't really complain if someone gets upset. You were both dumb, but you started it.

Meh I wouldn't get caught into the trap of thinking there's an image to maintain. Everyone in the world is different and by saying there's an image you're kind of just labeling yourself like everyone that doesn't ride motorcycles right? Why would that be ok to do to yourself if you wouldn't want others doing it?

Never taunt somebody driving something bigger than you while on a bike it's just going to end badly.

OP all ur sposed to do when they get mad is look at them, for a good 10seconds, then lift up your visor, then give em a thumbs up and continue to bobble your head while putting down your visor
it works every time. EVERY TIME! as for lane splitting being illegal where the op is at is irrelevant. If it WAS LEGAL in florida and he did it, he'd still have pissed off people around him. I dont understand why ppl are talking to the op as if lanesplitting was legal, he would magically avoid scenarios like this |

I expected the first time I lane split to have a bunch of people opening doors to block me, swerving over to block me out, etc. I've had a few people move to block me, or maybe they just were moving over in the lane without knowing I was there, never had anyone really swerve right at me, never had a door opened at me, but what I have had, which I never expected, is people moving out of my way, intentionally. Traffic gets bad, I start splitting, and I get somewhere where I'm blocked out by a semi and another vehicle, all of a sudden the other vehicle goes almost into the median and then moves back into the normal lane position when I've passed them. You don't see this behavior in other states so much, and I think that's because it is legal here, so it is accepted. Other states need to legalize it, then it will have to be done by some braver riders to help get it normalized. |

You could report, but the only proof to act on is your admission of guilt. Entertaining story though.

We're not allowed to ride our MTBs on the singletracks out here so we call it poaching when we do it. We try to do it when no one is our there and most of the trail maintenance is done by us unofficially because we like out trail smooth. People are to caught up on what's written as a law instead using common sense and simply trying to get along.
Something is considered ok in one place but in another because if a law and if you break that law your a bad person in the eyes of that public. This paradox is called society and we all have to deal with the good and bad aspects of it. Just ride safe however you want to and be prepared for others not to share you same opinion and realize that's just how it is and move on. |
