I saw this Kickstarter a while back. I like the idea, but I think the implementation is lacking. Nobody is going to know what those flashing lights are supposed to mean, especially if they're "randomly flashing" while your brakelight is staying off. I think it would be great if this became an industry standard, but I don't think it'll be as helpful as they imagine when only a handful of people are using/seeing them.
Also, cars can slow down without brakelights due to engine braking and downshifting, just like a bike. While it's more pronounced on a bike with less mass and momentum, I can definitely cause my 5-speed Cobalt to slow quite drastically without ever touching the brake pedal. As the rider in control of the bike, if you're doing something to cause the bike to slow rapidly without the brakes, maybe you should tap the lever/pedal so that your brakelight does come on and signal your intentions to those behind you. |
