I often use a hemostat on those clips. Then, before reassembly, I spray and wipe the tube down with a silicone spray. This not only protects the tube and keeps it in good condition, but it makes it easier to slide the clip over, and next time you MAY be able to move it by hand.

I found using a small vice grip to grip the tabs can widen it up enough to push it back over the bump on the petcock when the hose is already on.

Thanks guys! I found out that if you slide the clip to where you want it before you attach the hose it's still easy to attach and then I don't even have to worry about moving it.

On the underside of my gas tank, there's a round piece that has wires coming out of it. That same piece also has a little spout that looks like a black hose could be fixed on to it. Is there a piece of hose that's supposed to be hooked up to that spout? I do have a really long hose that runs down the center spine of my bike that currently leads nowhere. What does that hose do, and what does that spout on the circular piece do? Am I supposed to have those two parts attached?

Yes - that hose is the catheter, intended for long trips.

Totally normal, all our bikes are just like that.

No, not at all. I really don't recall why it's there, but it's all good. The hose you referenced is just a vent hose for your carb... so don't try to stick it up your urethra. No amount of Surgilube (KY) will make that a good idea.

Haha, you're killing me man!

Alright thanks. I just finished my first jet kit installation today and it took me 10 hours just to take everything off and put everything back in. I had to deal with a bunch of problems so all in all I was pretty proud when I roared down the road with my Area P exhaust, not having to fear that my bike would overheat. I'm still have issues with the jetting, but that's another story.

Thanks for the info, I'm glad I didn't miss anything during the rebuild process.

You'll have to take it apart several more times before you get it tuned just right, but don't worry, now that you know how it all goes together, you'll get to the point where you can have it apart in 10 minutes (15 on the outside).

Sorry to bring up an old thread (extremely informative by the way). I removed the tank. However, even with the petcock in the "on" position, I still get a steady drip of fuel. With it in the "Pri" position, it's a steady stream.

Any easy way to resolve this issue?

The reason I decided to take the tank off the bike was to investigate the gasoline smell in the motor oil (put my nose to the motor oil fill opening). My air filter also smells like gasoline as well (it's pretty moist as well....should it be?).

Thanks!

Thanks!

I resolved the issue with a suggestion from the forum. I took apart the petcock and cleaned it (wiped with a towel to remove any dirt) and I stretched the spring a little before putting everything back together.

That seemed to do the trick. 24hrs already and no more leak!
