How successful is applying touch up paint?
I am looking to sell my bike soon to get something a little bigger. I have a few scratches here and there, and I thought about touching them up before selling it. Is it worth my time, or should I just sell it as is?

Don't sell your bike. You don't need anything bigger. The baby Ninja is fastest in the corners than any other bike. You will regret the nimbleness of this little rocket. Girls will be too afraid to ride with you on a bigger bike also.

While you raise some good points, I want something bigger so the girl (aka my wife) and I can go on a two up trip of the west cost. Baby Ninja doesn't like 75mph with the people on her.

2 things ill never understand
1) wanting to ride with some one pillion? No thanks, I like my bike to myself. 2) someone wanting to ride pillion? Can't be that exciting or comfortable, right? Leave the wife at home, get away, isn't that why guys ride bikes in the first place? oh oh, almost forgot, touch up paint will still look like crap up close but from far away will hide some of the scratches, dings ect...

I think it depends on the scratches. Touchup paint works well for me for things like rock chips. It's still often noticeable, but less noticeable than the chips were prior. For longer scratches, I think that it is less likely to work out well.

In you personal opinion, is it better to leave it as is, for full transparency, or to touch it up and risk it not looking too good?

Clean, wax, and buff; but otherwise leave as is IMO. You will not be able to hide the scratches with touchup paint from any buyer who is looking at the bike even moderately carefully, and if they get the sense you're trying to hide the fact the bike has been down, they might walk on principle alone.

only time I use touch up paint is if I have a scratch, or big chip out and it is showing lots of bare metal. Clean, remove moisture and then put on touch up paint to help prevent rusting.
other than that let it be, no point in touchin up plastic, if it is that bad replace it, or do a complete sand, prime and paint.

This kit works surprisingly well. Get some OEM touch up and this kit.

Chances are it will look worse and be more noticeable if you touch it up. Depending on the size/depth/placement of the scratch, and color of the paint, it can be extremely difficult to do a decent job.
If you still can't decide, post a photo. |
