Yeah, he showed these at CES. The three-wheel concept never seems to last, from the old BMW and Mezerschmidt models forward. There was a Bellevue,WA startup a few years ago that disappeared. I wish them the best, but I'm not pre-ordering one.
I'm also following Lit Motors and Arcimoto, the latter of which may already be dead; theIR website has not been updated for over a year. The 4 wheel cage is just an inefficient design, but it's really hard to bring anything new to the established auto market. |

If it is registered as a motorcycle it may not require a crash test. But required or not, they still could do such a test.
I just don't see how they can keep to that price point. If these sell well, I expect the price to go nuts in a hurry.

their site says it's "engineered to a 5-star crash test safety rating" meaning that it has never, and will never, be tested.
This thing is a rolling death trap. I'd rather be on a motorcycle where I have a chance of being thrown than in this thing that will just confine me until I squish after being hit by a 5k lb SUV. |

I see no reason it wouldn't be able to do decently in at least a head-on impact. There's plenty of space upfront to be the crumple zone.
Side impacts look like a different story. I'd give one a test drive (or ride?) and consider it as something small for around town/fun back roads. Looks like it could stand to be lowered about 1" though. @Kscreations08, that video has a delta configuration with terrible weighting and is just not stable through turns. The OP is a tadpole configuration. Tadpoles are much easier to design so that they're stable with minimal effort. Delta can be done, as shown by alex.s, but that car is brilliant beyond brilliant and the suspension/weight balance is meticulously designed for stability and is an engineering marvel. |

well, actually in the small overlap test, you might just shear off the front wheel and keep going until you hit something else. |

^^ they might have do do the overlap test so the corner obstacle hits the main body of the vehicle. I think just shearing off a wheel would be cheating.

Looks like the Corbin Sparrow, which was a failure:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers_Motors_NmG I suspect this thing will fail for much the same reasons.

Let's be real, the sparrow also looked like something out of a Dr Suess movie and was electric. As the Zero Motorcycle thread has blown up about, EV's have some barriers to break before being successful.
This Elio is gas powered, looks like a cross between a can-am and a ford focus, and could be either a hit or a miss. I think it will all come down to how it performs and handles. If it can get out of it's own way with power, handle like a sporty small car, and still offer 500-ish miles to a small tank off gas, it might be a hit. If I could make it a great handling fun vehicle, I'd be just as happy commuting in it as I would be railing some corners and goofing around town with it. it has potential. Unfortunately, they've not yet posted any info on the engine that I can find. :/ |

I'd totally use this to travel long distance to my Mtb races. Better milage then the 250 with climate control for not much more $. I'll wait till they work out the bugs which there's sure to be plenty of in this day and age of get it out there and let the consumers test it for us.

If the ELIO can actually be made and sold as advertised and the company was profitable and thrived it would be great. I'm skeptical that it will ever actually be produced. They are promising a lot for a very low price and we all know that something too good to be true probably isn't.
I like the idea but they would still face a lot od f challenges selling in large quantities in the US. Unfortunately it looks to me like another attempt to collect lots of investor funds up front and then go bankrupt.

Don't get me wrong -- it's still possible that they will fail or that they are trying to sell investors a big golden bridge; but at this point, they've had to convince some pretty impressive companies to lend their name to the product, so that gives me some hope that this thing will happen. We'll know soon, regardless, as they've announced a proposed hiring date for factory workers as Q4 of this year. If they don't end up hiring anyone, I guess we'll know. |
