Why are the newgen headers so far from the engine?

On most bikes it seems like the headers follow the lines of the engine. Is there a reason that the newgen 250's are so far away? It just seems/looks awkward. I know it was designed to be covered up but I'm wondering if there's an engineering reason.

I'd love to replace my exhaust system with headers that follow the line of the engine and exit in a shorty exhaust underneath.

The larger the bend radius, the less restriction to flow.

That makes sense.

So headers with a sharper angle would degrade performance? It seems then that bending the stock pipes would be a bad idea, but a new system could make up for it somehow.
