High Speed Gas Mileage
What kind of gas mileage are people getting while doing high speed cruising?
I've got a 2012 Ninja, dead stock except for a 15 tooth front sprocket. On flat ground with no wind, I'll get 37 to 40 mpg when running an indicated 75 to 80 mph. Is that normal for a new gen? If I back off and cruise an indicates 65 mpg, I'll get 46 to 49 mpg. If I keep it between 60 and 65 mph, I'll get low 50 mpg. Wondering if maybe the main jet is too rich. Bike runs fine under all conditions. Just not getting the super high gas mileage others report, at least at 75-80 mph cruising. Under the same conditions, my BMW F800 gives 48 to 50 mpg. |

I get around 55-60 MPG with stock gearing with 80% highway and 20% city, with most of my highway riding done betwen 70-75 MPH indicated and almost always in a full tuck.

With a stock bike, in town (25-45mph) I get mid-60s mpg. Once I hit the freeway/interstate it starts dropping. I've averaged 60-70mph and gotten around 50-55mpg. I know going 80mph drops it down to around 45-48 mpg.
After doing two long road trips, with a variety of riding and road surfaces and environmental conditions, I've given up stating a range. My bike gets 200miles give or take before I should start looking to fill up.

How many miles per tank are people getting?
I don't know how much I trust a fuel gauge that doesn't even start showing a reading sometimes for over a minute after the bike is running.
How many miles out of a tank are you getting? Side note (How low can the fuel in the tank get before it's into the danger zone?) |

I think I get about 51 miles per gallon which is not bad. I fill up my tank every 3 days of commuting (180 miles)

I fill up every 200 but have gone as far as 235 on a tank. I'm stock except for 2 washers under the needles.

I make it to about 198 miles each time before I feel afraid and go fill up.
I am yet to break 200. But ive only had it like a month.

Gas mileage
So, I read somewhere that these Ninjettes are good for 70+ MPG. My new to me 2010, got just 44mpg my 1st tank. That being said, I must say I have flogged this little tiddler like a rented mule for my 1st full tank. That tank also included a 4 - 5 mile topspeed run, and several commutes at or near 90mph....do you think that had anything to do with it? I've decided to go a little easy on this 2nd tank, and this morning took the back way to work, not exceeding 55mph and not once did I go WFO, nor did I rev it much past 6k. I guess the jury is still out, but just a note... when I comute on the Ninjette's older big brother, a 2001 Kawasaki ZRX1200R (and I flog it too) I get 42mpg.

Well from I've been told, and seen with my own eyes via friends bikes, If you run them at around 65-75 MPH they average around 68-78 MPG depending on a few factors obviously: wind, maintaining a steady cruising speed, stop and go riding, etc. I've heard of people getting upwards of 80+ MPG, but I'm not sure about that.

I think the problem is trying to stay ahead of traffic on my daily comute. Most people around here seem to go 80+ mph, and since I have always ridden pretty fast bikes....no problem staying ahead of the cager's. So I've had a long habit of filtering through traffic, so I don't have to "ride in formation" with all the people eating, putting on makeup, talking/texting, or just plain not paying attention. When I try to ride the Ninjette in the same manor......well, you really just can't, because it won't accelerate, from say, 80, so I end up right there with the cage's. However, there is a back way to work, and from now on, that's the route I will go. I rotate my bikes everyday, the "big" burners I'll ride the "fast" route, on the tiddler, the back way. I'll report back at my next fill up. I'm looking for 70mpg+

It seems the newgens also just don't get as good gas mileage as the pregens. Between the pregen I had before, my newgen, and my 300, the newgen gets the worst mileage. Pregen had the best.

Go check out Fuelly.
http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/kawasaki/ex250 Seems that the mid-50's (US) is average mpg, with some of the best in the 70's and some of the worst in the 40's. I've seen posts on this site from people that are really into fuel economy and they get AMAZING numbers. Personally, I get around 60-65mpg. It doesn't seem to matter how I ride in terms of hard or gentle, but it makes a big difference dependent on load. If I have tank bag and panniers on, the fuel consumption drops quickly. If I carry a passenger, it drops further still. I don't think that the little engine is intended to haul around a lot of drag. |

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13536 http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...hlight=mileage It all depends on how you ride and how you fill up. I commute mostly 80-90mph indicated and get around 50mpg. edit: bike has 15/44 sprockets FWIW |

Geez, at a steady 80mph, my VFR get's 52mpg, and the ZRX about 44mpg, not to mention my old Guzzi, at a steady 65mph (it's "happy spot") I've got 55 mpg, pretty impressive from a 43 year old pushrod twin.

My average mpg between the different Ninjettes:
Pregen - 59mpg w/ a best of 67mpg Newgen - 46mpg w/ a best of 58mpg 300 - 57mpg w/ a best of 62mpg It could just be the particular newgen I have isn't that great but there's a huge difference in mileage and I rode the same way on every bike. |

If I'm getting 200mi/tank and a fill-up is 3.5gal, that's 57.5mpg. I don't understand your post. |

Ah , fuel economy, one of my favorite topics!
On the Greenaero streamliner my last 3 tankfill average is over 109 mpg. I just got a new best tankfill of 146.6 mpg on a recent testing run. On my 2005 Ninjette the last 3 tankfill average is 83 mpg. I've started to modify it from stock and so far have raised the gearing ( from 14/45 to 15/41), changed the windscreen and fully faired in the front wheel. With these mods I should be able to break past the 100mpg range on a testing run. I should be able to raise my average to around 90 mpg in regular use. I'm happy to answer questions about what you can do to improve your fuel economy. Getting better fuel economy is a lot like losing weight; its not complicated but it takes some work and discipline. I wrote an article that you can check out here http://twofiftymag.com/2012/11/max-m...rmiling-guide/ YMMV |

Filled up today 47mpg. This gas tank was used for my rejeting. Did alot of crazy throttle testing, idling, top speed runs to triple digits, lots of WOT, mid throttle, lots of blipping. Anything imaginable was done, so ill see how the next fill up will be. I Have to go back to normal commuting to work, with the occasional WOT runs.. Not really necessary but it's so much fun now..
I have achieved 255mi one time when it was stock, but it had less than a gallon in the tank. Was averaging 52-55 with Full areaP, 2 washers, snorkel removed, and a 15T fs. I usually run it till it hits the red sometimes sooner. I ride out of my way (24mi round trip) just to fill up with 93 Ethanol free, I like to believe it does something special for her. God forbid I have to put in .3~.4 gallons of regular gas just to make it to the ethanol free gas. I Read some stuff online about ethanol free gas and I figured I'd give it a try, been using it for a few months now.

That's a noticeable difference just from plugs. I switched over to the NGK iridium ones 5,XXXmi ago.. Ill probably use them a little bit longer, I pulled them out and inspected and re-gapped not to long ago.

disappointing MPG
Well, yesterday was a semi nice day, so after the Chiefs game I took all 3 of my scoots to the gas station for a fill up and the proper amount of stabil. Winters coming and around here your never really sure when it will become too nasty to ride. I like to be prepared...... anyway, I took the opportunity to calculate all 3 bikes MPG. On the Ninjette's last tank I made sure I did no freeway riding and was very careful to not go WFO everywhere, and generaly rode it in a careful, gas conserving way. MPG? 51, 1200cc ZRX? 44
800cc VFR? 42. Needless to say I was a little miffed that the Ninjette was only 51 mpg (2010 model). I have seen middle 50's on my ZRX (just tooling around) and on the road (like a distance trip) the VFR has hit low 50's, I was hoping for 65mpg+, but I guess I'll never see it, regardless of how light I am on the throttle, anyone here see a lot higher than 50?? I haven't replaced the plugs yet, but I did do an oil change and cleaned the (filthy) air cleaner, I thought these things really sipped the gas, but I'm guessin' I'm wrong. |

Yours is not normal, Mike.
I have a naked pre-gen that is used mostly on freeway at sustained indicated 80 mph, rolling consistently for 56~58 Floridian flat miles on one gallon of E10 (gasoline + 10% ethanol). A valves' adjustment may help.

I just got a 2012 and have put just over 300 miles on it... I am getting around 40-45 right now... I am hoping that after it breaks in a little, that will increase... Any thoughts?

Im in same boat For some reason my mpg also doesn't get any better then 45 I recently started filling up with regular gas and it hasn't affected mpg at all. I fill up every 100 miles and its always above 2 gallons usually between 2.2- 2.4 gal Never actually had 50mpg. Does it mean I should clean out carbs or something?

I just purchased an 09 250. All stock except for a 2Bro slip on. I don't know what's wrong. This is my 3rd tank and I'm averaging around 26 - 28mpg!!!!
Short rides (around 5 miles per trip) and I normally shift around 6 - 8k rpm and I normally cruise around 4 - 6k rpm around town. This is for another thread, but I'll preface: I had an issue with smelling gasoline in the oil (nose to filler hole). I changed the oil (Rotella T6) & filter when I got the bike. But after just 250 miles later, I smell it again =( I also had a petcock issue where it was leaking gas into the carbs. But I fixed that already. Not sure what the issue is now. I may need to bring it to a mechanic to take a look. Sigh..... Any ideas why the horrible gas mileage? |
