Yeah the range is a non-issue for most. I'm used to filling up at 100 miles on my KLX. It's got a 2 gallon tank. And my SV's fuel light comes on with like 140 ish miles.

This little Yamaha looks like it's going to be the king of the small displacement class. More HP than Honda & Kawi. Less expensive than both! ABS is standard.
I hope their quality control is good with this R3! This will make Kawi sweat a little....and that's a great thing! We need more competition =) I wonder when Suzuki will jump in? |

I don't want mandatory, just mandatorily optional ... I can appreciate not everyone wants it or wants to pay for it. It's easier to remove the abs system, than it is to add, in the worst case.

By the sounds of it, Yamaha is doing it right, the bike sounds very appealing. I would definitely like to ride one sometime but I have no room in the stable for another bike at the moment, or at least no room in my bank account for another bike so for now its the ninja and I till death do us part

My fear is the infiltration of the 300+cc bikes in to the ultra lightweight race classes. The rules are currently allowing 300s but all the manufacturers are pushing the limits of who can make the biggest small bike.
At almost 40hp at the wheel there is no way my little ninja could still remaining within the rules of the class and touch that bike. I hope CCS doesn't change the rules allowing up to 350cc's for liquid cooled four strokes |

While it sucks ... its true. The reality is for a LONG time Kawi was the only name in the game. But with everyone now getting on board (and Kawi themselves at 296cc) the 250s are going to get phased out and be noncompetitive. The only thing that would be a potential would be to let the 250s run SBK trim and the 300+ run SSTK trims. Even then I am not sure ......

I swear I read somewhere that Yamaha is expanding their motocross bLU cRU amateur racing program to road racing. If that's the case, I see Yamaha dominating that race class.

Honda, cbr300. Kawa, ninja 300. Yamaha r3. What 250cc, at least for USA.
Hot 350cc twin might be too much bike for some learners, would need rpm limiter toggle switch. The 42 hp number for the R3, where did that come from? That might be 1-2 hp more at the wheel at the top end, but I don't think it's going to separate from the Ninja. The Ninja has a 9% longer stroke and is probably going to be more torquey under 8K rpms. Ah right, but the R3 has 8% more displacement. |

nah they could push it up to 400cc and it'd still be fine for learners as the power would be linear (and still low) and the only way you'd get the front end off the ground would be by clutch.
I don't think they'll go over 400cc though because then they'd be in 500cc territory, Feels like it's going to stay around where it is, no more "cheater bike" mentality in the small displacement class just better suspension and brakes because those are the real "go fast" parts

The Yamaha R3 specs are right near the power/weight limit for the EU in that age category. That's why all this bikes have about the same power and weight. The RC390 is right on the limit. |
