what kind of gas do you pump?
When I first got the bike, used regular unleaded gasoline. After that been using premium gasoline. Top of the line chevron.
Which do you recommend or use? Thnx for reading! |

Very debated topic. There was a video floating around that explained octane's and showed why you should use the manufacturer recommended which for the 250's is 87 or 91 ron
As long as your engine is not pinging, you should be fine :O |

Just checked and ive been pumping the correct gasoline. It's premium 91.
Getting better mileage and performance out of higher octane gasoline. The first time I pumped it, my buddy said I had a little backfire come out of the exhaust. That I shouldn't be worries due to the gasoline I pumped that caused it. Runs just fine, 4 months strong ridden daily. |

Nothing to worry about. The only thing running 91 will hurt is your wallet, there's just no benefit to it on these bikes.

Higher octanes are for higher compression engines (not necessarily however). Some cars use 110, but that's race fuel. A common misconception is that the fuel is cleaner, however, there isn't a big difference in that. By using a higher octane, your wasting a small amount of money each time you fill up, since that gas won't be used. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating. I think I wrote that correctly.

Fuel Octane Rating
i think this is tech talk but if its not i apologize and should be moved where it should...
ok so i was wondering what octane fuel you guys use in your bike and why? well why other than prices i use the 91 or whatever it is the most expensive one but i read somewhere...ill try to find again here in a bit...that on bikes its better to use lower octane fuel than higher octane fuel so i thought i would ask you guys...also if its better to use the lower is it bad to use the higher and vice versa? i know its probably not too much difference but again...just thought id ask... |

87, non-ethanol. I believe the owner's manual recommends 87.

Yup, if you're lucky to get ethanol free gas where you live. Everything is E10 around here except for Shell V-Power at selected stations. Even then, I question whether it is truly 100% ethanol free. I believe the manual states that gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol is "approved" for use.

I use regular..87. that is what the bike is rated for..!!! the supersports all need 90+ octane, but not our little ninjette. pumping anything more than that is just a waste of cash, just like in most vehicles rated for 87 (i have a friend who runs his corolla on premium..i think he's a nut lol). my fuel also has ethanol, but the dealership guy said as long as I empty the tank every week or so, it won't really cause any problems... only if you leave the ethanol gas in the tank for an extended period will it cause problems. so far, so good!

Do they have these ongoing discussions in car forums?
How about forums for bikes that require premium?

Anti-detonation additives tend to create more deposits in the carbs and engine. Regular gas is good enough for these engines, which can't benefit from the characteristics that the premium gas offers. http://www.cartalk.com/content/premium-vs-regular-0

There is no benefit to running "premium" gas in an engine designed for "regular".
the designations that stations give gasoline is very misleading. They should simply stick to calling them by their octane number, because in no way is "premium" gas better than "regular" gas. It's simply different. The higher the octane rating, the more heat/pressure is required to detonate that gasoline. This is especially important in cars/motorcycles with very high compression ratios, or cars with forced induction. By design, those vehicles have excess pressure that can cause the gasoline to prematurely detonate. Premature detonation induces "ping" and is not good for an engine, and reduces performance. Generally speaking, for street riding, you should use the LOWEST octane rating that your engine was designed for, for the best performance. track days, aftermarket tunes, etc. all bring in other factors that may change your desired octane, but on our bikes 87 will give you optimum performance. If you're concerned with keeping the engine cleaner, use "top tier gasoline". You can google that term, and find a list of gasoline stores that are considered "top tier". I choose to only buy gas from these stations unless I'm in an emergency, when I only put in as much gas as I need to get me to a top tier station. They include additives that help clean out your fuel system. |

higher the octane means the fuel takes longer to burn.
so blah blah blah, the fuel will be less prone to pinging. use the higher octane fuel in summer when the temperature gets hot |

Kawasaki recommends 87. Just use 87 unless you get knocking, then use a tank of midrange. No reason to blow extra money out your exhaust pipe.

Once again,
Thanks ninjette.org... I don't know why, but I was using 91 for mine... Maybe because it's a motocycle with a porty look, so it needed to be fed with some expensive gas... So I'll try 87 on my next fill up... Never thought that Ninjette could be less expensive to run... |

I run on 91 octane simply because Costco here offers either 85 Octane or 91 Octane. no 87 octane unless I want to pay 15 cents more a gallon down the road
