Tire break in is just don't go aggressive right on the bat, you can break them in pretty quickly with progressive leans but you can't just jump flick from straight up to knee down without scrubbing them a bit afaik. I know that people take new tires onto the track all the time.

I go easy on my tires anyway since it takes me awhile to get to any twisties. Today was a slow ride up the mountain after 10 miles of freeway and then going on progressively tighter and narrower roads.

to answer your question there was a post in another thread somewhere saying that the new tires are bt-45s which are likely the best touring option for the 250. This is switched from pirelli diablo rosso IIs which are awful for touring but amazing for twisties
also dammmmnnnnn ~36,700 miles hopefully my 300 sees that kind of mileage someday. |

I don't know if I'll ever see a track day :[ Too scared for now hahah.
Street riding is my thing though and those are just bad-ass. Would you say it would perform bad because it's a big tire or because it's not meant for the 250r? 600's usually come stock with 180s if I'm not wrong, though yeah, they're built for the bike. I probably answered my own question. |

I believe it would perform worse because the bike isn't designed for it. I'm pretty sure that the smaller profile tires are what give you the "flickability" feeling that you can just swing the bike from side to side effortlessly. |

Lubed chain and checked tire pressures, first outing on the Diablo Rosso II's tomorrow.
Found out that my lo-beam headlight stopped working, swapped bulbs for the time being while I wait for a new pair to come in. |

All I see with bigger tires is higher cost. No thanks. Replaced tires today. DRII on the rear of the 300. IRC on the rear of the 250. Will have a Metzeler Sportec M3 on the front of the 250 as well; person doing my tires couldn't get it on even with a machine so I'll have to finish the job later.
The DRII on the rear feels so much better although that is also a result of not having a super square tire haha. Oh I did the chain and sprockets on the 300 a few days ago too. |

Replaced the wiring harness and rear turn signals as well as tossed the snorkel.
While doing so, I realized the airbox is a source of pain. It has got to go. Also, the 180 tire on the 250 looks like its doing nothing but weighing the poor bike down. |

@NevadaWolf, how many miles did you get out your Pirellis?
Hmm.. I got gasoline in my oil. I was noticing poor mileage this past Saturday but I figured it was do to having the throttle pinned to keep up with the big bikes and the wind. Time to pull the plugs and carbs and check the air filter.

More break-in riding, the odometer is now at 500 km (310 miles) .
Also calculated average fuel consumption: 23.6 km/liter (55.5 mpg). |

Whoo hoo! Those first couple hundred miles are so much fun even with the break in restrictions. Course on my break in, I was also learning so was quite happy to have the restrictions.

Put her on the stand since she tried to kill me, sudden failure in the steering stem. Not sure what happened but will go through it this week hopefully. Going to put springs in the forks for the commuter and service them while I am at it. Bike has not hit 10K yet and steering felt fine up until it happened, weird. I put tapered bearings in the race bike but will probably reuse the stockers from the racebike build to save some cash on the commuter if the races look ok.
Went and got my 6R out of storage at FIL barn from the move and rode it from Dallas to Austin. She will be on commuting duties until the Ninjette is back in action. FYI the 6R sucks as a commuter and my neck, wrists, back, and butt are still pissed from the ride down from DFW.

Spent Easter Sunday decapitating two engines!!!
Finally got around to pulling the head off the bike. Not very hard actually. One intake valve was soaked in oil so I figured the valve stem seal was bad, where I was hoping not to have to futz around with the valves at all . Not a huge deal, I'll just have to spend a day in Dad's shop an hour from nowhere where I can check the guides, replace the seals, and grind the valve seats. Then I thought crap, I still have the spare engine that I haven't touched, and it's head could use a good checking out anyway (this engine was reported to have a rod knock by PO but I can't verify anything yet), why don't I just do both heads at once? So I pulled the head off the other engine. Next free Saturday will be spent figuring out how to do a valve job... fun stuff! Here's my helper with the head off the good engine.
